I have Immortality In The Cultivation World
Chapter 429: Seeking Immortality and the Path to EnlightenmentThe Heavenly Court has governed Dongsheng Divine Continent for a thousand years; the laws of Heaven are thoroughly implemented throughout the Cultivation World.
Monks who once rebelled against the laws of Heaven have either squeezed into the Heavenly Court to become officials or died of old age, their lifespans exhausted, reborn in the cycle of reincarnation.
Remaining monks were born under Heavenly Court’s rule, regarding the laws of Heaven as the standard guiding principles, their every word and deed aligned with the laws of Heaven.
As such, monks no longer revealed Divine Skills amongst ordinary folks. After generations passed, tales of immortals and ghosts became nothing more than age-old legends, with many people never encountering them in their lifetimes.
Soldiers guarding the city gates were just such people, terrified and their expressions changing drastically upon seeing a monkey speaking like a human.
“Where did this strange monkey come from?”
“Could it be some hairy freak of a person?”
“I’ve heard from my great-grandfather that there are mountain spirits and wild men deep in the forests, could it be something like that?”
The soldiers at the gate drew their swords en masse, with archers on the city walls nocking arrows, and the duty officer at the gate shouted loudly.
“Monster, go back where you came from, do not come any closer!”The Monkey King, used to freedom in the mountains, would not give up easily after finding a city wall and took a few steps forward, saying, “I’m not a monster, I just wanted to ask…”
Swish, swish, swish!
Over a dozen arrows shot toward him, densely sticking into the Monkey King’s body.
The Monkey King nonchalantly pulled out the arrows, two of which passed through his skull, their removal spraying red and white matter that quickly healed and restored as he continued to inquire.
“Do you know where immortals can be found?”
“Monster! It must be a monster! Quickly close the city gate…”
The officer shouted repeatedly, and the soldiers hustled back into the city, dead-bolting the gate shut.
Seeing this, the Monkey King realized he was not welcome, offered a few words in his defense but faced another relentless volley of arrows, and left reluctantly.
“Never mind, I will ask elsewhere.”
Wandering for half a month, he came upon a village.
The Monkey King quietly entered but soon found himself being chased by a group of black and yellow dogs.
Villagers, seeing the Monkey King’s appearance, mistook him for a monster that stole children, and chased him with farm tools for miles before turning back. ṞãNօBÊŞ
After drifting for a few more years, during which he was killed over a dozen times, the Monkey King’s indestructible body brought him back to life. Traveling thousands of miles, he gained much insight.
That day,
The Monkey King was scurrying down the mountain with a hundred soldiers in hot pursuit, intent on capturing him to coat him in gold lacquer as an auspicious tribute to the emperor.
In his panic, he found himself at the edge of a cliff, leaped off, and crashed into the water below, his body smashing into a pulp.
Moments later, he was whole again.
Completely discouraged from interacting with humans, the Monkey King let the current sweep him away, determined to seek immortals deep in the mountains.
“If humans don’t like me, then I’ll seek out demons.”
Following the currents, small rivers flowed into bigger ones, which in turn flowed into a vast waterway.
After drifting tens of thousands of miles, he neared Rao Mountain and entered Shang Shui, where he saw a towering stele rising from the ground.
The stele, twenty or thirty zhang high and cast from green stone, made people seem like ants beneath it.
Having learned human script in the mountains, the Monkey King read every word aloud: “The Heavenly Emperor, hearing of a great drought in the human world, was moved by compassion and decreed to Shang Shui Dragon Palace to divert the waterway by a thousand miles…”
The whole text praised the Heavenly Emperor’s mercy, and also described the dragon race’s Divine Skills, how the vast Shang Shui was diverted overnight.
“The Heavenly Emperor, could it be the ruler of the Heavenly Court from the legends?”
The Monkey King scratched his head in puzzlement, recalling his years wandering outside, seeing all humans worshipping the Heavenly Court Righteous Gods, praying to the God of Wealth for riches, to the deity of love for a wife, and to the Great Age God when luck was down.
He asked elderly and nearly blind people why they worshipped the Righteous Gods and if there really was a Heavenly Court.
The elderly told him they had worshipped the Righteous Gods since their own grandfathers’ times, as natural as eating when hungry and drinking water when thirsty, without questioning why.
Now, seeing the sky-scraping stele, the Monkey King speculated that perhaps the Heavenly Court truly existed.
“The Heavenly Court is elusive, but this Shang Shui Dragon Palace must be in this river!”
The Monkey King, fearless of death, weighed himself down with a few stones and sank to the riverbed, following the current downstream.
There were quite a few shrimp soldiers and crab generals under the Dragon Palace in the river. The Monkey King walked for half a month and met a vicious-looking patrolling demon, to whom he promptly greeted.
“Brother, may I know where the Dragon Palace is?”
The demon asked, “Why do you seek the Dragon Palace?”
The Monkey King replied, “I wish to join the Dragon Palace to practice the methods for eternal life.”
“You shameless monkey demon, the Dragon Palace is no place for a lowly demon of the wilderness.”
The demon sneered, looking down at him: “You managed to consume Spirit Grass by chance and gained intelligence. You should contently roam the mountains; don’t even dream of leaping over the Dragon Gate. The Immortal Register of the Dragon Palace isn’t for the likes of you!”
The Monkey King asked, “What is this Immortal Register?”
The demon disdainfully said, “Not knowing even the Immortal Register, truly you’re but a rootless wild demon.”
Having mingled for a few years, the Monkey King learned to lay aside his pride and flattered the demon sufficiently to gain some understanding of a corner of the Cultivation World.
“To seek immortality and inquire about the path, one must first be listed in the Immortal Register. To enter the Immortal Register, one must go to the academy… However, to study at the academy, one must have a recommendation from monks listed in the Immortal Register; otherwise, one will be rejected at the door?”
According to the demon, this is the essential path for those seeking to learn the Immortal Law, as no one dares to transmit it otherwise.
Even if one is lucky enough to inherit knowledge from a sage, without a proper Immortal Register listing, such practices are deemed as illicit by the Heavenly Court, giving them the right to arrest and interrogate in the heavenly prisons.
“I don’t even know anyone; where can I find a recommendation?”
The Monkey King implored the demon for several days, learning that human clans, secular dynasties, and prominent demon families all had the authority to recommend, and then asked, “Big brother demon, how did you obtain the Immortal Register?”
The demon shook his head and said, “What Immortal Register? I’m merely attached to the Dragon Palace as a servant, tasked with patrolling the nearby hundred-mile stretch of river, never allowed out of Shang Shui, thus spared from the Heavenly Court’s inspections!”
The Monkey King was at a loss; this path was a dead end.
To learn the Wonderful Method of immortality and then return to Monkey Mountain to teach his kin, he could not become a servant or slave, and as a servant, he would not be able to learn the Wonderful Method.
