Farming Life in Another World

Chapter 875: Interlude: How to Walk in Village Five

My name is Lucidel.

I am a demoness.

I was born in a boring village, living a dull life until I met someone who changed everything.

Yes, that person is Horlan.

I saw him working at a workshop in the neighboring village and fell for him at first sight.

I pursued him actively, and eventually, I won his heart. But convincing our parents was another story.

Neither my parents nor his approved of our relationship.

Well, Horlan is the fifth son, so he wouldn’t inherit anything. I can understand why my parents were against it.

But why would Horlan’s parents object?

I’m literally offering to marry their fifth son. I thought they’d be happy about that.

They rejected me because Horlan’s second, third, and fourth brothers were still unmarried.

And when they suggested the second son instead, I firmly refused. It had to be Horlan.

Time passed, and despite our efforts, nothing changed.

Horlan also tried his best but there’s no progress at all.

Just when I thought we’d never be able to marry, a letter arrived from Langho-anii, who had left the village.

It seems anii has found success.

He got married, bought a big house, and now that his wife is pregnant, he’s struggling to manage it all and asked if I could help.

I thought, ‘this is it’.

I took Horlan with me, and we set off for Village Five, where anii lives.

I didn’t tell my parents or Horlan’s parents anything.

They would’ve just opposed us anyway.

If they won’t stop us from leaving, they would’ve allowed us to marry in the first place.

I left behind a note, at least.

I didn’t want to stir up trouble for no reason.

My parents may not be satisfied with this, but they won’t chase me all the way to Village Five where anii is.

They might have some influence in our village, but outside of it, they hold no power.

The only thing left to worry about is whether the village chief of Village Five sees us as troublemakers……

Well, I’ll talk it over with anii once we arrive.

He’ll probably defend us, but I don’t intend to cause any problems for Village Five.

If they tell us to leave, we’ll go somewhere else.

Yes.

As long as I have Horlan, I can live anywhere.

We finally arrived at Village Five, where anii lives.

Anii is a liar!

This isn’t a village at all!

It’s a massive city!

And the gate inspection was so thorough!

Also, what’s with that teleportation gate?

I’ve never been so shocked in my life!

And then anii’s house…

He said it was big in the letter, but I never imagined it would be this huge.

What is this?

It’s not quite a noble’s mansion, but it’s far too large for a commoner’s home.

Is this the city chief’s house?

Did anii really build this?

No no, if he did, he would’ve bragged about it.

So he must have truly bought it.

A house this big.

Incredible!

I’m so excited.

He said I’d get a spacious room.

At home, I had a tiny, damp corner of a storage shed as my room…

But now, a proper room, just like I’ve always dreamed of!

And I’ll share it with Horlan.

Fufufufufufu.

No matter what kind of woman anii’s wife is, I’ll get along with her.

There’s no way I’m getting kicked out!

-0-

It’s been about ten days since I started working at anii’s house.

For now, I’m helping out his wife, but anii expects me to take on the role of a housekeeper, so I’ll do my best.

I have no complaints about the wages he gives me.

His wife is kind, and we get along well, so there shouldn’t be any trouble.

Though, I feel she could stand to be a bit more assertive considering she should be protecting her own home.

Maybe it’s because they’re still newly married.

She gets along with Horlan too, but both of them are careful not to get too close.

When they do interact, they make sure I’m with them.

Naturally.

We don’t want any strange rumors floating around.

I’m glad that Horlan is a very considerate person.

Speaking of him, Horlan is about to start working, thanks to anii’s introduction.

We’ve been relying on him a lot, but that’s why we came here.

Still, we can’t depend on him forever.

Once anii’s wife safely gives birth and their child grows up, we might get kicked out…

But this house is big enough, so maybe we’ll be fine.

No no, I can’t get too comfortable.

I need to work hard and make myself indispensable—so much so that they couldn’t possibly kick us out, even if they wanted to.

-0-

Oh, and one more thing.

Horlan and I have already reported our marriage at the church.

So, no matter what anyone says, we’re officially husband and wife now!

We did it!

After discussing with anii about leaving home without a word, he agreed to send some money to my family.

He said he’d ask them to accept that and give me their blessing.

Since I’m the only one in my family who can read and write, and I’m here now, sending a letter wouldn’t suffice.

It’ll cost extra, but anii arranged for a literate adventurer to read the letter for them.

Eh?

The adventurers are going to Horlan’s family as well?

Anii really is going above and beyond for us.

I owe him so much.

Oh, right. The lord of Village Five… No, wait, not a lord—the village chief.

I wonder if I should inform him about our situation…

I mean, if there’s even the slightest chance of causing trouble, it could lead to conflict between our village and this one.

We would become a bother, right?

