Chapter 245: Grate
Malakai didn’t need lens to see that his disregard grated on Lina’s nerves.
However, he saw no reason to care about it at all. The girl had been nothing but hostile since the moment he met her.
She had wanted to ram her blade into his back, after all. He had only escaped that thanks to his battle sense and Nyx, otherwise, he wouldn’t be where he was right now.
Her endless glares only proved that she hated his guts and resented his presence here at their coven. Malakai saw no reason to offer someone like that even a moment of his time.
He kept his guard up as she approached from behind. Ignoring her grinding teeth and piercing glare, Malakai focused instead on the world before him.
It was nighttime. There were no signs of the sun, but the coven was brightly lit.
He hadn’t been able to see it before because he had been carrying Grunde, but now he could. The Gor’Mekhai lived in harmony with nature.
The city of Sylvastein claimed the same thing, but the Gor’Mekhai showed it.
Faintly glowing orbs of light floated across the space, and the orange glowing veins running through the trees illuminated parts of the coven.
Their homes were built into the trees. It was as though portions of the trunks had been carved to allow space for them to live.
But what truly took his breath away was the sheer number of beasts he saw. In every corner, some kind of slumbering creature rested, each one calm, sleeping.
He turned his gaze to where he had come from before, spotting a massive tree, larger than hundreds combined, piercing into the sky before branching out into numerous thick arms. It was as though it had a village of its own
’That’s where the meeting was held.’ Malakai realized. That was where he carried Grunde from.
It meant he had walked quite a distance. From here, he could see the tree’s top towering above the others.
’This is the outskirts.’
It made sense. At least before the Drah’Morr, if their words were accurate, they were still considered outsiders. That should change after the competition, at least, Malakai hoped so.
The entire coven was quiet, and Malakai welcomed the peace. It allowed him to think clearly. Unfortunately, he wasn’t alone tonight. Lina eventually caught up and passed him, taking the lead.
Her angry stomps were the only thing disturbing the night, and that grated on Malakai’s nerves. He glanced at her, taking a good look.
She was a foot smaller than him, busty but toned.
Most of her skin was bare, and she had burst in all the right places. Her hips swayed as she moved, and though she was walking with angry steps, Malakai could see the caution and deliberation in each movement.
She knew how to fight, there was no doubt about that.
“You caught me off guard,” Lina finally spoke, her voice hard. But no response came, even after a second.
Lina clenched her fist. “Don’t think what happened before will happen again. The next time we fight, you won’t be able to land any more lucky blows.”
Another second passed, and still no response came. Lina stopped and turned. Her voice was ice. “I’m talking to you.”
“So?” was all Malakai said, an eyebrow raised.
Lina seemed to see red. Her arms twitched, as though itching to reach for her dagger. But her hands had barely neared it when a cold aura washed over her.
Lina narrowed her eyes. ’Killing intent.’ It was cold. Thick. But her expression only twisted even more. She grabbed the hilt of her daggers and the tension soared.
The two locked eyes, and the night seemed to grow colder.
The tension was about to reach a breaking point when Lina clicked her tongue.
“You’re lucky the Grath’Mekhai already promised you hospitalit—”
Malakai turned and began walking away before she could finish.
Lina ground her teeth. “Skah’tor,” she cursed, waving him off and walking in another direction.
Malakai breathed a sigh of relief. He was glad to finally be free of the annoying girl.
Now alone in the peace of the night, he took in the freshness of nature and felt it invigorate his body.
Malakai had never felt so good just breathing in air. It was as though everything in this forest existed to make them stronger.
He suddenly had the urge to abandon modern life and live in nature, anything that would help him grow his power and reach a new height.
Soon enough, he stopped messing around and focused on the task at hand. The reason why he was doing all this.
’The feeling was strongest when I was in that place.’
The life essence was leading him to something, something he didn’t yet understand. But he knew it could only be good.
Malakai had felt the life essence urging him with more force than usual when he had been in that space with the rest of the Gor’Mekhai coven.
Unfortunately, with so many eyes on him, he couldn’t make any moves. But Malakai knew for certain, what he was looking for was at that tree.
He glanced toward the massive tree once more, narrowing his eyes. He would find out what it was soon enough.
Regardless, he had noticed something in the brief moment he was there. ’The vita density…’
It was the highest Malakai had ever felt. It was like standing beside the Blood Sovereign. With his vita field, it felt like he was swimming inside a sea of raw energy.
It was unnatural. And the more he thought about it, the more it excited him. Whatever was hidden here, he would unveil it.
Malakai eventually found a quiet spot without any beasts in sight to sit and meditate. He wasn’t getting any sleep tonight. With so much vita in the air, he would have to be stupid not to train.
…
“Grath’Mekhai! I propose we kill them to send a message. This could all be a plot by those savages,”
