Chapter 1148: 1148 Guests
They had just sent out the messages to the security specialists in the Royal Guard, who would send undercover agents to the suspicious markets, when a chiming noise indicated that someone wanted to open a portal directly into Wolfe’s office.
That was unusual. Normally, visitors would come to the main platform. But the energy through this portal didn’t feel like their world, which meant that whoever it was had the power to get around the trial trap and contact them directly.
Wolfe focused through the small portal and established a stable portal to the sitting room next door.
A tip of his head had Priya following him, prepared for nearly anything from a world that they didn’t recognize.
The air coming through the portal smelled like gunpowder and scorched flesh, the scent of modern battlefields everywhere.
But the only one that came through was a small woman with silver skin and white wings.
She waved her hand, and Wolfe’s portal destabilized behind her.
“Asylum?” She gasped as she collapsed on the floor.
“Of course. But first we need to know what is going on in the world you came from. If you’re responsible for a genocide or something truly horrible, Magi laws wouldn’t allow us to keep you safe after you have healed.” Wolfe explained.
Priya healed the woman, who turned to look at her in shock.
“The Witches are here? It’s a miracle.” She whispered.
“Not really a miracle to us. The witches are from here. In fact, both Witches and Magi are native to this world. Can you tell us what happened? I know the smell of gunpowder and burnt flesh.” Wolfe repeated.
“Humans, naturally. They’re like the cockroaches of the universe. No offence if you get along with the ones here. They discovered nuclear fission, and immediately began using it to wipe out every other species they encountered.
I felt mixed magical energy from this spot when I fled the bombardment of my city.
From what I can tell, someone opened a portal from our world to yours within the last year, and the lingering energy was in the building when it was destroyed.”
Wolfe focused on the exhausted refugee. The energy of her world was similar to that in one of his cores, but more generic, like he would expect from his world or the worlds of the Fallen Empire.
“Is your world a bridge between planes? Or are there people from other planes there?” Wolfe asked.
She nodded. “We moved there a few thousand years ago. We were originally from a world whose star was going supernova, so once we managed to modify our bodies to use what the humans call magic, we left looking for a new home.
There aren’t many of us left anymore, but those who are left are in hiding. I went out to forage, and they found me, but I didn’t go back to the bunker, so the others should be safe for a few days.”
Wolfe examined the strange silver woman.
She had interesting mana patterns, and now that he knew that they were all synthetic, designed to give magic powers to a species that didn’t originally have them, he was even more intrigued.
“You said that there are more survivors of your species in a bunker, yes? What would you say to have them relocated to this world? We have a protective spell on the world, so intruders get caught in a time looped trial. Your enemies won’t follow you here.
In fact, I’m startled you managed to open a portal to me at all.”
The silver woman smiled. “You have the energy of our home on you, it made it possible to find you when I was already at a portal location. But could my people really be safe here?”
Wolfe nodded. “This world is a safe place for many species. We have demons, Fae, humans, Magi, Witches, and even a few creatures from other planes.”
She smiled. “I think it’s cute that you think Magi are real.”
That made Priya burst out laughing, which startled the silver woman into spreading her wings.
“They are. You’re looking at a Magi King. The portal you followed was from your people coming to investigate his advancement.”
“Wait, you saw more of us? Did they come here? What happened after?” She pleaded.
“I don’t know. They came, they said hello, then everyone left. I don’t even know if they returned to the same world they left from. All I know is that the ones who arrived were at the Ninth Rank, as powerful as I am.”
She frowned. “There shouldn’t have been anyone that powerful left after the bombings. Perhaps someone did survive. But could you really bring my people here safely? We will repay the debt.”
Wolfe smiled. “There is no need to repay the debt. We will let you get settled in the regions near the Castle, and you can live normal lives. You could live together if you wanted, or in family groups. I don’t mind either way. Some of the smaller villages would appreciate new magic users though, so they could implement some of the changes that the Witches have been working on to improve living conditions.”
Wolfe opened a small portal to the location where this refugee had come from, and searched the planet for signs of other similar magic users.
He could only sense three groups of them on the entire planet, all hiding underground.
“I will open portals to the three groups I found. Let me know if there are others that are hidden from my senses.” Wolfe declared as he opened the additional portals.
She looked startled, then began to sing a mournful song as the portals opened, and she saw her people.
They slowly made their way through, wary that this was a trap. But they immediately recognized Priya as a witch, or at least something about her mana.
“It’s a Witch. She found a healer. There is a healer.” They were muttering to each other as they flooded the large room.
“Please bring everyone through. This isn’t the same world, and I don’t want to alert those who were hunting you to your presence. We have much to discuss.”
