Evolving My Undead Legion In A Game-Like World
Chapter 431 Strange CreatureChapter 431: Chapter 431 Strange Creature
Arianne followed Michael’s gaze and raised a brow as she noticed the peculiar owl. Her steps slowed until she came to a stop beside him, eyes studying the creature with a faint frown.
“This one is unfamiliar,” she murmured. “Master Elric.”
The old man in the green robe stepped forward at once, hands folded neatly behind his back. “Yes, my lady?”
“Where did this owl come from?” Arianne asked, her tone curious.
Elric glanced at the bird, then back to her. “Ah… that one was brought in two weeks ago. A border patrol captain donated it—said they found it after a skirmish near the Mistpine Glade. It was injured, but healed quickly. Before this, we assumed it was a common night owl at first, but its regeneration ability was clearly that of a monster.”
Arianne tilted her head. “It mutated?”
“We believe so,” Elric confirmed. “It likely ate something. We’ve been keeping it under observation since, but it hasn’t shown any aggressive tendencies. Intelligent, though. Watches everyone who comes near.”
Arianne hummed softly. “Fascinating.”
Michael’s eyes flicked to her. “May I?”
She gave him a slight smile. “You want to try taming it?”
“I want to see if it reacts.”
Michael eyed the owl again. It wasn’t large—perhaps a little bigger than a hawk.
He stepped forward slowly, not raising his hand, not making a sound. The owl’s silver gaze tracked him instantly, unblinking. For a brief moment, Michael thought he saw something shimmer in its eyes—like stars reflected in still water.
He paused a few paces away, letting the silence stretch.
Then, the owl shifted.
It didn’t take flight, but it leaned forward ever so slightly. Its head tilted in an eerie, unnatural arc, as though peering straight into his soul.
Two things drew Michael’s interest to the owl—its mutation and its appearance.
But mostly, it was the mutation.
This was the first time, aside from his undead that evolved using materials, that Michael had seen another creature with the [Mutated] suffix.
It caught his attention instantly.
“They say you’re smart. I wonder how true that is,” Michael muttered, staring at the owl.
A moment later, he activated Telepathy and connected his mind to the mutated owl.
For a heartbeat, the connection was silent.
Then, like a whisper tumbling, a voice curled through Michael’s mind—high-pitched, curious, and strangely innocent.
—“Ooooh… what’s this?”
The voice was soft, almost sing-song.
—“A two-legged one… but not like the others. No… no, no. Too cold. Scary. Hmmm… but fine…..Ahh…why do I like staying near this one.”
Michael blinked, caught off guard. The owl’s eyes glittered like twin moons, wide and unblinking.
—“You’re the prettiest one I’ve seen in days,” the voice chirped again, followed by a mental giggle.
—“And the one behind you—ooooh, she pretty too. But not for me. Not for me!”
Michael’s brows lifted slowly. Of all the things he expected, a childlike stream of rambling wasn’t on the list.
He tried speaking through the link. “Can you understand me?”
—“Understand? Understand what? Mmm Yes, yes, yes. I understand!”
“…What are you?” Michael asked instead, fascinated now.
The owl blinked.
—“I’m me, silly. That’s what I am. I used to be something else… smaller. Then I ate a shiny! Mmm. Shiny made me big.”
Michael tried steering the conversation, asking “Do you want to leave this place?”
The owl leaned back, fluffing its violet-edged feathers as if in thought.
—”Maybe. Maybe not. I like the air here. But if you give me good food, I’ll go with you! Shiny food”
Michael had no idea what the creature was saying.
But he quite liked this one.
A soft voice spoke behind him, tinged with amusement. “Do you like this one?”
Michael turned his head slightly. Arianne stood just a step behind, watching him with curious eyes.
He looked back at the owl, which had now tilted its head the other way, blinking slowly as if trying to decipher the question itself.
After a pause, Michael nodded. “Yeah… I do.”
To be honest, Michael didn’t particularly care what kind of monster he could tame.
He had never planned to become a half-hearted beast tamer.
His interest in the craft came purely from curiosity—rooted in his talent, not ambition.
Not once had he envisioned building a living army of beasts.
He was simply exploring the field, trying to understand its mechanics so that if the day came when he needed it, he wouldn’t be ignorant and helpless.
If someone told him right now there was a method to attach his soul to an inanimate object, he’d approach it with the same interest he held for beast taming.
After all, who wouldn’t want to know what an epic-grade stick looked like?
Arianne’s gaze lingered on the owl for a moment longer before she turned back to Elric.
“Is there any issue with taking this one out?” she asked.
Elric gave a thoughtful pause before shaking his head. “No, my lady. Aside from being a bit unusual, it’s not the most special creature in the enclosure. As long as you have the Duke’s permission…”
“We do,” Arianne said smoothly.
“Then there’s no problem,” Elric replied. “In fact, the Duke informed me beforehand that you and your guest would be visiting. You’re free to take any of the creatures in the outer ring.”
Michael raised a brow at that.
Arianne didn’t seem surprised.
Elric added with a small smile, “As for transporting it—just grab it.”
Michael blinked. “Grab it?”
Elric nodded. “Yes. That one’s surprisingly docile. It lets most people hold it without a fuss. Doesn’t bite. Doesn’t claw. Just stares. A lot.”
Arianne turned to Michael with an amused glint in her eye. “Well, go on then. Give it a try.”
Michael hesitated for a breath, then stepped forward, cautiously extending his hand toward the owl.
It didn’t flinch. If anything, it seemed to lean closer, eyes still glinting with eerie curiosity.
“Pretty hand,” the voice chirped in his mind again. “Warm hand. Touch?”
Michael reached out and gently rested his hand beneath the owl’s talons. With surprising ease, it stepped onto his forearm—light for its size, its claws gripping just enough for balance.
