Chapter 1141: 1141 Picnic
It was no real secret what the Magi and the Nymph had been up to, as she was glowing with power when she came down from that tower that morning to join the day’s activities.
It was a simple schedule, as the human pentacle had magic classes in the morning to finish their training, while the others caught up on whatever work they had taken on.
Then after lunch, there was an inspection of the lake in the valley scheduled.
That meant a picnic, as they weren’t going to go down to the lake and cast a couple of spells to clean up any trash that might have been left by the guests at the party, then leave.
No, they would remain there for most of the afternoon, snacking and enjoying the sunshine.
They had been working entirely too much lately, and everyone was ready for a break. It was also a relief for the staff. There would be nobody in the castle to make a mess and nobody supervising them, so they could just slack off all day, even if it wasn’t their weekend.
The Head Maid would not approve of that tactic, but the castle was kept spotless, and most of the cleaning staff were certain that they were doing the work at least twice as often as necessary.
For some of the rooms, the protective wards weren’t even letting dust settle between visits, so the only thing that had entered the suite was the maids themselves, there to dust unnecessarily and change the linens for freshly washed sets.
If they could convince her that the rooms needed an actual stasis spell, the linens wouldn’t get that stale and unused smell between visits, so they wouldn’t have to do them all every two weeks, just to be ready in case of an influx of visitors.
They only had five visitors right now, from a Magi Clan in the Incubus King’s empire.
They had come to look for a spell in the library that Wolfe and the Witches had been duplicating in their spare time. They had brought what they could with them when they fled, but the answer to their issue was not there, so they were hoping that the Noxus Castle had something.
If that didn’t work, they would have to get Wolfe to go to the Noxus Family home and search the Library there.
They likely could have gone straight there, as Vlad would appreciate having someone more than one other vampire to talk to, but what they needed was such an obscure bit of lore that it was unlikely to be referenced directly, and they needed to search through adjacent topics for any mention of it.
Doing that with the curated selection here was easier than with the tens of millions of records in the main home.
The staff had approached them to see if they were interested in the outing, but the two older men that they had sent were happy to just sit in the library, even if it meant that they were in the same chair for months.
That was just how the old Magi were.
Today, they would be taking the bus down the mountain, both for a change of scenery, and so that their two heavily pregnant members didn’t need to stand for extended periods while they were flying.
That irritated them more than they were willing to admit, but it was the smell of food filling the bus from the baskets that the staff were holding that made the real difference.
There was definitely some sort of spiced cake in there, and everyone could smell it.
“Alright, we’re here. It’s only twenty metres to the picnic spot.” Wolfe announced as the driver pulled the bus into the parking area alongside the road.
Everyone headed out and realized that while there were no other vehicles, there were plenty of other people here.
The workers and artisans from the other side of the valley were out in force, playing in the water.
Or, their kids were, but there were a few dozen parents with them.
The maids began to set up the picnic blankest for the two dozen members of the Pentacles off to one side, and within seconds, there was a small boy dripping water with his hand out, ready to drag Nimue to the lake to play.
“We need one more for water volleyball.” He insisted.
Nimue cheered and quickly stripped out of her dress, revealing her swimsuit. She was prepared for all eventualities today, and she had been planning to go swimming.
The Witches began their spells to clean up the garbage and move it to the bins for proper disposal, but there was nothing left, other than what was around the spots that were occupied.
Either the locals had already cleaned everything, or the guests had been exceptionally clean.
Nobody had been expecting that, and most of the reason they had planned this picnic was to make sure the lake was clean enough for the Fae and others to be comfortable relaxing here.
Most of them looked at the water with trepidation. It was crystal clear, but it was also a mountain spring, and that water had to be positively frigid, especially this late in the year. The valley was a protected one, but it was winter already, and a bit of geothermal heat under the lake wouldn’t do much more than keep it liquid and keep the valley’s temperature moderate.
Once you were out of the valley, and the protective spells that had been placed all over it, winter in the mountains was in full force, with deep snows and biting cold. But here, it was still pleasant next to the lake, while the Castle had a temperature control spell cast over it by the Fae to keep themselves comfortable all year.
The baskets were opened, and the Pentacle members sighed in joy as they saw the tubs full of spiced cake. That was what they had been waiting all morning for.
