Chapter 47: The Demon-Suppressing Pagoda
After receiving his natal beast space treasure, Lin Jing once again expressed his gratitude to Elder Mo and pledged his undying loyalty to the Beast Taming Sect. “Alive, I am a disciple of the sect; dead, I am its ghost. Even if reincarnated into the animal realm, I will still serve the sect as a beast.” His fervent declaration left Elder Mo momentarily speechless.
“Alright, I understand your devotion,” Elder Mo sighed. “But for someone with the Longevity Body, you’re surprisingly lacking in composure. Let me send you back.”
“Thank you, Elder Mo, but we can return on our own,” Lin Jing replied. He had plans to pass through Cloud Cultivation Peak and test the Pine Leaf Mouse's progress from their recent training.
“It’s no trouble,” Elder Mo said, waving his hand. With the power of a Golden Core cultivator, transporting them was as effortless as the Black Bear Monster blowing away the white mouse earlier.
“In that case, could you drop us off at Cloud Cultivation Peak?” Lin Jing asked.
“Cloud Cultivation Peak?” Elder Mo raised an eyebrow. “What business do you have there… Oh, is this about the Squirrel’s Leap of Tiandu?”
Realizing something, he continued, “I had nearly forgotten about that spot. Do you know the history of the Pine Leaf Mouse clan and their connection to the sect’s guardian deity?”
“Yes,” Lin Jing nodded. “The last time Senior Brother Ouyang and I passed through Cloud Cultivation Peak, the Pine Leaf Mouse attempted the leap but failed. It has since undergone rigorous training, and I wanted to bring it back for another attempt.”
“Is that so...” Elder Mo’s interest was piqued. “Very well, let me take you there.”With a wave of his hand, Lin Jing felt a dizzying shift in his vision. The next moment, they were standing at the Squirrel’s Leap of Tiandu, with Elder Mo by their side. “Go ahead,” he gestured, seemingly intent on observing.
Unbothered by the audience, Lin Jing summoned the Pine Leaf Mouse, which was busy building its new den in the Suspended Gourd.
“After all that training, can you earn your place in the family annals? Let’s try again!” Lin Jing encouraged.
“Squeak?” The Pine Leaf Mouse blinked, surveying its surroundings. Realizing it had returned to Cloud Cultivation Peak, its emerald eyes lit up with renewed confidence. After enduring relentless mental training against terrifying illusions, its once fragile willpower had been honed to a state of tranquility.
Feeling invigorated by its growth, the Pine Leaf Mouse launched itself into action. With a swift motion, it summoned its largest red leaf, leaping onto it. A flash of red light followed as it soared skyward. Elder Mo, observing calmly, nodded to himself. He already knew the mouse’s capabilities well.
“A leap is still a leap, I suppose…” he muttered, unlike Senior Brother Ouyang, who had underestimated the mouse's abilities.
Unfortunately, despite reaching slightly higher than before, the Pine Leaf Mouse was again overwhelmed by the formidable pressure in mid-air. Teeth gritted, it tumbled back down, spinning along with the red leaf like a flaming wheel.
“Elder Mo! Catch it!” Lin Jing called out in alarm. Elder Mo casually intercepted the dazed mouse, placing it beside him.
Another failure. The Pine Leaf Mouse, groaning and retching, looked as though it had been struck by lightning—not because it couldn’t achieve the leap, but because it dreaded the continuation of its grueling training. ṟаꞐՕᛒƐṢ
“Failed again?” Elder Mo shook his head. “Even for a rare beast, this challenge seems insurmountable. What was the second sect master’s old friend thinking? Is it truly possible for a Pine Leaf Mouse to succeed?”
“Perhaps it will, once it advances to Foundation Establishment and evolves a Beast King bloodline,” Lin Jing suggested. “Or, Elder Mo, does the sect have a specialized location for mental strength training?”
Lin Jing had noticed diminishing returns from their illusion-based training. The Pine Leaf Mouse, aware they were only illusions, had begun developing resistance after repeated exposure. Illusion techniques were most effective in their first use.
“A place to temper the mind...” Elder Mo paused before nodding. “There is one—one I mentioned to you before.”
“The Demon-Suppressing Pagoda?” Lin Jing guessed.
“Precisely,” Elder Mo confirmed. “To thank the four sects for their assistance and guardianship of the pagoda, the Buddhist guest elder from the Demon-Slaying Bureau left behind a unique ability.”
“The pagoda consists of multiple levels, each with formations that draw upon the sealed demon’s power to keep it perpetually weakened, unable to cultivate or resist.”
“This demonic power is converted into demonic pressure on specific levels, creating a formidable test for those who enter.”
“But it isn’t the pressure itself that trains the mind. Surviving it activates the Buddhist elder’s gift—a sacred light that bathes the soul, significantly strengthening mental fortitude.”
“This was intended to help the four sects cultivate more demon-slaying cultivators, arming them with the courage and resolve to face demonic threats.”
The prospect intrigued Lin Jing. “Elder Mo, may the Pine Leaf Mouse and I enter?”
“Absolutely not!” Elder Mo's beard twitched. “The demonic pressure in the pagoda is not something a Qi Refining cultivator can endure. I’ve told you before—of the sect’s three major secret techniques, Immortal Rebirth requires extraordinary soul strength. Only disciples who have reached Foundation Establishment and become inheritance disciples are permitted to enter the pagoda to prepare for learning it.”
“If the mouse only faces Foundation Establishment-level pressure, it should manage,” Lin Jing reasoned. “And as for me, I should be fine as well.”
Lin Jing demonstrated by transforming into a towering Buddha-like figure, seated on a lotus throne. The majestic illusion exuded divine serenity, with 42 radiating beams of holy light connecting north and south, illuminating the entire peak.
“Elder Mo!” The Buddha’s eyes opened, and an oppressive aura descended upon Elder Mo, causing a bead of cold sweat to form on his forehead.
“I am a Buddha of the Celestial Realm, ambushed and forced to reincarnate in this world. I am but 50 Spirit Stones away from reopening the ascension path. Help me return, and I shall reward you greatly!” the Buddha’s voice boomed.
Startled, Elder Mo hesitated, but the Pine Leaf Mouse’s giggling gave it away. He quickly realized, “This is your Illusionary Path technique from the Bodhi Cavern Heaven! Such realism—it rivals the aura of the sect’s ancestors.”
“Elder, try pressuring me,” Lin Jing invited. Elder Mo complied, releasing his Golden Core pressure. Yet Lin Jing’s illusion, reinforced by intricate Purple Qi, rendered the pressure ineffective, as if it fooled not only the observer but the caster as well.
“Unbelievable…” Elder Mo was stunned by the effectiveness of Lin Jing’s illusionary art. “If that’s the case, you two truly could enter the pagoda to strengthen your minds. Ordinary demonic pressure won’t affect you.”
Reverting to his normal form, Lin Jing grinned. “That’s wonderful! By the way, Elder, this demon has been sealed for so long… Are you sure our entry won’t destabilize the seal?”
“Absolutely not.” Elder Mo was firm.
