Wu Long looked over the battlefield with a satisfied gaze.
General Feng’s forces were overwhelmingly and confidently crushing the first waves of ants that arrived.
Of course, it helped that the absolute majority of them were Mortal Grade Demonic Beasts, with only 7 low-level 1st-tier Profound Grade appearing thus far, allowing the Eternal Duality Valley members to adjust, and get used to fighting them before more powerful specimen arrive.
“The Formation seems to work fine”, Lian Zhiqiu sighed with relief, as the bodies of slain ants were swiftly collected, “Though there are a few corrections I’d make”
If they were left as is, they would have made this defensive battle significantly harder, as the corpses would eventually pile up and compromise the footing, and impede maneuverability.
After all, the Spiritual Qi here was not yet dense enough for flight.
This could be mitigated by manually collecting the corpses into Spatial Rings, but in a situation of constant combat this would only create unnecessary distractions. Although, it was acceptable for expeditionary attacks deep into the ant army, since the Formation did not reach that far, and leaving corpses without collecting them was a waste of good resources.
General Feng, as always, led by standing at the very front and fighting alongside his soldiers.
He left the overall strategic command to Feng Yi, who stood on the current highest point constructed in the fortress with Wu Long and the beauties, several people with large war drums standing behind them, responding to Feng Yi’s commands.
The beating of drums changed, and the troops moved, seamlessly changing positions to allow those who had yet to join fighting, have a chance to gain experience before the siege became more intense.
Her bow was ready as well, and occasionally, her arrows flew above the heads of the soldiers to strike a Profound Grade ant that approached the front-line.
The attacks soon came from another direction, not visible behind the World Stone from this position.
However, Feng Yi was observing the situation with her Spiritual Sense, thus being able to react.
With a word from her, glass flasks with stink pills were thrown in, as the first test of effectiveness.
The army of ants almost immediately became disoriented, and stumbled as the second row trampled on the first one which stopped, and soon piles of giant ants formed in the front, while the army behind gradually lost momentum, and began stumbling around.
“First test, successful”, Feng Yi sighed with a bit of relief, since a big part of their defense depended on these specialized stink pills working.
Yu Huan sighed as well, a smile appearing on her lips. She was ready to make adjustments at any time, in case there were any problems with the stink pills, a team of her alchemist on standby here. She added, “Now we need to test the duration”
Feng Yi nodded, “I will keep rotating troops there to react in case the effect lasts shorter time than expected, but for now, the ‘back’ area where the stink pills are deployed will serve as resting zone”
The idea was, to never fight in all directions at once, and keep a 200 degrees area permanently covered under stink pill effect, allowing them to concentrate on fighting in the figurative ‘front’ part of the circular fortress, the remaining 160 degrees that were easy to control for a single commander.
Of course, for now, they needed to test the duration of the effect, so they would allow it to completely wear off at least once, which was why the troops in that area were expected to start fighting once the effect weakened but not completely gone.
“We should probably look
“You look so smug”, Fen Baihu chuckled, giving Wu Long a look full of amusement.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”, he smiled in good mood, looking at his beauties that were so focused, he turned his gaze to her next, and her cheeks became a bit rosy.
“Being so completely and openly smitten with your women can be judged pretty harshly by the cultivation world, you know”, she said shaking her head with a smile.
“Why would I care how I’m judged?”, he shrugged his shoulders, “It’s just what feels natural to me. I love who I love, and show it however I want”
Hong Yue, who stood to the side with Hong Ye, slightly widened her eyes, overhearing that conversation. She caught herself thinking that she understood Hong Ye more and more.
Her twin sister showed a half-amused half-mischievous look in her crimson eyes, sensing that the “win-win-win strategy” was gradually working.
Of course, Hong Ye didn’t just implement the strategy without any preparations. She was experienced enough to know, that when you set out to do something, it is best to learn from those who already succeeded in doing it.
She caught the gaze of Gong Cui, who showed her a thumbs up with a wide grin. Hong Ye inwardly chuckled, returning the thumbs up.
“What was that?”, Gong Liwei asked her little sister with surprise, seeing the ‘secret’ and clearly conspiratorial exchange between the two.
“Eh?!”, Gong Cui’s eyes widened as she turned to look at her sister, “A-…Ahaha! I was just saying: good! You know… good!”
She repeated the thumbs up with a slightly awkward grin.
“…I see”, Gong Liwei almost chuckled at how obvious it was, now fully convinced there was some kind of hidden agreement between them.
It was certainly unexpected, to an extent, even shocking, given who Hong Ye was.
But as Gong Liwei pondered, ‘But then again, do I really want to know?’, she quite quickly reached an answer, ‘… No, no I don’t’
She knew it was likely something harmless, as was always the case with Gong Cui, simply shaking her head and turning to look at the battle again, causing the latter to rejoice at how ‘masterfully’ she handled it that her sister didn’t even suspect anything.
The first 2nd-tier Profound Grade Demonic Beast that arrived was confronted by General Feng, defeated fairly quickly, at the same time, as the soldiers were now gradually allowed to tackle 1st-tier Profound Grade ants, in groups at first.
Unlike Sects or armies consisting of cultivators, who all fought individually, General Feng’s troops fought as a collective, although they of course always honed their individual skills at well.
But it was that collective fighting power that shined in battles like this, as the warriors with highest cultivation could tackle 2nd-tier and potentially even 3rd-tier Profound Grade beasts despite being only in Essence Awakening Realm.
They were efficiently dispatching waves of Demonic Beasts without much difficulty, like a wall of death.
As soon as any group was under pressure, another stepped in, and fatigue was also managed through rotating troops out.
Nie Xiwang stood next to Feng Yi, giving her accurate assessment of the conditions of every group of soldiers.
