Chapter 1153: 1153 Seraph
“Make that three votes for them to stay.” An ethereal voice announced as the room began to glow with the signature light of the Upper Planes.
The Ciel began to panic and bow as the King Rank Seraph stepped into the room, simply materializing instead of using a portal.
The silver skinned beings were about to drop to their knees before a gesture from the new arrival stopped them.
“Hello, Ciel. It is curious to see you still here and very much alive. I had heard that the planet you were being developed on didn’t survive long enough for you to ascend.” The creature began.
“Yes, Master. But we managed to evolve and escape.”
“We? That is interesting as well. Ciel was originally a single, planet – scale entity. But now you have made it to a protected world, guarded by the magic of our great leaders.
There is no need to call me master. My species might have made yours, but we made many species, and you have your own free will now.
Make the best of it,” the Seraphim announced, making the simple statements sound like a divine proclamation with that oddly echoing voice his species had.
The Ciel nodded eagerly and gestured to the children. “Look at the blessed children.”
The Seraphim nodded. “That was what drew me here. Somehow, one of the little ones inherited a small portion of our magic. She is still a witch, mostly. But the wings and that beautiful white hair suggest she is just a bit more.
The Divine Host is eager to see how she grows, so I was sent here today to ensure that she has a healthy life.”
As he finished speaking, a dark tentacle crept up one wall, which was followed by a man with tentacles hanging from his face, and replacing one arm.
It was clearly a creature from the lowest planes, likely drawn here by the presence of the Seraph.
He just stood silently while the Seraph glared at him and cast a spell on Calypso.
“There, protection from above, so she grows up into the most powerful witch of her generation. Ciel, take care of yourself. We will be watching over your progress until you manage to ascend.”
Then the Seraph was gone, but not truly, as Wolfe could still fell his eyes on them, making sure that the creature from the Lowest Planes didn’t do anything to the children.
The tentacled man didn’t say anything, just extended his arm tentacle to tap Maria on the head, then withdrew it when she tried to grab and eat it.
There was a surge of magic, not from him but through him, and then he bowed and vanished back through the wall.
Wolfe smiled at the extremely upset look on Maria’s face after losing the chance to eat the tentacle, and examined the spells left behind.
They weren’t magics that he was familiar with, but both appeared to be a form of luck charm, to enhance the natural blessings that the two children were born with.
“That was incredible. Such powerful protective measures, and the luck of the Divine as well. I don’t know how you made such powerful friends, but we were incredibly lucky to end up here with you.” One of the Ciel informed Wolfe.
He smiled back at her. “You know, one of these days, we might have to get you all separate names, so I can tell which of you is which.”
They all shook their heads at the same time. “We are Ciel. Separating us by name sounds so lonely, we can’t do it.”
Wolfe nodded in acceptance, while the Witches slowly gained an enlightened expression.
“I think I know what they were trying. The greatest obstacle to humans, witches and others trying to ascend to greater things is the lack of unity. Ciel have unity, but lack the individual drive to become greater, so they remained as servants until their planet died without pushing for greater things.
We’re on opposite sides of the spectrum. One struggling to work for the common good, and the other letting the common good prevent them from working to improve themselves.” Cassie realized.
The Ciel looked vaguely insulted at the notion, but the more they considered it, the more sense it made. They had a beautiful society, but it wasn’t one that would lead them to evolve into divine beings.
But once they had that realization, they discovered that they weren’t particularly bothered by it. Unless they could make everyone ascend to a higher level, they weren’t in a rush. Community was everything for them, and there were so few Ciel left.
They had time. They could slowly split until there were Ciel for every village, and they could help the locals grow with them, then maybe they could have the whole world advance and move into an upper plane with them.
Or perhaps they should be aiming for a lower plane. This world was weirdly in balance between the Upper and Lower Planes.
From the highest and lowest planes, many powerful beings watched in amusement as a perfectly balanced world tried to discover the primordial truths of the universe.
It was a one in a trillion chance that a species would even touch on them, and that was even when they were being assisted by those who knew the answer. But somehow, they had the feeling that this world would reach them one day.
The primordial truth of the universe was less concerning at the moment than the simple concerns. For example, the fact that the Ciel were apparently delicious, and baby hands got excellent grip on feathers.
It was taking three extra sets of hands to disentangle an unwary admirer from the grip of the twins, and Ivan had curled up with the wing of a Succubus around himself as a blanket.
The feathers were good, but Succubi were warmer.
That didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to try to taste them, though. Anything that came within range of his mouth was fair game. He was building a pretty diverse knowledge of what could be chewed on and what could not.
