Chapter 994: 994 What Qualifications?

Much to Wolfe’s surprise, the next morning, there were fifteen Fae girls waiting for him outside his door with the fifteen human candidates that King Petros had brought.

Saint Josephine, the Continental Representative for the Fearia Continent, directly to the north of the Frozen Wastes and mostly covered in polar ice, was there to introduce their choices.

“Good morning Saint Noxus, We have managed to select a suitable pool of candidates, and brought those who weren’t already in the city to us from the Fae Realms. You will see some familiar faces, as we have managed to convince some of our local celebrities to join the consideration.

Khalifa the Huntress, and Drazzit the Butcher are the two representative Princesses, and I believe everyone here already knows Khalifa and her pet hounds. I am told those were a gift from you, by the way.”

Wolfe nodded, smiling at the memory of accidentally luring them into the spot where she was hidden, and how the Fae had taken them as an intentional gift.

The Fae Saint continued. “Then we have Monika the Master Smith, youngest Dwarf to make Rank One Master in a thousand years.”

That was also a familiar face, as Wolfe had seen her in the lower levels a few times when he went through to see how the design teams were doing. If he recalled correctly, she was working with the engineers.

In traditional Dwarven fashion, she handed Wolfe a mug of ale to greet the morning and then one for herself so they could drink to their first proper meeting.

“Are you drinking beer at six in the morning?” One of the human girls asked.

“Dwarven Ale, actually. We’ve got too much to do today to get into the whisky so early.” Wolfe replied, which made the young Dwarf laugh.

“Good point. Once we start properly drinking, we won’t want to do much of anything else but work the forge and tell jokes.” She agreed.

The other Fae were making mental notes of which of the competitors seemed to get along best with Wolfe and the witches, as that was likely to be a strong part of the deciding factor in who was chosen.

The human candidates, on the other hand, seemed mostly perplexed by the strange Fae customs. They stared in shock as Wolfe and the tiny bearded woman who was hardly taller than his hip both downed an entire pint of ale in one swill, and then clunked the wooden tankards together in greeting.

“Do you know a lot about Dwarves, then?” The ebony skinned elf that had been introduced as Drazzit the Butcher asked.

“Enough to brew Dwarven Ale.” Wolfe agreed, which made the slender young woman smile, showing pointed teeth and dimples on her cheeks.

“You know, when I was invited from the Unseelie Court, the Dark Fae Queen’s home, I had thought that this was some sort of joke, like they wanted us here as a showpiece while you picked the prettiest of the Light Fae, but there might be hope for you yet, Saint Noxus.” She announced.

The trolls belonging to the twins who preferred to work the border both laughed.

“The Magi Saint is a good one. He even had our witch make us a bridge.” They insisted in unison.

“A bridge? One of the walkways? I can see how that would appeal to the trolls.” The Dark Elf replied with a gentle smile.

“No, even better, a drawbridge on the river at the border, so we can open and close it.”

Now the Fae were truly impressed, but the bridge had been entirely for the convenience of their witches. The river was deep, and sometimes they needed to be on the other side, so it would be a waste to make them use magic all the time, and Wolfe had just agreed when they suggested it.

But now that Wolfe was up, and the rounds of introductions were ongoing, it was time to get to the real work. Splitting everyone up for the morning so that they could meet the existing Pentacles. But he knew a simple way to make that entertaining, and keep the chaos from getting too out of hand.

“I am going to make a set of numbers. One through fifteen A through C. The Existing Pentacles get ticket A, The humans ticket B, and the Fae will be ticket group C. You will be with that group for the morning, and then we will rotate the groups after lunch, so that over the next week, everyone gets to meet each other.” Wolfe announced.

“So we will be stuck with whatever human we draw?” One of the Fae complained.

“Of course not. After lunch, they will go down a number from group A, you will go up a number from Group A, and then it will continue until all the members of Group A have met everyone and have a good idea of who can work well in an unfamiliar setting.” Wolfe explained.

That was just the basics of cooperation, and Wolfe trusted the existing Pentacles to give him honest answers.

Well, it wasn’t like they could lie to him when he could use the bond to read their minds, but he didn’t think that would be necessary. They would tell him who they could get along with and why they couldn’t stand some of the others.

The Candidates should all be qualified in their own ways, so how well they could work together to overcome adversity would be a major deciding factor.

One of the human girls, a blonde teen named Serra, raised her hand. “There are uneven numbers. Fifteen in the Pentacles plus you. Or will you not be joining the evaluations?”

Wolfe smiled. “On the contrary. There is one missing from the Pentacles. Priya is in Sylvan City right now, so I will be taking her spot in the rotation. She has duties there that she couldn’t escape from on short notice, and that will become reality for all of you soon enough.

Now, I will make the tokens, and everyone can join their first group for the morning.”
