Chapter 1108: 1108 Head Butler
The first two through were a pair of middle-aged men, one from Sylvan Coven, and one from King Petros’ capital.
“Good afternoon gentlemen. While we wait for the Head Maid candidates to arrive, we might as well begin your interview. I presume you both know who I am?”
Both men bowed politely, though in different fashions. One was the formal bow of the Fallen Empire, with a hand at the waist and on one knee, while the other was the formal bow of the Witch covens, with hands at the sides and bent horizontally.
That reminded Wolfe that they didn’t have anything resembling a unified formal code for such interactions. He had checked in his records, and the Magi just let everyone do what they wanted. If it was customary at your home, or even if you just thought it would be cool, and it looked properly formal and polite, they didn’t care.
It might cause some chaos with the staff, but they could sort that out later.
Perhaps they could let the head of a division set the tradition, and then they would be able to tell what section someone worked in by the way they greeted the Pentacle members. That would save them some confusion when new staff was hired.
“Your Majesty, I was in training under Saint Petros’ Butler before he advanced. I have fifteen years of service as a junior Butler, as well as a diverse experience with off world cultures.” The man to Wolfe’s left began.
Wolfe nodded and looked to the other man.
“King Noxus, I was to be betrothed to the next Coven Leader of the Sylvan Coven, but when the plans were changed and the Lady Priya took over I was moved to the position of Priya Family’s Butler in training.
I have been training for thirty years to become the head of the diplomatic staff for the Sylvan Fortress City, and I have developed a strong rapport with a number of the Guardians, as well as the Ocean Fae.”
A few of the witches laughed, and Wolfe smiled.
“And what is your relation to the current Lady Priya?” He asked.
“She is my half sister, Your Majesty.”
Even the other butler had to smile at that. Talk about having your life plans shattered. He had been groomed his whole life to become the arranged husband to a Coven Leader, and then in the course of a year, everything changed, and his little half sister took the position.
It would have been unthinkable before, but she was the most influential Saint in Sylvan City, as the others had either been from small families, or had disowned their families before the war ended.
“That is unfortunate on your part. What skills do you have with household management?” Wolfe asked.
He took out a binder and placed it on a side table. “I took the liberty of preparing a summary report on my scheduling logs and household reports for the last year, to be reviewed at your leisure.”
Wolfe nodded as Ella flipped through the report, and turned to the other man. “And what is your experience with international relations?”
It was the counterpoint to each other’s strengths.
“Part of my training duties was to accompany foreign visitors on their trips to the Capital. I set schedules for them, arranged meetings between them and local Nobles, as well as arranged business between local Nobles and the guests under my care.
I have been responsible for over a hundred such cases, and as a result, I have built a sizable series of connections within the Fallen Empire.”
He also presented a notebook, which Cassie picked up to thumb through and compare to the one Ella was reading.
“If you will kindly give us a moment, the ladies applying for Head Maid will be arriving soon.”
Both men bowed and stepped back from the portals so they weren’t in the way. From what Wolfe could tell, they both had strengths and weaknesses for the role. One was a better trained Butler, but less familiar with the world and the sorts of people he would be dealing with. The other had that experience with the Fae and Demons, as well as the other nations, but he had only recently been reassigned as a Butler, and he had grown up expecting a much higher rank.
That could lead to attitude problems later, as a Butler was always going to be below the guests, and Wolfe couldn’t tell if he was going to be able to easily accept that.
The decision was made in Wolfe’s mind when the first Head Maid candidates arrived.
The Priya Coven candidate remained stiff backed and in position as would be normal for a dignitary, while the other man seemed to melt into the background, and took the two binders from Cassie and Ella to place them on the side table, so they could greet the new arrivals with empty hands.
That instinct took years to train, and if you didn’t have it at the start, you couldn’t be expected to lead all the other Butlers. Not that the other man wasn’t likely qualified for the Butler position, but he wasn’t trained to the level that could lead the others yet.
It seemed that the Coven had misunderstood the criteria Wolfe would be using, and sent the best connected personal assistant, and not the best trained butler. He would make an excellent personal assistant, though.
Wolfe made a note to ask Priya if she wanted to hire her half brother for the job, so she could spend more time here and less in the Coven.
The Head Maid candidates came towards the portals, and Wolfe extended his senses into their homes. It was a bit invasive, but he could learn a lot that way.
For example, one of them was working as a Nanny right now, and she spent most of a minute tenderly saying goodbye to a boy who was near ten years of age, reminding him to behave for his Governess, and to listen to his parents.
Even if she didn’t get a nod for head maid, Wolfe would put her in the running for the position of Nanny to the kids. There were so many jobs to fill that simply starting with the most qualified team leaders was giving them good candidates for other jobs in the castle.
