Chapter 288: Heavenly Tribulation (1)

“Ryu! What’s taking you so long? Hurry up and bring that man.”

The young boy’s ears pricked up as he heard his uncles words enter his mind. His expression changed to one of annoyance.

“Tsk. Damn geezer.” Ryu cursed under his breath.

Without another word, he sent a slash out, opening up a rift in space. He took a quick look around the battlefield, seeing all of the unconscious bodies littered around before quickly disregarding them.

What happened here was none of his business.

With that, he walked through the rift with Victor over his shoulder. As soon as he walked through the rift, it closed.

What was left was now silence and the stench of death over the battlefield.

No one could have predicted the events that had happened on this day, nor could they have prepared accordingly. The puppeteers which pulled the strings from above had pulled the rug out from everyone.

By utilizing the greedy Amon, they were able to set up an array that could breach the Heavenly Barrier, allowing a small army of invaders to enter and wreak havoc.

It had been so unexpected that not even Rubick and the other Human’s were able to react in time, leaving Earth’s fate up to Jayce and the others. Thankfully, they had just managed to pull it off due to a number of factors.

Firstly, if humanity was still stuck using the system, they would have been sitting ducks after losing its powers. It was only because Jayce had chanced upon cultivation and they were given resources by Rubick that they were able to put up a fight to begin with.

Jayce had also been able to take out Dia, one of the two Core Formation cultivators that appeared in the beginning before forcing Baran into the illusion formation. Without his quick thinking and vicious actions, they would have been overrun once the third Core Formation enemy arrived.

The biggest enigma, and probably the saving grace of Earth was Victor.

The true death of his adopted son had triggered his rage and fury, awakening the Dragons Blood that flowed through his veins. While it was uncertain how our why he was in possession of Dragons Blood, the fact remained that he was the biggest contributor.

If his transformation did not alert the Dragonkin, then Shakar would have been free to destroy the entire planet after taking out Victor.

Jayce who had been unconscious since exiting the illusion formation, suddenly began to stir from his slumber. His eyes fluttered open, seeing the cloudy sky up above the battlefield.

His body ached, yet he forced himself to his feet. The last thing he had remembered was a four armed alien swinging a terrifying Warhammer on the battlefield.

Feeling his vision swim for a moment from getting up to fast, he did his best to stabilize himself. A brief glance over the battlefield made his stomach tighten.

“Is everyone dead?” He murmured, feeling a deep pain in his heart.

“Lianna!” Jayce’s thoughts instantly turned to his woman as he quickly scanned the battlefield for her, his face filled with panic.

With his enhanced senses, he was finally able to locate her body some distance away. Without hesitation, he dashed towards her with all the speed he could muster, sweeping her up into his arms.

He could feel the warmth of her body and the slow rhythmic breathing which filled him with a huge sense of relief. It looked like she had just fallen unconscious.

But before he could really relax, there was a disturbance in the air above them. The clouds which had all gathered to block the breach began to act wildly, growing darker and darker.

The heavens rumbled with rage as heavenly tribulation began to roar into life. It was as if it had been in a deep slumber for all this time, only to find out that it had been violated while it was asleep.

Jayce began to tremble in fear as the lightning began to flash wildly in the air.

For some reason he felt as if the heavens were turning their attention onto him, inspecting him closely. He felt exposed, as if he could hide nothing from the entity in the sky.

He suddenly felt the pressure on his body release, like he had been granted a pardon, at least for now. Yet the lightning didn’t stop accumulating, stirring within the clouds as if charging up for an attack.

A few moments later, the lightning began to rain down upon the battlefield, scorching the Earth and anything that was unfortunate enough to be in its way.

At first, Jayce thought that the lightning was indiscriminate, yet he was proven wrong. The strikes were aimed specifically at the alien invaders who were unconscious within the battlefield, turning them to ashes directly.

The heavens were angrily purging the invaders that did not belong to Earth. It was like an avenger, ridding the world of those who had come with bad intentions.

It only took less than a minute for the remaining aliens to be turned to ash. The lightning then receded into the clouds above, yet they did not look like they were done.

Jayce felt a shiver run down his spine as the heavenly tribulation turned its attention to him once more. This time however, it lacked the rage from beforehand.

’Is this because I’m a Core Formation cultivator?’ Jayce thought inwardly.

He knew some things about Heavenly Tribulation, mainly that it was a test for cultivators who had broken through. In all likelihood, he would probably have to try and survive the baptism of the heavenly lightning right now.

Jayce wasn’t sure why this was only happening now and not when he first entered into the Core Formation realm, but it probably had something to do with Earth’s special circumstances.

The fact that Earth had already evolved beforehand, while also regressing back to a lower plain made things much more complicated.

Now that there was a breach in the barrier, it was likely that the Heavens had been reawakened.

Jayce’s expression stiffened as he felt the power within the tribulation surge. He quickly looked down at Lianna and his gaze softened.

“If I don’t live through this, just know that I love you. Live a good life and take care of everyone for me.” He said softly, leaning down and giving her a kiss.
