Chapter 1305: Violent landing
The artificial gravity miraculously protected the ship from the impact with the planet’s atmosphere, but couldn’t stop the tremors. At that speed, the friction force with the dense air was unfathomable, and the vessel’s insides experienced part of its might.
Everything shook, deepening the damage Khan’s presence had caused. The few cracks on the bridge’s floor widened, revealing inactive or sizzling wiring. The ship seemed on the verge of coming undone, but the situation was even worse outside.
The mana barrier prevented the worst-case scenario, but opening the ship’s entrance put Khan before a scorching landscape. The no-longer transparent membrane trembled to no end, threatening to give in to the friction force. Some gaps had already appeared on it, turning the black metal under it burning red.
The ship was doing its best, but the momentum was too great. The effort to survive that predicament was also depleting the already low energy reserves at high speed. It wouldn’t be long until the vessel remained defenseless against the planet’s atmosphere.
At that pace, the ship would never reach the surface. It would implode far earlier, ground into nothingness by the friction force. The entropy in the area almost warned Khan about that approaching critical point, but he had the power to stop it.
Khan could already picture the imminent struggle in his mind, but didn’t hesitate. He stepped forward, crossing the entrance while clinging to its edge. His clothes immediately took fire as he exposed himself to the friction force, but a cold sensation promptly arrived.
The mana barrier was already on the verge of falling apart, so it crumbled when Khan crossed it. Yet, a layer of ice rose from the hull, covering the ship and encapsulating it into a protective, solid shield.
Khan had to abandon his handhold at that point, but his body was already on the move. His cells came alive as his presence unfolded, denying the surrounding air’s right to exist.
The friction force suddenly disappeared since no air could exist around Khan anymore. That brought some respite to the ship and its new barrier, but also stopped the deceleration that had begun since its entrance into the atmosphere.
Of course, Khan planned to take that process into his own hands.
Khan’s speed was by no means trivial. He shared the ship’s momentum but accelerated even further to fly under the vessel, stopping at its relative center.
A grey landscape stretched everywhere in Khan’s vision. The quadrant didn’t seem to feature any trace of life or water, and the faint metallic smell in the dense air he had previously breathed added more details to that uncharted territory.
Nevertheless, Khan only subconsciously absorbed that information. His conscious mind was on something else. He trusted Liiza’s barrier, but the spell wouldn’t prevent bumps and pressure from spreading inside the ship, so he had to tackle the task gradually.
Khan lifted his arms, planting his palms on the white barrier, searching for the best handhold he could find on that smooth, slippery surface. Luckily, his wife sensed him, and her ice stretched forward, enveloping his fingers to secure him to the ship.
Once the handhold was secured, Khan relied on a mixture of his cell’s innate abilities and his gentlest kicks to decelerate the ship and alter its trajectory. The vessel was on a straight, vertical crash course toward that grey surface, and Khan had to change that to have enough time to address its momentum.
The ship’s weight and speed put Khan’s muscles to the test, but his cells and mana joined their forces, unleashing inhuman strength that allowed him to be up to the challenge.
The vessel slowed down while applying untold weight on Khan. It also straightened itself, slowly growing horizontal. Yet, its speed remained too high, and the grey surface arrived earlier than Khan had predicted.
Khan applied more strength to his push before his feet landed on dusty, almost sandy, grey ground. The action countered the impact’s violence, saving the vessel from heavier repercussions, but his body and skin endured its full might.
Moreover, the ship was horizontal by then, but its momentum was still strong. The vessel dragged Khan forward, and his feet dug grooves into that grey, metallic sand, setting his heels aflame.
Khan could deliver kicks to shorten the process, but didn’t bother to. The ship was already decelerating as it was. Anything more than that would only make the process more violent, and Khan preferred to suffer rather than put his wife and kid in harm’s way.
Khan’s feet dug deeper into the grey sand. His legs followed, but his soles hit a solid surface once his knees were submerged. That caused another bump to spread into the ship and worsened the friction force, but also finalized the landing.
The momentum kept waning until it completely dispersed. Khan finally stopped, and the ice around his hands opened, allowing him to put the ship down.
The ship lifted clouds of grey dust when it crashed on the sandy ground, but Khan couldn’t bother being gentle now. He jumped out of the grooves, ignoring how far they stretched and his bleeding legs, to rush toward the vessel’s entrance. The ice there melted, too, and his senses immediately stretched inside.
Three clear and unharmed auras touched Khan’s senses. He also spotted Liiza’s head peeking past the pilot’s seat. The ship’s insides were a mess, but Zalpa, Liiza, and the baby were fine. Somehow, they had survived that predicament.
Nevertheless, the danger wasn’t over.
The sense of uneasiness that had followed Khan throughout the high-speed escape had intensified during the landing and was approaching its peak now.
Khan felt that something was coming, so he limited the inspection at that brief check-up before walking away, his body eventually rising into the air as he put some distance from the vessel.
The torn, bleeding flesh on Khan’s legs and feet rose during the flight. He remained near the surface, so pieces of damaged tissues fell to the ground, mixing with the grey sand while healthy skin replaced them.
By the time Khan stopped, he was completely healed. Except for tattered, mostly gone trousers, he was naked, and his stomach sent hungry groans to his mind, but his eyes remained on the sky, studying the two dark figures descending toward him.
“I really hope you can understand me,” Khan announced, clicking growls and thunder resounding from the bottom of his throat, mixing with his voice. “I want you to realize how big of a fuck-up you made.”
