Chapter 2177: Dumbfounded
Although it was termed as an escort, it functioned more as surveillance.
Throughout the journey, they were strictly prohibited from acting independently.
Upon reaching the provincial capital, they found only two scribes and a small retinue of 20 to 30 individuals awaiting them outside the city. Shao Yunduan and Jia Heming were notably absent, as were Sun Bai, Sun Qian, Hang Xingshan, Zheng Sangge, and other prominent figures.
Lord Yang’s expression darkened.
With a smile, Scribe Zhang explained, “Regrettably, our Lord has been unwell and preoccupied of late, convalescing at the manor outside the city. The others are engrossed in their duties and unable to break away. Hence, I’ve been assigned to assist Madam Shao in welcoming you.”
“As it’s already late, Lord, I suggest you retire to the inn and settle in. Madam Shao will extend an invitation for a meeting tomorrow morning.”
Lord Yang and Prefect Liu were dumbfounded!
And they weren’t alone; everyone else shared their disbelief!
Their bewildered gazes met. Madam Shao? Did they hear correctly? It couldn’t be, right?
“What… What does this mean?” Lord Yang struggled to comprehend. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he had misunderstood. Surely, it wasn’t as it seemed.
Observing their reactions, Scribe Zhang suppressed a smirk. An imperial envoy? With such meager resolve, he dared to claim such a title! Was he not afraid of becoming a laughingstock?
“Lord Shao has been plagued by excessive worry and fatigue, leading to illness. He’s currently recuperating at the farm outside the city. Madam Shao has been tasked with receiving the two Lords! Rest assured, Lord Shao has sanctioned this arrangement. If you have any grievances, you may address them to Madam Shao!”
Lord Yang and Magistrate Liu exchanged infuriated glances.
Similar? How could this be considered similar?
After all, Lord Shao was a court official. He didn’t handle matters of amnesty himself; instead, he delegated them to Madam Shao. It was evident he harbored no intentions of submitting to the Emperor.
Of course, they didn’t take the two imperial envoys seriously.
Lord Yang was itching to depart with scathing remarks!
If that was their stance, he could simply leave. He wanted to see if Shao Yunduan would frantically implore them to stay.
But he couldn’t risk it.
What if Shao Yunduan made no attempt to detain them? How would he explain himself to the Emperor?
Initially, he had assumed the task would be straightforward, but he had made a commitment to the Emperor!
He wished he could pummel himself senseless at that moment…
Lord Yang reined in his anger and retorted, “This is hardly appropriate, is it? We’re imperial envoys dispatched by the Emperor. The Emperor has issued a decree for Lord Shao to accept. How can we delegate such a crucial matter to a woman? Since Lord Shao is recuperating outside the city, I request that you arrange for us to visit the manor tomorrow, Scribe Zhang!”
As he spoke, Lord Yang seethed with indignation. Was there any imperial envoy subjected to greater indignity than himself? Certainly not!
For the Emperor’s sake, he bore the humiliation!
To his surprise, Scribe Zhang remained unmoved by his protestations.
With a placid smile, Scribe Zhang replied earnestly, “Lord Yang, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. We have no other choice, do we? Lord Shao has been deprived of proper rest for several days now. We’ve all witnessed his profound distress, and naturally, we share his concern. Madam Shao has been urged to rest by the Elder Master and Madam Shao herself. Until Lord Shao has fully recuperated, he insists on no disturbances.”