We don’t want that, right?

Though the power difference is so much that it wouldn’t even be called a fight.

It will still annoy the security people.

「Whether or not it’ll cause trouble, I’ll make a report. Just to be safe.」

You know the village chief?

「Haha, I’m not that important. I’ll ask the head of the carpenter’s guild to bring it up with the village council.」

And we won’t get kicked out, will we?

「If something like this could get people kicked out, the population here would be cut in half.」

Does that suppose to make me feel better?

「Yes, just relax. Just be sure to contribute to the village and avoid causing any problems.」

Of course.

Oh, one more thing. To make sure we don’t bring any trouble to the village, I wanted to ask something.

「What is it?」

I saw a holy maiden at the church. Should we be making donations?

If so, what’s the usual amount?

「Donations? Only give what you can afford. No one will complain about the amount.」

I see.

This place is so different from our old village.

And that holy maiden was selling some new sweets—dango, I think it was called that.

「Technically, it’s sold at a shop attached to the church. Dango is really popular, so there’s usually a long line. But since you reported your marriage, they probably made an exception and sold some to you, right?」

Yeah.

It was delicious.

「Sorry that you have to save them for me or my wife.」

Oh, no need to apologize. You’ve done so much for us already.

So, what exactly is dango?

It was my first time eating it.

「I don’t really know the details.」

You don’t know?

「As long as you know it’s tasty, that’s all that matters. Are we done with questions?」

Not yet, I have more!

Ehto, there was a Sword Saint in the guards, wasn’t there?

「She’s the real deal.」

Yeah, I figured that much.

「Why is she here? Probably because she wants to be—just like you or me.」

When you say it like that, I can’t say anything back.

So, the Three Knights are the same?

「The Three Knights?」

The Silver Knight, the Bronze Knight, and the Iron Knight.

「Oh, those three. Yeah, same deal. If they ever get tired of this place, they’ll just leave.」

But I saw them at the tavern with their squires, and they looked way too comfortable to leave anytime soon.

「Well, that’s good! It means they’re not getting lonely around here.」

I also saw two grandpas who were apparently former members of the Four Heavenly Kings…

「They’re advisors to some important people in the village. They’ve got a lot of influence.」

I figured as much.

Oh, and speaking of important people, I saw the former princess of the Elven Empire here too.

「Don’t forget the ‘former’ part. And don’t call her princess or she’ll look at you with eyes full of disgust.」

What about the royal princess?

「She won’t hate being called that, but she’ll probably just ask you to call her Yuri instead.」

That’s exactly what she said!

So I thought I’d call her Yuri-sama… but then… well…

「Did something happen?」

Demon King-sama was standing right next to Yuri-sama.

I could only manage an awkward smile.

「Ah, that’s because there’s a baseball game coming up.」

Baseball? That’s the sport where you hit a ball and run, right?

They play it on that field… what’s it called, a ground?

Is Demon King-sama a fan of baseball?

「No, he’s the team manager.」

「Don’t look so shocked. I know, it’s strange, there are many people like them here but they’ve never really caused any trouble so you don’t have to be scared.」

Even so…

「This village, on certain days, you might run into the Bloodsucking Princess or the Angel of Annihilation. There are also ancient devils and ancient dragons from time to time.」

Oh…

Now it makes sense why the lord—or rather, the village chief is a legendary Nine-Tailed Fox.

「Hey now, make sure to address her Youko-sama. Also, Youko-sama is the acting village chief. You can call her acting village chief.」

U-understood.

Youko-sama, the Acting Village Chief.

So there’s an actual chief above her?

「Of course. The village chief is even more powerful than Youko-sama.」

I haven’t seen him yet.

「That’s because the village chief is, rare. But sometimes, if you’re lucky, he’ll set up a food stall at night. You might catch a glimpse of him then.」

A food stall?

「Tasty stuff.」

T-that’s not the point… ehto…is he that free to do whatever?

「Listen, little sister. Let me give you some advice.」

W-What is it?

「Unless the village chief is doing something dangerous, just watch and enjoy. If it looks fun, join in. That’s how you enjoy life in Village Five.」

So that’s the trick to living here…

Don’t overthink things.

「Exactly. Think you can manage?」

I… I’ll be fine!

My common sense has taken a bit of a hit, but I’ll figure it out.

I puff out my chest, answering confidently.

It’s only been ten days, but Village Five is starting to feel like a good place.

It’s nothing like the village I used to live in.

I’ll make sure to fit in here.

Oh, one last thing!

「What is it?」

Who’s that guy… Five-kun?

He was dancing with such sharp moves, and everyone adored him.

「…You met him?」

Eh?

Yeah, we danced together.

I even got a handshake!

「I’m so jealous!」
