Chapter 1137: 1137 Throne
It had been three months since the coronation, and today was the first of Wolfe’s new monthly open hearing days.
The concerns of the Guardians might not always be the concerns of the people, so on the weekend that was exactly opposite the monthly festival, he would be opening a portal to Forest Grove, and everyone from around the world who had an issue or proposal to bring before him would be able to come and speak for the next three days.
Everyone in the castle was in business mode, and they had even called back some of their soldiers from emergency response duties to work as security and tour guides in the valley.
The portal from Forest Grove opened at the bottom of the mountain, and there were buses going back and forth, but people were sure to wander.
“Are we sure that this schedule is going to work? There isn’t a lot of time for meals during the hearings, and they go from dawn to dusk.” Ella pointed out, cradling her rapidly growing belly as she got to her feet.
It had long since become obvious that the Dark Elven King’s prophecy about twins was about this set of children, as she was growing at an alarming rate even compared to Cassie.
“You don’t have to sit with me all day. We can cycle through the advisors. I am the only one who needs to live with the whole schedule. But it seemed like the fairest way. We can’t have them waiting for hours while we eat and take a break from their complaints.
Well, I suppose I could. But for the first round, it’s better to hear how things are working.
There have been countless changes recently, and some of them might not be working for the people as well as they were intended to.” Wolfe reminded her.
Ella sighed as she cast an armour spell to make herself a new dress. Getting fitted for maternity clothes was a giant hassle, and it just made her feel like a blimp every time she didn’t fit into her clothes, so she had taken to just making a new dress every morning then dismissing it in the evening or destroying it if she made it of regular cloth.
Cassie was doing nearly the same thing, but with less vengeance. She had adopted a simpler system. She had taken a young Witch as a handmaid from among the staff. When the handmaid thought that the dress might not fit, she didn’t bring it out again and suggested that Cassie could use a style update for the week.
That kept Cassie happy, and gave them a weekly activity to do together.
This week, Cassie had gone for a shimmering golden gown with pearl accents and gold lace sleeves.
It was lovely and regal, suitable to wear on the throne, and the design highlighted her pregnancy for all to see.
The ladies were still under six months into their pregnancy, by their best estimation, but they were already getting sick of the whole process, and ready to just give birth and be done with it.
But after breakfast they still followed Wolfe to the throne room, which would essentially leave them stuck there until lunch, unless they excused themselves early.
Wolfe sat on the throne while the guards lined the walls of the room, and the line of supplicants came to make their appeal.
That was a strange thought. They weren’t just people asking for a favour, they were supplicants, asking for justice from the King.
It was a very different sort of sensation, and he had an actual responsibility to the people before him now.
That didn’t mean that they were going to have reasonable, or even sane, requests. Just that he had a duty to listen to them.
Once the guards were in place, Guardians who had no requests, along with a few hundred others who were hoping that Wolfe might call on them to help with a problem, filed into the room.
The guards lined up in their final positions, and the herald, a Bloodletter Demon woman with Ivory white skin, thumped her halberd’s butt on the floor.
“The hearings will now begin. Introducing Madam Maeve Jillsdotter from the Mist Continent with the first request.”
Wolfe didn’t know how they had been arranged, but the first speaker was a Rank Three Witch, and she had brought two different plants with her.
“Your highness. With me, I have two plants, one standard breed and one hybrid developed in my garden. I have come seeking finance to expand and distribute these higher yield food crops to the people.” She began.
Wolfe turned to Nimue. “My young advisor here will take a look at your hybrid in the coming days. Please leave any data you have gathered for her to examine and present to interested financiers.”
He wasn’t going to just throw business startup money at people. But if someone was willing to work with her, there was always a market for new food crops.
The Witch bowed, and the guards took the plants and notes from her to place in a back room for Nimue to look over. As a half Dryad, she would have the best insights.
The line moved on with a number of general complaints about how a change had negatively affected them. All of the complaints were things that the local leaders had refused to make changes for, so the people had come here to seek redress.
Most of the refusals had an excellent reason, and some of them Wolfe could instantly dismiss. Like the man complaining that new environmental rules preventing the dumping of waste in rivers were going to bankrupt him.
Changes were being made for a reason, and some adaptation was needed. But Wolfe suspected that a lot of the morning complaints were based on the loss of influence among the officials that they used to bribe to get exceptions to the rules.
With the Witches looking over the shoulder of the Guardians, there was a lot less corruption than there used to be. Even when compared to the rate that it had been declining since the Guardians arrived.
