Vol 2 Chapter 83: The Heavenly Demon Physique
The voice sounded incredibly youthful, more like that of a child than an elder. When it reached Thunder Pine's ears, the ancient tree spirit froze in surprise.
“A Child Immortal?”
During the tribulation that trapped the Ancestor of the Yin Corpse Sect, a boy clad in yellow robes, seemingly no older than ten, appeared out of the void. Thunder Pine had been focused on the tribulation and the Void Mystical Yin Spirit, but when the child emerged, it couldn't help but be amazed.
“I expected the Demon-Slaying Bureau to send someone, but I didn’t expect such a significant figure.”
“A significant figure? Compared to you—a grass and wood spirit that has cultivated to this level—I’m the one who should be in awe,” the boy said with a playful grin. “I heard that thousands of years ago, there was a faction in the Misty Forest entirely made up of grass and wood spirits. But a traitor arose within their ranks, slaughtering the entire tribe and fleeing to the Ancient Kingdom.”
“That traitor, the Malignant Plant who wiped out their kind, was you, wasn’t it?”
Thunder Pine chuckled. “As expected of one of the bureau's leaders, you’ve dug up my past so thoroughly.”
“But don’t worry, I’m no threat. Back then, I was young and foolish, thinking I’d found a family. Who would have guessed I’d stumbled into a faction of Malignant Plants? For self-preservation, I had no choice but to destroy them.”
“I’ve been keeping my head down in the Ancient Kingdom all these years.”“You certainly have been quiet,” the boy replied. “But one order from the Sect Regulatory Office, and here you are, unleashed.” He added, “You can stay in the Ancient Kingdom if you wish, but the Yin Corpse Sect cultivator? The Demon-Slaying Bureau will handle that.”
With a resounding boom, the Void Mystical Yin Spirit, who had just survived its tribulation but was severely weakened, was absorbed into the Celestial Prison summoned by the boy, along with its Void Mystical manifestation, the Black Coffin.
Thunder Pine's massive form appeared, revealing a face on its trunk as black as ink. Its gaze toward the boy was anything but friendly.
“Relax,” the boy said with a chuckle. “Using the tribulation to weaken it was the most efficient method. If I had directly intervened, I’d have had to deal with its countless strange tricks.”
“As a token of the Bureau’s gratitude, how about I adopt you as my foster son?”
“Go f*** yourself!” Thunder Pine barked irritably. “I’m no younger than you, kid! I’ve heard of the Demon-Slaying Bureau’s leader who cultivates the Child Immortal technique, remaining forever in a child’s form and, as a result, childless. You love adopting people as foster sons, don’t you?”
“Well, I’m not interested in being one of them!”
The boy sighed regretfully. “What a pity. I’ve adopted humans and beasts as foster children but never a grass and wood spirit.”
“It’s fine. That guy’s not of much use to you anyway. Most of his treasures were destroyed in his battle with the Ancient Kingdom’s experts. All that’s left is his memory, which you’d struggle to extract. Handing him over to the Bureau ensures his knowledge is put to maximum use.”
“Enough nonsense!” Thunder Pine snapped. “If I’m not satisfied, even if you’re Void Mystical, I won’t let this slide.”
“I’m curious what other cards you’re hiding. You’re not bluffing—I can sense that. But I can also tell you don’t want to play them,” the boy mused. Then, suddenly, he called toward the Frozen Pool, “Come on out, kid!”
Ripples spread across the pool’s surface, followed by a massive surge of water. A white-haired, blue-eyed youth emerged, his aura terrifying. Seventeen layers of freezing whirlpools surrounded him, and snow began falling from the sky.
“Qi Refinement Stage 17, peak level,” the boy said, observing Lin Jing.
“This Ice Soul Gu, which parasitized within me, has finally reached Foundation Establishment.”
“With Qi Refinement Stage 12 cultivation and the Ice Soul Gu of the Gu King’s bloodline, even an average Core Formation cultivator wouldn’t be able to defeat him.”
“Remarkable talent,” the boy said, his gaze admiring. “Only one level below the Ancient Imperial Prince with his Boundary-Breaking Beast’s assistance. Is this still the Longevity Body I thought I understood? It seems the Beast Taming Art and the Longevity Body are an extraordinary match.”
Pulled from the depths of the Frozen Pool by a powerful force, Lin Jing looked at the boy and Thunder Pine. “Senior, what’s going on here?” he demanded.
“That boy… is he…”
“Look closely. He’s alive, not a Yin Spirit,” Thunder Pine said. “This guy is one of the old monsters of the Demon-Slaying Bureau.”
“You’ve heard of the four great Demon-Slaying Families, right? Your detective friend Gao Sheng’s great-grandfather is an ancestor of one of them.”
“And this old monster before you? He’s the Nascent Soul Transformation Ancestor of those families, and they all call him foster father.”
“What!?” Lin Jing’s eyes widened as he glanced at the yellow-robed boy.
“The Yin Corpse Sect cultivator has been dealt with, but he’s taken the Yin Spirit,” Thunder Pine said coldly.
The boy laughed. “I may not have anything to offer you directly, but since you’re acting as his protector, compensating him instead should be fine, right?”
He preferred to reward Lin Jing, a human, rather than further empowering a Malignant Plant like Thunder Pine.
Thunder Pine was about to retort when the boy produced a jade slip.
“This contains the method for cultivating a physique from the continent’s former number-one demonic sect, the Heavenly Demon Sect.”
“The Heavenly Demon Physique can temporarily boost cultivation in exchange for lifespan. According to the Bureau’s records, during the sect’s downfall, a Nascent Soul demonic cultivator burned a thousand years of his lifespan, temporarily attaining Void Mystical strength. He maintained this power for ten years before falling back to Nascent Soul.”
“Though he lost a millennium of life, he survived a certain death scenario. During those ten years, he used his immense power to plunder resources beyond what his former strength could achieve.”
“Whether it was a loss or a gain depends on perspective. But for someone with a Longevity Body, cultivating the Heavenly Demon Physique is a surefire win. Burning a thousand years is hardly a concern.”
“So this technique really exists!” Thunder Pine exclaimed, delighted. It had long sought a demonic art to allow Lin Jing to trade lifespan for power and hadn’t expected to find it in the Bureau’s collection.
Then again, it made sense. The Bureau had dismantled countless demonic sects during the Ancient Kingdom’s founding wars.
“Not bad,” Thunder Pine said with a grin. “Though I didn’t expect the Bureau to offer a demonic technique as compensation.”
The boy gestured toward Lin Jing. “He’s one of only two Longevity Body cultivators alive. Losing him young would be a shame. This technique will give him a trump card to preserve his life, easing your burden as his protector.”
