"Do you think I have no chance of getting that book?" Alex asked. "Even if I just want it temporarily."
Silvermist shook his head lightly. "I doubt he'll ever want to part with his book, considering how much he treasures it," he said. "He won't even let anyone else see what it looks like."
Alex found himself raising an eyebrow in return. "Have you not seen the book, master?" he asked.
"No," Silvermist said, looking at Alex with narrowed eyes now. "Have you?"
Alex nodded. "He showed it to us during the orientation for the tournament," he said. "And I saw it again during the second time we gathered when he came to personally check my pill on the platform."
"When he covered you with his lantern fire?" Silvermist asked.
"Lantern fire?" Alex asked, confused about what his master meant by that.
"The Alchemy God's creation is a lantern with an ever-burning flame inside. The fire he used came from it," Silvermist answered.
"Oh, I see. Yes, at that time. He took the book out to check if my recipe matched what I said since one of my ingredients was wrong," Alex said.
Silvermist seemed interested in the book. "Tell me more about it," he said.Alex told his master about the Book of Endless Recipes, its thick size, its metallic blue cover, and the picture of a scroll on the cover.
Remembering the scroll made him recall the memory of the coffin and the scythe, which he got from the Alchemy God. He still had no context or answers for most of what those memories meant.
Silvermist was happy to finally learn about the book. He seemed to have wondered about it for a long time as well. That let Alex know just how secretive the Alchemy God was with his book.
Which then made him wonder why he showed it off to the tournament participants so much. Was it really just to bring out someone who may have the other two books?
Alex thought about the matter only briefly before Silvermist got up from his seat.
"Let's go get your Wood root improved."
Alex and Silvermist left the court not long after, with Grimsight following them. They didn't use teleportation formations this time around and instead flew in Silvermist's boat since the location was close enough.
The sect they went to was called the Towering Snake Sect. Even though the Medicine World wasn't a place known for its regular sects, this sect was still quite well-known in the Trueflame Continent and was easily one of the best to go to if you didn't want to join a regular profession.
The sect was apparently a loyal customer of the Silvermist Alchemy Court, so Silvermist had been allowed by their sect master to use their special formation. There were some other deals going on beneath the surface to make this happen, but Silvermist didn't bore Alex with the details.
Alex arrived at the mountain where the formation lay and sat in the center. According to what he had been told before being sent there, he had to sit inside a small circle in the middle, and anything outside of the circle would be destroyed to turn into pure Wood aura that would then be fed into him to improve his spiritual root.
After understanding what was going to happen, Alex spread out the many treasures his master had brought along.
There were a few pieces of bamboo wood with thick Wood aura in them. There were many different types of leaves, all Immortal-grade. There was a strong green crystal of some sort that radiated Wood aura too strong to just be in the Immortal realm.
There were many other such treasures laid all around him. Then, he closed his eyes and began cultivating. That was the signal for those running the formation to begin.
Alex was protected by a barrier of sorts that hid almost everything from his senses. But it couldn't hide things from his eyes when he looked for them. His surroundings became a fog of green, with a few spots of other colors that quickly disappeared as soon as they appeared.
Anything that wasn't Wood aura was destroyed so that all that remained on the mountain was Wood aura. The Wood aura flew to Alex next, seemingly with a mind of its own, as it found its way to Alex's dantian.
Alex kept cycling his Qi while the Wood aura began affecting the Wood spiritual root on either side of his dantian. The changes that were happening were something Alex was very familiar with.
Before he became an Immortal, he had made a Wood spiritual root-improving pill as well, which had made it much better than it originally was, and now it was improving even further.
Alex had been made aware beforehand that it could get uncomfortable at some point and that he just had to stick through it, but nothing of that sort happened at all. The improvement was slow and gradual, but it was mostly fine.
A few days passed while the treasures around Alex finally broke down completely, and the energy from it all flowed into him. Once it was done, the formation slowly began to wind down and stop as well.
At the same time, Alex stopped his cultivation and felt his new and improved Wood root.
He was surprised by how much better it had gotten than before. To his surprise, his Wood root was now perhaps his fifth-best spiritual root, vying for fourth place where his Fire root remained.
His Yang and Metal roots were of the Supreme grade, so they couldn't be touched. And his Yin root was all but Supreme as well, so it was far superior to his other roots.
But his Fire root, the root that was perhaps the best he had before he began improving everything, was now head-to-head against his worst spiritual root.
Alex couldn't help but wonder: if his Wood root could be improved to such a degree, what sort of change would the other roots show?
