Chapter 209: Over Again

He forced himself to stand, though shakily. Looking down at Malakai with disdain.

The Sutrex were kings in Kaer Thorn district. One of the leading clans. And as a fleshling, Legan was a direct descendant, akin to a vein.

Mistakenly bumping into someone like him on the streets was enough to have one’s entire lineage erased. And this street rat had hit him. Multiple times.

Despite his condition, Legan’s confidence burned bright. He was sure this “spy” would begin trembling after hearing who he was.

But Malakai’s next words made his eyes narrow.

“You can stop altering my appearance now.”

‘Who’s he talking to?’

Legan blinked.

He hadn’t missed the name Malakai muttered earlier before his guards had been frozen.

Before he could process it, Malakai’s face began to shift and morph.

‘He’s revealing his true self.’

Legan’s eyes stayed locked as the black hair shifted from rusted brown… to red… to blood red.

His eyes flushed to the same hue, and his features sharpened into that of a boy with a cold, handsome face. Innocent, yet terrifying.

‘No way.’

Legan’s heart slammed against his chest. That face…

“It’s impossible.”

He felt like the world was lying to him, but he was far too logical to believe otherwise right now. It was right in front of him.

There wasn’t a single person in the West who wouldn’t recognize that face. Those crimson eyes. That crimson hair…

The Ninth Vein of the Sanguine family.

Malakai Von Sanguine.

The silver light from the moon bathed the alleyway in its radiance, as though marking the moment the devastating realization was made.

Under this light, Whiteshade just stared—dazed—unable to utter even a single word.

But Malakai had never been one for patience.

Bam!

A palm slammed into the side of Whiteshade’s face. Blood and spittle sprayed through the air as his body was sent crashing into the wooden wall.

The overwhelming pain seemed to snap him out of his reverie. He crumpled to the floor, ears ringing from the force of the blow. Blood leaked from his mouth as he struggled to rise, but despite everything, his mind remained fixed on trying to comprehend what was happening.

“N-Ninth Vein?” Whiteshade croaked, as if needing to confirm it. As if hoping he was mistaken.

But the seconds dragged on—and all he received was Malakai’s cold, quiet stare. The same gaze he’d seen through the screens during the Hunt.

It’s him.

Whiteshade’s heart pounded like it would explode. All he could think about was how he’d treated Malakai up till now.

The way he’d spoken down to him. The way he’d ordered men to gang up and beat him.

The way he’d threatened the Ninth Vein of the Sanguine Clan; said he’d make him a slave.

Suddenly, everything began to make sense.

His fighting skills. Those piercing eyes that had never belonged to any street rat he’d ever seen.

The unshakable confidence.

He hadn’t been dealing with a rat. From the very beginning… he’d been dealing with a prince of the West.

Legan gave a soft, bitter chuckle despite his pain. ‘Did I actually threaten him with the Sudrex Clan?’

He couldn’t help but imagine how absurd that must have sounded in Malakai’s ears. Like an ant baring its teeth at a giant.

If the Sanguine Clan caught wind that someone had harmed a Vein, the Sudrex Clan would be wiped out that same night.

Darkness would descend. They’d all be laid to rest, along with the name Sudrex, before sunrise. Legan shuddered.

He had fucked up.

He had fucking fucked up.

“W-What are you doing here?” The words tumbled out without filter.

“My reason for being here is of no concern to you,” Malakai replied, his voice cold. “I will be asking the questions tonight. Tell me about the Red Maw.”

Legan’s eyes widened, and for the first time, his thoughts began to align and everything started to click.

Why the Ninth Vein was here, in the streets of Kaer Thorne. Why he had been with Rhett.

‘He must’ve just arrived.’

The news had already spread: Malakai had chosen Rhett as his captain. It had shocked many, but most had been expecting his arrival ever since.

Legan had men at the borders. Minutes, mere minutes, would’ve been enough to get wind of something this important.

But he’d missed it.

All because he left the base to chase down a damn street rat. And even if he had gotten word, he would never have imagined the Ninth Vein of the Sanguine Clan would dress like a commoner and step into a gambling den.

Regardless, his mind kept circling back to one thing.

The Red Maw.

‘Is that what he’s after?’

Legan’s fists clenched, his thoughts darkening. That wasn’t good.

The Red Maw was his pride. His sweat. His blood. He had built it from the ground up, painstakingly over years. Even as his clan labeled him a waste, it was the one thing that was truly his.

There was no way he’d give that up, not even to a fucking Vein.

His eyes flicked to the unconscious bodies behind Malakai, his thoughts churning.

He can’t kill me, Whiteshade reminded himself, and his gaze returned to Malakai.

He had to find a way out of this.

“W-What about the Red Maw…” he trailed off.

“Tell me everything about it,” Malakai said.

“W-Why?”

Malakai stared at Legan for a moment, letting the silence stretch.

Then, just as Legan realized the weight of what he had just done, questioning a Vein, another slap smashed across his face, driving his head deeper into the wooden wall.

More blood leaked from his mouth and scalp.

As he regained himself, Legan clenched his fist and gritted his teeth.

“N-Ninth Vein… I had no idea who you were, and I apologize for my actions,” he said. “But this is too much, even for a Vein. The Sudrex are one of the ruling clans of Sylvastein. We would not take this disrespect lightly.”

Even the most naive would see the threat in those words.

Malakai was spending a year in Sylvastein, earning the ire of the Sudrex would only bring him trouble.

In response, Malakai simply stared.

“Let’s start all over again,” he said, voice cold.

“Make his blood boil.”

Hey guys. Unfortunately there’ll be no chapters tomorrow. I lost someone really close to me and I can’t function well right now. Cheers.
