Chapter 275: Howling

Malakai’s world went dark. It happened so suddenly that it was as though a switch was flipped.

As the slap landed, Malakai didn’t hear the boom of the explosion that came from it. He didn’t even feel the slap land.

All Malakai felt at that moment was the roaring wind slamming against his body as he cut through the terrain.

Sound came back to him. And the first thing he heard was the wind howling around him, then the countless booms he left in his wake as he slammed through multiple obstacles.

As his momentum was stopped by what Malakai assumed was a boulder, the pain came.

It felt as though his body had been crushed beneath a barrage of countless boulders. There wasn’t a single bone in Malakai’s body that didn’t feel broken at that moment.

Malakai wheezed, then exhaled slowly, intense pain roaring through him. Breathing felt like countless bone shards were cutting through his lungs.

Malakai attempted to open his mouth, only to feel another roar of pain surge through his body. The darkness hadn’t faded, he still couldn’t see.

His mind was spinning, but right now, all he could think about was that one slap. The condition it had put him in.

Malakai’s face was deformed.

He couldn’t see it, but his mouth felt wrong. His cheekbones were sunken beyond what should be possible, and it felt like he had no teeth. His lower mouth had bent at an unnatural angle, and his face had split into two halves.

Seconds passed, and yet Malakai still couldn’t see. He knew now what type of darkness creature had spawned, a manipulator.

From his studies, manipulators were known to be smarter than other types, supposedly the smartest of the lot.

As beings whose powers were centered on manipulating darkness energy and using it for numerous purposes, they were considered dangerous.

Malakai would rather have dealt with an enhancer than a manipulator. At the very least, he had the chance to outsmart the former.

But a manipulator had spawned. Right now, he couldn’t speak, couldn’t even talk. There was no escaping this. It was all over.

The darkness did not recede, it only thickened. Malakai could hear the call of death. Moments from now, he would bleed out and turn into an ugly creature of darkness.

In this darkness, Malakai allowed his thoughts to wander. He thought about how he’d gotten to this level. The importance of his goal.

He had trained hard. He was progressing at a steady pace. A few months ago, he would never have dreamed of standing toe-to-toe against any Vein.

But not only had he defeated two of them, he had even been able to land a blow on the Fifth Vein!

It was only a matter of time before he reached the first rank in the Fresh Blood Ranking. After that, he would find out who killed his parents and have his revenge.

It was only a matter of time…

Malakai began to see familiar faces in the darkness. His beautiful mother. His imposing but soft hearted father. They were both calling to him, to join them.

Malakai wanted nothing more than to jump into their arms and remain there forever. But he had barely taken any steps before he paused. Rather than the clear and loving parents he remembered, all he saw were two people covered in blood.

Malakai glanced down at his arm, crimson blood filled every inch of it. He knew instinctively that it wasn’t his. It was theirs.

‘No.’ The thought thundered in Malakai’s head. There was no way he could leave. Not like this. Not when he hadn’t found out who killed his parents. This revenge… he owed it to them.

Malakai barely regained his mind, but the darkness did not recede. He was still dying.

So, he reached deep inside him to the only thing that could help him out of this situation, the life essence. And as though it had been waiting, it answered his call.

The first thing Malakai felt was the familiar warmth. Then, the surge of raw power. Raw vita.

It spread through his body like a flood, and Malakai felt it wash away every single pain wracking his body.

He felt his bones shifting, snapping back into place. He felt his jaw and face healing at a pace that was unnatural.

Malakai’s mind became sharper as the darkness began to recede, then vanished.

The first thing he saw was the pitch black, sleek face of the manipulator. Somehow, it was frozen meters away from him, white eyes wide open in shock.

“W-What filth are you?” Its voice sounded strained and unsure, as though it wasn’t certain what it was witnessing.

As the seconds passed, its eyes only seemed to widen further. There was no mistaking this pull, this feeling of wanting to consume.

Darkness creatures were naturally attracted to beings of vita. Of life. But this was different. It was on another level.

“No!” A realization slammed into the manipulator. “This is where it’s been hiding… in this filth! Finally! We found it at last! Haha!”

The manipulator sounded elated. It clapped its hands together, looking at Malakai with bright eyes, as though it had found the treasure of the millennia.

“You… filth,” it said, an odd certainty in its voice. “You have the life essence!”

Malakai didn’t react. Though he had expected the manipulator to be affected by the life essence, he had only hoped it wouldn’t be like the past creatures.

They had turned mindless and attacked him blindly. If the manipulator also acted like that, Malakai could forget about surviving, he would be torn into pieces.

The last thing he expected was for the life essence to be identified. Still, Malakai didn’t have the luxury of being shocked.

Instead, his entire focus was on what was going on within him. His wounds were healing fast, unnaturally fast.

However, he was running out of the little vita his body had. Soon enough, he’d be dried out and the power of the life essence would leave him.

When that happened, he’d be left on his own to deal with this monster. It would be his death.

Malakai shakily brought his arm down to the pouch on his waist, clutching an object tightly. The manipulator continued talking in exhilaration.
