“Do I need you to do that, Wang Shuchun!?” The elderly woman sneered. She pointed at the woman on the street and shouted at the top of her lungs, “I know what you are playing at, you can fool my son with your flowery words but don’t even think about fooling me!”

“What do you mean by that you want to introduce new desserts in my shop? You are just trying to slowly take over this shop, aren’t you? This shop is skilled in selling traditional desserts, why would I change the filling inside of them?”

“Mother, please calm down!” A mer who was in his early twenties rushed out. His long hair was tied in a bun and he was wearing old robes that were tattered in places. “Shuchun did not mean anything wrong by asking you to change the filling inside the sweets.”

“Yao Ning! You really don’t know what’s good for you!” Madam Yao snarled at her mer son. But because he was her only child, she tried hard to keep her voice down. “She is nothing but a white-eyed wolf! I bought her because I wanted her to help you manage the shop, not to take it over under her name.”

“If you keep indulging her like that, then she would change this shop’s name to Wang from Yao! You will not even know when it happens!”

Yao Ning’s face turned red in anger and humiliation. He turned to look at his live-in wife whose face was even darker. He knew that his wife was upset, this was after all not the first time his mother had said such a thing.

Madam Yao, his mother, was the owner of the Yao Pastry shop. When he was very young, his mother was attacked by a bunch of thugs who tried to steal money from their shop.

His mother had tried to stop them and ended up getting pierced by a sword.

Because she injured herself and almost died, Madam Yao lost her ability to get pregnant or make mers pregnant.

Even though she had four husbands, only one of them could give birth to Yao Ning. And that was only because he was the official husband and had long given birth, if not Madam Yao would have been without an heir.

And as Yao Ning was a mer, he could not inherit the shop. Madam Yao was really strict when it came to blood relationships and the heirs of the family. So instead of adopting a child from a branch family, she decided to buy a wife for her son.

Maybe the heavens also took pity on her and helped her in meeting Wang Shuchun.

Wang Shuchun’s family ran into trouble, as they had no money they agreed to sell Wang Shuchun to her.

That was how Yao Ning married Wang Shuchun, their children took the Yao name as well.

Wang Shuchun was a kind woman and she didn’t treat Yao Ning harshly even though she was sold off by her family and it was Yao Ning who purchased her.

However, in the past two years, the shop’s business has gone down as more and more shops have opened in the town.

Because of this, his wife had been worrying about the bankruptcy of the Yao Pastry Shop. Thus, she came up with various fillings and asked his mother to release some new desserts and pastries in the shop.

However, with old age, his mother had turned more and more paranoid. She didn’t trust Wang Shuchun to begin with and over time, it only got even worse.

Now the situation was like this.

Even though all his wife wanted to help the shop, his mother did not believe a word that she said to her.

In fact, she firmly believed that his wife was trying to steal their shop and change its legacy.

“Mother, Shuchun is just trying to save our shop,” Yao Ning carefully said to his mother but that only fuelled the anger of his mother.

“See! See! I told you all,” Mother Yao turned to look at her husbands. “This woman was fooling and cajoling our son and neither of you paid attention to it. Look at this, now my own son is standing up for her.”

Master Yao and the three husbands were speechless.

They didn’t even know what led to this quarrel, they were cooking in the kitchen when they heard Madam Yao yell and scream.

And now Mother Yao was making a fuss about how Wang Shuchun was trying to take this shop under her name.

Father Yao blinked his eyes and then tentatively said, “Are you sure that my daughter-in-law is trying to take over this shop with its dwindling business?”

Mother Yao was speechless. She glared at her official husband and questioned, “Are you trying to be funny?”

“No. I am trying to see the logic in your complaint.”

Hearing the words of her husband, Mother Yao’s chest swelled like a bull. She wanted to say something more but Wang Shuchun had enough.

She took off the apron which she was wearing and then threw it on the street.

“Fine, since I am such a white-eyed wolf then I will leave, alright!? I will leave! Anyway, I have given birth to two daughters for your family, my work here is done!” Wang Shuchun snapped as she turned around on her feet and walked away.

“Shuchun!” Yao Ning screamed. He chased after his wife but his wrist was caught by Mother Yao and he was pulled back inside. “Why are you chasing after her? This is what she wants you to do.”

“Just leave her be, she will starve for three days and then come back home. Who does she think she is? It’s your pampering that has led to this situation! Get inside for me.”

Yao Ning did not want to go inside but he was dragged inside the house by his mother.

“Mother, leave me…let me go. My wife! If something happens to her what will I do?”

“There is no need for you to worry over that, Wang Shuchun.”

Mother Yao hated iron for not being able to turn steel, she glared at her son and said to him, “Only by showing a tough stance can you suppress that woman under your shoes!”

“Who is she? Who are you? Why do you keep lowering your head in front of her? This is why she keeps acting up. It’s because you have placed someone like her on top of your head that she is acting like this!”

“How many times do I have to tell you that you need to stand tall in front of her!”

“She is a live-in daughter-in-law! I purchased her by handing true silver taels to her parents. She is no better than a slave, so she should be the one lowering her head in front of you. Instead of you lowering your head!”

Yao Ning looked at his mother and did not know what to say to her. She was simply impossible to speak to, now he could only hope that his wife would return soon.

Once she returns, the two of them will talk about what to do regarding this matter.

Wang Shuchun on the other hand was also a bit regretful. She had nowhere to go and yet she ran away from home, that too by saying such bold words.

“Now what should I do?” Wang Shuchun covered her face with her hands and crouched down on the street. If she had known that she would end up in this situation, she would have at least taken some money to live in an inn.

But with how suspicious her mother-in-law was of her every time, she would definitely think of something extreme and refuse to let her take even a single penny.

Without a single penny where was she supposed to go now?

“Shuchun?”

A familiar voice called out from behind and Wang Shuchun raised her head. When she saw the person behind her, her eyes sparkled.

“Aunt!” Wang Shuchun rushed over to Aunt Wang and smiled sweetly at her. “Aunt, what are you doing here?”

Aunt Wang looked at her niece who was sold off by her sister and brother-in-law, with a complicated expression. She blinked her eyes and then said to Wang Shuchun, “This is something that I should ask you. What are you doing here, Shuchun? Shouldn’t you be in the shop owned by your mother-in-law?”

At the mention of the shop, Wang Shuchun’s expression turned cold. She said to her aunt, “Please don’t bring the matter to the shop with me, Aunt. I am going to go crazy because of that shop.”

Though she asked Aunt Wang to not say anything, she couldn’t help but burst out in complaints herself.

“My mother-in-law treats that shop better than me. Even though the business is running low, she is not willing to change her old way of thinking.”

“I told her that she should at least try to make small changes but my mother-in-law simply refused. She still believes that she can make a profit by selling desserts that are a decade old.”
