Chapter 1037: 1037 Slacking
Now that Wolfe had ten Candidates with him for the day, he needed to make an actual day out of his impulsive actions.
The Witches and Demons of the other Pentacles had all made themselves busy around town, taking care of some aspect of the city’s upkeep, as if they were a governing council or Coven. It was working wonderfully, but it also meant that these last ten didn’t have a particular purpose in the city.
Once they were trained, there would be some shuffling, but it would leave most of the ten dedicated to foreign relations and large events.
So, that was what he decided to task them with: his workload for the day.
“Alright, once we’re in the offices beneath the spire, I am going to give each of you one complaint or suggestion. I want you to make a decision on it, and then explain to me why you chose that course of action.” Wolfe explained.
“That’s the task? To be customer service?” Annette, the Faerie asked curiously.
“Yep. You all will be working with foreign governments, businesses, village leaders within the Alliance, and basically, anyone from outside the city. So, you will have to deal with plenty of requests and complaints once you are all trained.
So, we will start it now, with me allowing you input into decisions on what is happening during the Festival. If I don’t have any objections, I will implement your suggestions, so take this seriously, as it is going to affect the very real people above us.” Wolfe explained.
That changed some expressions. By the standards of their species, these Candidates were mostly still teens, not quite young adults. There were a few older ones among them, like Khalifa and Drazzit, who had already earned titles among their people, but mostly they had sent those young enough to not be pulled away from other obligations.
They made their way downstairs, and Wolfe passed out the first batch of papers.
It was only seconds later when a frustrated sigh came from Nola, a white haired Nymph, who had chosen what looked like a wedding dress with a short skirt for the day’s fashion.
“Can the answer just be bin it and move on? Seriously, this one is ridiculous. The waffle cone vendor wants the ice cream stall three rows over from him shut down, as they’re stealing his business.” She demanded.
“That’s a valid answer. Now, give me a little justification as for why he’s wrong to make the demand. He will want an answer, even if it’s a short one.” Wolfe agreed.
“The standard for matching businesses is one row apart, so that shoppers don’t come across multiple identical shops in the same pass through the market. This is far beyond that, no matter which direction you go. And that doesn’t even factor in that his signature product is the waffle cones, which aren’t all filled with ice cream, while the other sells custom ice cream flavours.” She explained.
“Wonderful. Now, write that down and make a copy for the record. There is a witch spell there on the desk to duplicate the document.
Put the completed document in the pile, and take another.” Wolfe replied.
Most of the complaints were like that. Frivolous, or personal conflicts between shopkeepers who wanted their neighbour evicted. That was why they needed written answers because they wouldn’t stop sending complaints if they didn’t receive one.
But after a few minutes, Wolfe noticed that one of the humans, Jessica, was deep in thought.
“How’s the problem going?” Wolfe asked.
“I’m not sure that I’m qualified for this one. It’s a request from the forge district to be allowed to establish a secondary location near the airport so that they can more easily test inventions that require larger spaces to activate.
That seems like the sort of thing that should be put by the mechanics and the airport people, since it seems to involve projectiles and technology, but I don’t have any idea of what the policies are for that.”
Wolfe hadn’t been expecting there to be a serious question among all of the daily reports that got sent to him. But it looked like there was, and he couldn’t expect anyone from the new group to have a real answer to that.
“Do you see a reason not to?” Wolfe asked.
“Just the safety concerns. Perhaps by the airport isn’t the best spot?” She replied.
“That’s good enough. I will take a look at the details and pass it on. We’re always getting requests for new spaces, but this one sounds like it has merits. But as we have the Fae with us as well, can anyone tell me why they requested a spot next to the airport?” Wolfe directed his last question at the group.
Monika and the two Elves both burst into laughter, while Annette and Nola took a few more seconds to realize it.
Monika was the first to speak. “The Forge District is almost all Dwarves. We prefer to live inside the mountains. It’s not that they need to be near the airport, it’s that the airport is the only portion of the territory that is both connected by transport tunnels and in the mountains.
But if I recall correctly, that mountain is claimed, so right next to the airport isn’t a viable option, even without the air traffic concerns. The next mountain over would give them the space they need, and we could establish a no-fly zone around their testing area, in case of artillery or blasts coming out of the mountain.”
“And your suggestion?” Wolfe asked.
Monika paused, thinking of the best answer, but Drazzit just shrugged. “Why don’t we make them dig a whole new tunnel to the next mountain and build a forge complex there? You can do the enchanting afterwards, but Dwarves love digging tunnels. The Dark Iron Clan dug one all the way from their Capital to ours in Faerie, and that’s over ten thousand kilometres.”
