Kate was baffled by his honesty. Prison? She was not only sleeping with a swindler, but he was also a soon-to-be prisoner? She knew she had a type for bad boys, but up to this point, her rational mind always helped her abstain from her guilty desires.
As soon as she saw him leaving her gate, she sighed in relief. Immediately after, she felt sadness overcome her heart. Within a couple of minutes she started missing him, she lay on the bed which was still smelling like him, which only made things worse!
Right then, her doorbell rang again; she was excited for a second, thinking that he returned, but she immediately pulled her mind off it.
" He is a criminal, Kate. You can do better!" She reminded herself. She put on her angry face, marched toward the door, and opened it. She was about to yell profanities, but she found that it was not Samuel like she was expecting.
" Aunt, I was asking if Samuel came here? I saw him walking down the street." Dhia came inside; she didn't notice the angry look on Kate's face and just walked past her.
" I don't know what you are talking about; I was busy doing laundry." Kate lied and completely disregarded Samuel's existence.
" Are you alone? I don't want to embarrass you, but the neighborhood discusses you. I didn't know why, but I heard it too. You should do something about the noise."
" What the hell are you talking about?" Kate was not in the mood for conversation. She wanted to be left alone, reflecting on what happened with Samuel earlier.
" You squealing like a little girl? You know there is no soundproofing in your house, right? I can't imagine someone so 'experienced' in the field making such wild noises in the morning. Who was the guy anyway?" Dhia said with a teasing smile. She even did pretend to be a two-handed classic quotation sign to just rub it in!
It was her time to shine for all the humiliation that Kate had put her through the years. She was an innocent girl when she first came to the country, but it was Kate who would always tease her about boys.
It took a second for Kate to understand what the little brat was talking about; her face went red instantly. She completely forgot about it in her time of heat. She would often brag about sex in front of Dhia, but the truth was she only had a handful of partners over the years.
It was because she needed to be emotionally bonded before the physical act, but in this case, she had an instant connection with Samuel, which she never experienced before.
" Y-you must have m-misheard it. It must be those damn neighbors again! You know they are newly married; they must be the ones enjoying the weekend." She tried to shift the blame, but Dhia was not having it.
" I heard it loud and clear. I visited other tenants, and they were sure about it, too. I can't believe you are hiding him from me! I thought we were family. Tell me who he is?" Dhia asked again.
" No one, just some guy that I met in my bar. He won't be coming back because we had a falling out, so you don't have to worry about noises ever again!" Kate said adamantly. Dhia looked at her and knew she was serious, so she decided to drop the subject. She could tell they must have fought over something.
" Alright, I will not ask about it, but you must tell me what Samuel was doing here."
" He must have left something, I don't know and I don't care. Why do you care so much about someone like him?" Kate asked. She didn't know if Dhia was aware of his situation, but he did tell her that she knew.
Kate wanted to discourage her from hanging around such boys, she knew that it would be bad if he roped in Dhia because she was only a few people who knew about her family background. Kate was certain Samuel could never have expected Dhia to come from a wealthy background, or else he would have gone for Dhia instead of her.
" It's nothing; I wanted to keep in touch. With my graduation on the horizon, I wanted to see if I could skip the line and ask for an interview to work for him. I heard an average person like me can't get such a chance." Dhia didn't know why Kate acting strange again, but with what happened earlier in the restroom, she ignored it.
Regarding Kate hooking up with Samuel, it never crossed her mind. She was much more innocent to connect the dots. On the other hand, Kate was confused hearing her answer.
Work? Interview? What the hell was she talking about? They both stayed silent for a second before Dhia guessed what was wrong.
" Don't tell me you don't know who he is? Don't you watch the news?"
" No, I don't believe in such nonsense. Not since my favorite couple, Brad and Jennifer, broke up!"
" Oh my god! It's been years! Let it go!"
" I won't! Forget about it. Tell me, what's so special about him? Did he have a scandal with an unknown actress or something?" Kate knew Samuel was too young for such things, but knowing how he acted so smoothly, he must have swindled other women in the past.
It started to make sense how he got the money for his gambling addiction. She was making all kinds of scenarios in her heart, but what came out of Dhia's mouth was something she never expected.
" Scandal? No, wait, you could make an argument for it, but that's not important. He is Samuel Rothschild, you know, the heir of the Rothschild family. I heard it was a big deal in Britain back then; everyone talked about him. I could even remember my family in Malaysia mentioning it a few times in passing." Dhia said with deep admiration in her eyes.
As a business student, she was very familiar with Samuel's tactics and his business endeavors. It was nothing short of a miracle; whatever he touched turned to gold within a few years. He was someone who was very famous in financial circles.
No one concretely knew other than those who worked for him how much he was now worth. Still, many of his firm's actions were shadowed by financial companies, and whatever was public was made into study sessions or even a thesis for postgraduate students.
" R-r-rothschild? Fuck! That's fucking bastard, motherfu-" Kate went into a cursing fury. She wanted to say it to him directly, but she didn't let him write his number. It went on for a few minutes before she calmed herself down.
A sudden relief permeated her body, and she felt peace. She was still mad at him for pulling her leg, but she was more happy to know it was a terrible joke but nonetheless a joke!
