Neither Khan nor Monica spoke. The two only needed to exchange a glance to understand their respective mood and act accordingly.
Monica walked toward Khan's couch, sitting on his lap and making herself comfortable. He left a short kiss on her neck before resuming work, and the two silently enjoyed each other's warmth during that rare, peaceful, and private moment.
The holographic screen above the interactive desk told Monica everything she needed to know. Khan was drawing the flight path of his imminent journey, accounting for anything he could think of. He had to consider much, but Monica had arrived when he was almost done.
Eventually, Khan devised a vague plan. He would have to run it with his scientists and other experts, but the basic strategy was complete.
In the initial stages, Khan would fly solo, amassing information and reaching as far as the available data and lack of a massive financial investment could bring him.
Afterward, once Khan had gained a better idea of where to go, he would invest more money and assets into it. Exploring the universe wasn't an easy thing to accomplish, but there was a limit to how much he could prepare, and he was willing to risk it after reaching that point.
Monica saw it all but read it from a different perspective. She thought about the time she would have to spend away from everything, cut away from politics and Baoway while following Khan in his desperate mission.
Of course, the Khan part was fine, if not greatly enjoyable. The couple desperately needed a holiday to get some time off from the myriads of problems littering their daily lives.
However, the trip wouldn't be a holiday at all. Khan would have to face the dangers connected to his curse. He would have to act as a proper scout and pioneer, venturing the universe to search for its deepest mystery, and Monica couldn't help but worry about whether she would drag him down.
Monica knew Khan didn't think in those terms. She had also considered the similarities with Cora and how Khan's behavior had changed. He would have never asked her to accompany him if he didn't deem her worthy of being at his side.Yet, the difference was undeniable. Monica was only a fourth-level warrior, while Khan was Khan. His recent power-up had been so massive it had created cracks in their relationship, leaving Monica farther and farther behind.
That wouldn't have been a problem during peaceful times. The gap in the couple's power didn't matter too much in the bedroom or during Baoway's calm days.
Still, Khan was about to jump on a long and probably dangerous journey on a mission no one had accomplished yet. Only someone as extraordinary as him could hope to succeed, and Monica didn't want to be the reason behind his failure.
Monica was extraordinary in her own way, but her expertise would have no relevance or use during the trip. Khan had only invited her because he wanted to be with her. Because he loved her, and she loved him.
Thinking about that awakened another problem in Monica's mind. She was a bit annoyed at how Khan could ask her to drop her entire life to accompany him, but that was still acceptable. Monica wanted nothing more than to be at his side, even as a simple wife.
Nevertheless, Monica felt she was failing at that, too. She was a worthy ruler, someone capable of replacing Khan's political figure. Monica had made sure of that, but she felt lacking in other aspects of being in a relationship.
The best check-ups in the world had cleared Monica, and she knew Khan had passed those, too. Theoretically, the couple should face no problem conceiving, but Monica had failed to remain pregnant, and not for lack of trying.
The aftermath of the birth control could have explained that delay, and the same went for Khan's mutations. However, time and perseverance should have solved everything. Except, they didn't.
Those worries inevitably piled up. Monica wasn't worthy of standing on the battlefield with Khan, and now it seemed she couldn't even give him a family. The couple could try more, and there were other ways. The trip would also provide them with the time they needed to get to the end of the matter, but Monica was still scared.
"You are worrying too much," Khan eventually whispered, "About stuff that has nothing to do with you."
Of course, Khan was aware of Monica's worries, and his nose quickly picked up on them. Honestly, he found them stupid. Khan was sure he was the problem there, and his love for Monica had nothing to do with her ability to give him a child.
Yet, Monica was like Khan in those matters. She blamed herself for everything, and women tended to take similar news harder. Monica couldn't help but find herself unworthy of Khan in every sense, even if he would have never gotten that far without her. ṙãΝȮ𐌱ÊS
"It's been a while since we could do this," Monica responded, turning sideways to nestle herself on Khan's chest. "We have always been in a rush lately."
"Our lives have become complicated," Khan sighed, ignoring the holographic screen to hold his seemingly sleepy Fiancée. "I find myself missing when I was your secret boyfriend."
"Things were so simple back then," Monica giggled. "Our biggest problem was finding beds where to sleep together."
"And finding condoms," Khan reminded. "Don't forget those."
"How did we even finish all the condoms on the ship?" Monica wondered.
"I blame your butt," Khan stated.
"Of course you do," Monica said, adjusting herself and clinging to Khan's exposed abs.
The two fell silent, enjoying their respective presence. That diversion often worked to keep troublesome thoughts at bay, but too much was at stake now for the couple to attain proper
peace.
"Do you want me to get another infusion?" Monica eventually asked. "It won't push me to the fifth level, but every bit helps."
"I didn't ask you to come so you could face dangers," Khan declared.
"So," Monica continued, "Should I just watch from the sidelines while you act crazy by
yourself?"
"That's not what I said," Khan responded.
"But it is what I'd end up doing," Monica pointed out.
"I became strong so you all wouldn't have to suffer," Khan commented.
"And yet," Monica said, sending a hand behind her to seize Khan's bandaged arm. "You still get hurt. How do you think I feel seeing this?"
"What can I say?" Khan asked. "I am a warrior. I must be a warrior to do something against the scarlet eyes."
"And what's my role in all of that?" Monica questioned. "I thought I had to be at your side, but I'm not sure I can anymore."
"What are you even saying?" Khan scoffed, lowering his head to make his way through the barrier of curls. "I've never been with you over how well you fought."
"But we aren't kids anymore," Monica exclaimed, opening her eyes to let the blue glow fill her vision. "We can't just be a couple in love anymore. I thought I could handle politics while you dealt with the battlefield, but you are asking me to leave that now."
"Why can't we just be a couple in love?" Khan asked. "What's so bad about it?"
Monica didn't have the heart to reply. She stared deep into Khan's glowing eyes before glancing at the silver crown on his head. She quickly lowered her gaze, leaning forward to seal his lips with a kiss. Escaping through sex sounded better than whatever that conversation was
doing.
