Chapter 1000: 1000 Is Gold

Once everyone was gathered for lunch in the crowded spire restaurant, Wolfe stood to address the crowd.

“Now, before we start, is there anyone who believes this opportunity is not for them, and would like to remove themselves from consideration? It is not too late to bring in a replacement from the backup lists that your leadership has prepared.” Wolfe asked.

Every one of the thirty people shortlisted for the positions as Pentacle Members came from families who were strongly in support of this opportunity, and going home to tell them that you backed out on the first day voluntarily, without any pressure, would be completely unacceptable.

At first, some had thought that the Dark Fae might be the ones to withdraw, as they weren’t known for their sociable natures, but they all seemed to have enjoyed their mornings, and the Fae had been careful not to pick anything like a Mimic or Boggart, who enjoyed messing with people much more than they feared consequences.

To some species, even the threat of death was not enough to stop them from going for the cruellest of pranks, and that alone would make them unsuitable for this position, but in the past the Dark Fae had sent them anyhow, just to troll those who had falsely reached out to them, with no intention of actually listening to anything the Dark Fae suggested.

But this place was different. Many of the witches still smelled like dark magic, so the Fae all knew that they weren’t afraid to use forbidden spells and curses when it was necessary, and the Magi didn’t seem to see a difference between the Fae, and he was as likely to say hello to the Selkie or the Wendigo as he was to the Elves and the Faeries.

In fact, he was the only one that they had seen say hello to the Wendigo, but that could be because it preferred to hide from people most of the time, and wasn’t part of the selection.

Of course, it was also carnivorous, and only the [Kind Intentions] spell was preventing it from eating people in the Fae Forest, which had caused it no end of grief. It could eat animals, but they were a poor substitute, and it was seriously considering returning to its homeland, even though it had found a strange man who wasn’t afraid of it at all.

“Well, if everyone is committed to their choice to come here, let’s move on to the next grouping. Those of you who are in Group B, you will match with one number up from where you were. Group C, you will match with one number down from where you were.

We will continue this pattern until you have all been vetted by all of the existing pentacle members.” Wolfe explained.

One of the Fae raised her hand. “Won’t that lead to us ending up with the same partner but a different witch at some point?”

Wolfe nodded. “I believe so, yes. But that is also a good experience, as you will be familiar with your partner, and there will be a different Pentacle Member there, with a different view on your qualifications.”

That sounded good to the ones who didn’t think they made a good impression, and the few who knew that the one particular person they were partnered with drove them insane. Given a few days to prepare, they were certain they could make themselves look better in front of the next group.

Wolfe’s next pairing was Khalifa and a girl named Beth, who looked vaguely terrified of all the attention on her, which was triggering the Huntress’ instincts to tease her.

“This afternoon is a simple schedule, just a few trade meetings, and I will let the both of you act as advisors, so if you have input, feel free to give it.” Wolfe explained.

Khalifa nodded, then gently poked Beth in the side. “Hear that? Feel free to speak up. If you don’t like to speak loudly, we can get a spotlight to shine on you so that everyone knows you have an idea.”

Beth silently glared at the Elf for calling her out like that, but Wolfe could see her steeling her resolve to speak clearly, so that the blonde huntress didn’t have more opportunities to pick on her.

Behind them, Risa was accompanied by a Rock Troll who was nearly her height and heavily built, and an absolutely tiny human girl. Not a young child, as her face said she was somewhere around sixteen, but not more than 140cm tall. Standing beside the two 250cm tall powerhouses, the human girl really did look out of place, but the Rock Troll appeared to be having the time of her life.

Risa was on bodyguard duty for Wolfe this afternoon, and while he had given her permission to go do other things so she could see what the candidates were like, she had opted to be here for the meetings and wait in the back.

“Introducing the Emissary from the Patriarchate of Corgosia, and his advisors.” Risa’s voice boomed as the door began to open as the other party arrived.

Corgosia was a coastal nation directly north of Forest Grove, and one of the more populated mixed nations. They were primarily human, but did have witches, though not enough of them to sustain their needs, as they were still affected by the bloodline curse and mostly stuck at Rank One. The increased mana levels had allowed a few to advance, but not nearly to the extent that most of the southern nations had experienced with Wolfe creating Cleansing Arrays for their cities.

They had already begun to accept the new currency, and this meeting was intended to negotiate the first steps of a full changeover, as well as a trade deal.

“Emissary Euros, it is a pleasure to meet you. I am Wolfe Noxus. Please have a seat. These will be my advisor Candidates for the afternoon, Khalifa and Beth.” Wolfe greeted the group.

“I was informed that you are holding auditions for more Advisors. The Lady Alice from your Second Pentacle was in our nation last week to hear our appeal, and she did look somewhat overworked.” Euros, a completely shaved bald man with dusky golden skin replied with a polite smile.

“Yes, it is our hope that these additions will help ease the strain on our advisors. But, down to business, I believe that you had a proposal for me.” Wolfe agreed.
