Chapter 1102: 1102 Location Chosen

After much discussion, the Pentacles seemed to be coming to a decision. Ella seemed to have the best solution.

“You know, there is no reason we can’t claim both. It is natural for a Palace to have a nearby village, both to supply it and for visitors.

If we build the Royal Palace in the east, we can make a traditional castle for the sun to rise over, and still have our vineyards and a mountain city built on the western slopes. We can connect them underground at either end of the valley, crossing under the river instead of the lake, so if there is a disaster we don’t accidentally drain the lake.

Then we will get the added benefit of getting to look over a beautiful village from the Palace, and the servants families could stay nearby.”

Wolfe nodded. “Does anyone have an objection to that? I know we just finished moving away from a city so that we wouldn’t disturb the residents, but it is three kilometres from the Palace to the other mountain. That should be far enough that we can relax our auras.

Fae, Demons, what do you think? Is that far enough for us to fully relax without scaring the residents?”

Risa nodded. “One kilometre from the Palace is normally far enough that the aura of an angry Demon King doesn’t bother the locals. We put the main villages two kilometres from the palace, just in case. That’s how it was in Queen Elizabeth’s Kingdom as well.”

Wolfe thought about that. He had flown the route every morning with Rail on their way to the palace for work, but he had never considered that there was a real reason for it other than security.

“Who will we be inviting to the village?” Drazzit inquired. Knowing who would be allowed to live there was an important part of determining how they would design it.

Annette, the Faerie, circled the dark Elf’s head.

“I say just important people. Ones with a contract to work for the Palace. The winemakers, farmers, Dwarven Ale smiths, armourers, artificers, and craftsmen to maintain the area. Add some cleaning staff and guest quarters to that, and it’s all we need to host visitors.

Forest Grove is the main attraction, the jewel of the Frozen Wastes, and we don’t want to just make a whole other city that’s going to expand into the valley and crowd everyone out again.

But we also don’t want the entire staff to have to live under the crushing aura of the Royals only a few metres away.

Only some Fae like it underground, most of us like the surface, and I know many Demons are the same, so I say the west side should be staff accommodation.” She insisted.

Wolfe looked to the others for confirmation.

Millie and Chloe, the twin Bloodletters of the bodyguard team, just shrugged. “We can fly, so putting them three kilometres away across a valley is actually better for us. The city will be almost vertical, so everyone would have a similar flight time to the Palace gates.

We should consider ground access as well, though. How will people without wings get to the lake? Surely, we’re not going to just leave a portal open all the time? That’s a security nightmare.”

Wolfe gestured to a flat spot in the valley.

“Pilot, can you set us down there? I think we need some space to make a proper blueprint spell.”

The meadow smelled like wildflowers and clean water, making all the Fae sigh as they stepped out and the helicopter’s blades spun slowly to a stop.

“This is a good spot.” Annette’s happy voice rang through the group as she zipped around the clearing.

Wolfe began forming a spell to create a projection of the valley.

“Alright, this is what we have here now. I’m thinking that we can make bridges here and here, to let people walk around the lake. We can make the tunnels under the rivers when we decide what will be built, but I don’t want a basement tunnel access to the Palace if we can avoid it. That would just lead to fighting on two fronts if there was a breach.” Wolfe suggested.

“So, loop the tunnel? Or have it come up to the surface and have everyone enter through the front gates? You know how people hate to get rained on, and three kilometres is close enough that most Demons and Fae would just jog it.”

That led to another round of discussions, and a number of revisions that would create a basement level entrance that would also be safe from intrusion, if someone should attack through the civilian side of the castle.

The first thought of most was to just use spells, but Null Stone was a thing, and Wolfe was well aware that there were still people in the world willing to use Null Stone coated soldiers as shock troops to break barriers, even though they knew the level of radiation poisoning they would suffer if they survived.

Once they had that sorted out, with a number of sliding alloy drop doors that weighed dozens of tonnes and mechanically latched in place as well as magically, everyone was assured that they could indeed seal the castle’s lower levels against intrusion.

“Alright, now that we have the routes between the two locations designed, why don’t we pick teams, and we can do the design of the castle and the staff accommodations?” Wolfe suggested.

There were plenty of people to do the designs, and the blueprint projection that he was using could be operated the same way that the whiteboard spell was, where they could draw their ideas right on it as if they were creating an inscription, but without charging it to activate the spell.

The teams split by who wanted to create which style. Nola, Cassie, and most of the humans went with Wolfe to the East, along with all the Demons. The remainder of the Pentacle members went to the west, to design various living spaces, while the castle team made the functional parts of the castle and focused on the security of the Pentacle members.

In comparison, making homes for the staff was incredibly easy to do. They didn’t even need to work out the spacings for high-level practice areas so that they didn’t interfere with each other.
