Ji Shixun suddenly stopped laughing as if he was choking on his own laughter. He knew that Ji Chuan was not threatening him just for the sake of making him quiet. If he continued to tease him, Ji Chuan would really bribe the yamen officers and let Yu Cheng come out of the yamen.

A few days ago that boy came to ask for his help, he asked him to give him a hundred taels but Ji Shixun had already gotten what he wanted and no longer cared about Yu Cheng. So what if that man was locked up? So what if he was in trouble?

These things had nothing to do with Ji Shixun. After all, he got what he wanted but if Yu Cheng was to come out of the Yamen, he would not let him off so easily.

After all, the two of them were teammates but Ji Shixun betrayed Yu Cheng after his goal was achieved.

“Humph, what are you acting proud of? You will soon be married off to a small villager and toil away in the fields! Who are you showing off your might to?” Ji Shixun harrumphed angrily. However, when he thought about how Ji Chuan would stay in a small village for all his life and even his children would play in the dirt, he couldn’t help but laugh out loud in satisfaction.

This was good. Ji Chuan’s children would work in the fields with their backs bent but his children would become officials and the husbands of officials.

Just the thought alone was enough to leave Ji Shixun in a fit of laughter. He glanced at Ji Chuan proactively before turning on his feet and leaving the house, this gossip was so juicy. How could he not share with others?

Ji Chuan watched his half-brother leave and trembled in anger. Even though Yu Tong was a good woman, she was not the woman he wanted to marry but with the current situation, she was the best option for him.

All his dreams and aspirations had been turned into nothing but worthless shards by Ji Shixun.

“What are you looking at!?” Ji Chaun shouted at the servants who were watching the show. “Is there something funny going on? If so then tell me too!”

The servants scattered away and only his servant boy was left behind.

“Master, don’t bother yourself with them,” A-Ding said to his master. “These fools have no idea that Miss Tong is the general manager of the Mer bar and the mall.”

Many people in the Ji house thought that Yu Tong was a useless dirt poor woman including Ji Shixun, what they did not know was that she was the sister of the woman who was currently controlling the entire town through Magistrate Li.

The taxes alone that she paid were enough to make anyone envious.

“Who cares about them!?” Ji Chaun snarled angrily. “It’s Ji Shixun, who is making me angry. He was the one who played me like a fool and schemed against me and yet he is being rewarded. Mother doesn’t care either and only wants to marry me off.”

Ji Chuan of course did not want to marry. He had seen how his father withered away after his mother brought Ji Shixun’s daddy home. She only cared for that mer and forgot all about his daddy who was waiting for her to return to him.

His daddy waited and waited till the day he died but his mother never came to look for him, even on the day of his daddy’s funeral, Master Lan suddenly fainted —— Ji Chuan was certain that he was pretending to faint.

He was a child and he could see through his act but his mother couldn’t. She left the ceremony and did not even finish the final rites of his daddy, which was supposed to be done by either the wife of the deceased mer or his sister.

In the end, it was his aunt who finished the rite but in exchange, she took away the body of his daddy.

‘A place where my brother wasn’t even respected in death. I will not leave him there.’

Ji Chuan couldn’t even beg his aunt to leave his daddy behind as he knew that what his aunt said was right. His daddy was not even respected in death by his mother, even when his death was so fresh in Ji Chuan’s mind ——his mother had ignored him.

So how could he even hope for her to clean his grave and burn paper money for his daddy?

At least in his maternal home, he would be given the respect the dead deserved.

When A-Ding heard his master’s words, he felt sorry for his young master. Ji Chuan was right, he was the one who suffered from the day his father died and yet he was now being forced to marry against his will.

Compared to the evils that Madam Ji chose, Ji Chuan just decided to choose the lesser evil.

“Chuan’er,” Old Madam Ji who had stepped inside the courtyard that belonged to Ji Chuan, heard his words and her eyes dimmed. She walked inside the courtyard with the help of her cane and motioned for Ji Chuan to come over to where she stood.

“Grandma, you are back?” Ji Chuan climbed down from the wooden platform that was raised from the ground with the help of small pillars. “When did you return?”

“Just now,” Old Madam Ji answered as she asked her grandson to sit next to her on the small stone tea table. “The Yu family was different from what I imagined.”

“Why? Are they even worse than you thought?” Ji Chuan asked worriedly. He was scared that Yu Tong was only pretending in front of him.

“Quite the opposite. It seemed like Miss Tong comes from a family who respects mers,” Old Madam Ji told Ji Huan. “Though Miss Tong already has two mers engaged to her, we can not blame her for that —— as this marriage is not something she pushed for.”
