Vol 2 Chapter 88: Followers

“What are you doing?!”

The Crimson Armored Demon-Slaying Guard’s pupils shrank as he was suddenly attacked by the Yin Corpse Sect cultivator.

“Wondering why I didn’t chase that brat?” The sect leader sneered. “Having activated my Heavenly Corpse Transformation to its full potential, I can’t allow you to walk away with the spoils.”

“After this battle, my cultivation will likely drop to the Foundation Establishment stage. But if I can secure a Core Formation corpse puppet, it won’t be a complete loss. With my talent, advancing to the Nascent Soul stage was never an option anyway.”

“A Core Formation corpse puppet will allow me to condense a high-quality Corpse Core and attain a false core with little hindrance.”

The Yin Corpse Sect leader's tone was cold. “That brat may have escaped, but now that I’ve regained control of the Five-Element Corpses, I’ll deal with you first.”

“No need to worry. My Heavenly Corpse Transformation will last long enough to finish you off. Afterward, I’ll find him and kill him too. I’ll even preserve your reputation.”

Having gained a surge of power, the first thing the sect leader did was launch a sneak attack on the Crimson Armored Guard. Observing this, the Divine Pine commented disdainfully, “At least the Yin Corpse Sect brat is acting sensibly. That Demon-Slaying Guard, relaxing his guard around a demonic cultivator—what an idiot.”

“Was this part of your plan, too?” the Divine Pine asked Lin Jing.

“It was a possibility I accounted for,” Lin Jing replied calmly. “That’s why I returned control of the Five-Element Corpses to him—to enhance his strength. Yin Corpse Sect cultivators are different. Even if they drop to the Foundation Establishment stage, they can form false cores and turn enemies into corpse puppets to bolster their power.”

“With such an increase in strength, it was almost certain he’d target the Demon-Slaying Guard first. Ideally, the guard would have reacted and realized the sect leader would betray him, leading to mutual destruction. Unfortunately, the guard didn’t catch on and thought I was still the shared enemy.”

“Still, this situation is easier to handle. Once his divine ability runs out, I can finish him off. And even if I leave now, he’s already infected with the Ice Soul Gu’s poison. He won’t live long.”

Lin Jing’s eyes flashed. The fate of the sect leader was sealed, much like what had happened to Senior Brother Ouyang years ago. The Ice Soul Gu’s poison was incurable.

The Divine Pine and Lin Jing’s telepathic exchange went unnoticed by the Twin Physiques, who remained paralyzed with fear. Although they had escaped the Yin Corpse Sect, they now found themselves in the hands of what appeared to be a demonic cultivator from the Gu God Sect.

“Senior, since he’s doomed anyway, why not finish him off now?” the girl stammered nervously.

“Why don’t you do it yourself?” Lin Jing asked. “Haven’t you killed anyone yet?”

Killing the Crimson Armored Guard would likely alert the Demon-Slaying Bureau. Lin Jing suspected this guard wasn’t the only one colluding with demonic sects. Perhaps his time would be better spent elsewhere.

“Then the spoils of war are mine,” the Divine Pine sighed, lamenting that these early-stage Core Formation cultivators weren’t challenging enough for Lin Jing.

Lin Jing was about to respond when, suddenly, a pine tree branch pierced the chest of the Yin Corpse Sect leader below. Blood streaked across his eyes as he realized he had been outplayed from the start.

With both Core Formation cultivators dead, Lin Jing retrieved a jade token. Though he had several Demon-Slaying Bureau tokens, only this one could establish contact.

The token had been given to him by Cold Moon Sword Immortal Feng Ning, a disciple of the Void Mystical Sword Ancestor from the Heavenly Sword Gate. While Feng Ning herself was only at the Core Formation stage, her status meant even top cultivators showed her respect.

Rather than act alone, Lin Jing decided to report the internal corruption to someone reliable.

Activating the token, a familiar voice echoed in his mind.

“Lin Jing? You’ve finally activated this jade token. Have you changed your mind about joining the Demon-Slaying Bureau?”

The voice belonged to Feng Ning.

“No, Senior Feng,” Lin Jing replied. “I’ve already joined under the invitation of Senior Tongzi Xian.”

“Tongzi Xian personally invited you?” Feng Ning’s surprise was evident.

Lin Jing briefly explained the circumstances of his joining and the incident involving the collusion between the local Demon-Slaying Bureau and demonic sects. Feng Ning’s tone turned cold.

“Well done. This isn’t just a problem with one bureau branch; it’s likely a widespread issue across the Air Domain. I’ll contact my associates in the Bureau to investigate. Handling this alone might be too much for you.”

Lin Jing nodded.

“But to think you could take on two Core Formation cultivators as a Qi Refinement practitioner... If word spreads, it will shock the Ancient Celestial Kingdom.”

“It was the Ice Soul Gu’s power,” Lin Jing said. “Surely you don’t think I could manage that with just my Qi Refinement cultivation.”

“True, I know the strength of Beast Taming cultivators depends on their beasts. Still, many won’t care about those details. They’ll only see ‘Qi Refinement defeats Core Formation’ and the fame that comes with it.”

Feng Ning chuckled. “Let them talk. Fame can be useful. And thanks to exaggerated stories like these, hidden techniques like the Hidden Dragon Arts remain relevant.”

Lin Jing agreed. Clever manipulation of rumors often kept hidden techniques thriving.

Ending the conversation, Lin Jing resolved to remain cautious around government-affiliated cultivators to avoid betrayal.

Turning to the Twin Physiques, he finally addressed them.

“Introduce yourselves. How did the Yin Corpse Sect capture you, and what makes your physique special?”

The young man stayed silent, paralyzed by fear, but the girl mustered the courage to reply.

“We’re from the Jiang family of Tianshui City, and we possess the Twin Physique. We were captured during a trip outside.”

“Twin Physique?” Lin Jing murmured.

The Divine Pine interjected, “That’s a rare physique with many uses. Kid, why not do a good deed and grant them an opportunity? Take them in as human companions. After all, a Holy Son can’t only have animal partners, right?”
