Chapter 1432: The Night Dagger

Chapter 1432: The Night Dagger

In the alleys of Nexus, Arthur and Ali met with Tiara who was trying some of the local delicacies of the city. It was a small-leafed snack that tasted like heaven, as did all other things in the Spirits Realm. Tiara became addicted to eating them after Arthur taught her to taste and feel things.

"You should have some," Tiara said. "These are delicious."

"How many spirit coins do we have left?" Ali asked with a frown.

Tiara acted like she didn't hear him, and turned around to keep eating from the vendor. Ali repeated his question, and Tiara looked at him with a sheepish, half-formed grin.

"Spirit coins are actually the most important thing at the moment. These coins indeed form the economical pillars," Ali began lecturing her while Arthur tasted some of the leafy snack himself. It was indeed delicious.

It seemed that unlike Arthur, who had an overflowing spiritual energy, others needed to replenish theirs to continue using sigils or keeping themselves materialized. This created the concept of spirit food, a method to let spiritual energy be digested by seekers.

Spirit coins themselves were made of spiritual energy, and they could be created by seekers as ways to store their spiritual energy. The problem was that the control required to create an everlasting coin wasn't something seekers of this layer could achieve. Thus, Lord Halstren was the sole supplier of the coins in this layer.

It had been three days since the group arrived in Nexus. Arthur had the chance of encountering numerous seekers from different worlds. He began learning about their culture and challenges, while also gathering information on Devaheim.

The realm of gods was known across most worlds, albeit under different names. Arthur noticed that most people feared talking ill of them, and many more revered them. A few hinted at their corruption, but they were hushed by their companions.

Across all worlds, Devaheim was the final realm for awakeners and seekers of powers. They could achieve it through the usage of mana or spiritual energy, but the two were distinct paths from each other. Mana was a rare resource in the universe, and it was considered an external energy. Spiritual energy came from souls, which made it easier to harness.

One tames oneself and the other tames the universe.

Each of the two paths was harder than the other. Assimilating one's powers was easier, but more complex. Harnessing mana and the powers of the universe was easier, but laced with dangers and required them to break their limits.

This was common knowledge for the seekers, who came here to advance their souls. It turned out that the spirit realm was not merely a destination of monks, but everyone attempting to raise the limits of their souls.

Arthur had already realized long ago that spiritual energy was the equivalent of potential. He couldn't give runes to people with low spiritual energy, like the King of Berilo.

"We should get back for now," Arthur said, and the three made their way through the streets of Nexus. A commotion rose from behind them, as the seekers parted ways to allow a group to enter the city.

A long line of seekers came through the main street. Each seeker rode a spirit as a mount, and they varied in shapes and colors. The bystanders whispered among themselves as the spirits dragged ethereal cages behind them with people inside.

"Abyssal users," said a nearby man. "It seems they managed to catch a few. Who did it this time?"

"It's Mora's group," another woman chimed in as she pointed at the woman riding high above the others. The three looked up to see the old woman sitting atop a giant flying turtle.

Arthur met her gaze. She gave him a slight nod, which he returned. As the caravan crossed them, they managed to see the giant cage dragging behind them on the ground, forming two trails across the soil.

After receiving the Legacy of Spirits, Arthur became more aware of the emotional state of souls around him. It was the first time that he met an abyssal spirit user since he obtained this new ability.

A surge of emotions washed over him—loss, helplessness, anger, and hatred. The resonance of their emotions affected his mood, but Arthur saw flashes of memories from their lives. Some of them were human, others were from other races.

And then, a familiar face.

His own.

In the memories of another.

Arthur looked at the source of the memory, and saw a man of ethereal white with a black orb in his chest. The orb was pulsing, sending waves of darkness washing through him. The man's emotions were loss, hatred, and apathy.

The caravan passed, and Arthur remained standing while staring at the cage dragging across the street. His mouth remained open, while his eyes seemed to carry a hint of nostalgia and guilt.

"What's wrong?" Tiara asked, sensing his emotions.

"Someone I know is an abyssal user," Arthur admitted as he pressed his lips together. He turned toward his friends with a golden face. "What fate awaits them?"

"Soul-destruction," said the man from earlier. "Forget about your friend. Once he joined the dark side, he will never be redeemed. These seekers will be thrown against the Guardian of Judgement a week from now."

Arthur remained silent as he looked once again toward the disappearing figures. He never thought he would see an old face here, but it made sense for this man to fall to the darkness. After all, the darkness craved him.

That's the reason Arthur named him Lusica.

He was the knight that served Arthur in Alka and fought to save him against Kar. Arthur knew that he tried to kill Ai in order to bring him back, which was a decision he didn't approve. However, his loyalty to him was unquestionable.

Guilt ate away at his soul as Arthur remembered everyone that he left in Alka. He sealed away the unpleasant memories of that timeline, but he was wrong for abandoning the people who believed in him.

This time, he wanted to make things right.

This time, he wouldn't allow Lusica to fall to the darkness.
