Book 16: Chapter 10
It was a joyous reunion for Sixth and I as it had been ages since we last caught up. I promptly ordered a delivery from Dongpo to welcome him with a big banquet. When he saw the wine and steaming dishes that took a good while to prepare, Sixth was stunned. With a chuckle, I explained, “The stars told me that an old friend from the south would visit, so I prepared some wine to treat you.”
Sixth had always been a fan of researching things in depth, especially martial arts. Unfortunately, even with Grandmaster’s tutelage, he had not reached the same level of sophistication.
Since numerous friends joined the banquet, the sorrow of Boss’ departure was a little more bearable.
After finding out that Sixth was the top-ranked warrior on Seventeen Hidden Wyrms, Ling Jialan raised her drink and respectfully expressed, “This one has heard many legends about you. May I boldly make a personal request?”
I did not even need her to explicate it to know that she wanted to request a duel. I also knew that she would not have her way.
Sixth smiled and replied, “Whether it is possible or not is only one thought away. Your question is close to cultivation. I must put adequate thought into my response. Howbeit, since you have asked, I cannot leave you waiting…”
Seeing Ling Jialan confused, I hastily raised my drink to offer everyone a toast, snapping them back to the banquet.
With most people gone with Boss to Luoyang, Wawa took up the post of the host. “Lian Zhuiyue, why are you in the capital out of the blue?”
As Sixth went to answer, I answered, “Just visiting me.”
Ling Jialan suddenly queried, “How long do you intend to stay in the capital for, Warrior Lian? I would like to pay a visit to learn from you.”I answered, “He’ll be gone in a few days.”
Liu Yuan inquired, “Will you be staying here tonight, Warrior Lian? I shall prepare a room for you if you are.”
I replied, “I have my arrangements. I’ll handle all his lodging matters.”
Everyone turned their attention to me, confused.
Tang Ni grinned. “Mr. Ming, when did you become his official representative? I’m almost under the impression that Warrior Lian is mute.”
Bai Lian pulled her brows together. “Ming Feizhen, let your junior speak. Why are you constantly cutting him off whenever he tries to respond?”
Before I could respond, Sixth replied, “It matters not. First Brother is worried I am unaccustomed to the unfamiliar setting, inexperienced, not good at holding my liquor and embarrassing myself in your presences.”
The heartily laughed it off as me being too worried about my junior.
Bai Lian affably said, “I haven’t met many people as polite as Brother Lian in the capital. You’re better off worrying about yourself, Ming Feizhen. Let him speak for himself.”
The others voiced their agreement. I could understand their enthusiasm and interest considering Sixth’s reputation. Since they were so keen, I decided to just mind my business and focus on eating. They asked for it.
Originally, there were multiple speakers. Not long after, there was only one. By the time the moon was higher in the sky and people had started snoring, he was still going at a steady pace.
“… Therefore, I worry that I am not working hard enough and failing in my role as a junior brother.”
Sixth was usually just wordy, but somebody had to go and ask him for the purpose of his visit, prompting him to bring out a thick scroll from his luggage and start his recital.
Sixth virtually wrote me a novel intended to provide me with advice and was shaking his head as he reached chapter eight. We had already wrapped up three games of mahjong by the time he reached chapter three. Seeing as he was going to continue, I urged, “Wait! Sixth, your writing is too profound. I’ll study it in depth once there’s nobody else around.”
“That would mean waiting until there is nobody left in the world. Are you trying to fool me, First Brother?”
“I meant when I’m by myself in my room!”
How did he know I was fooling him?!
“Okay.” Sixth looked very reluctant to stop. As soon as I was about to suggest he go catch some shut eye in the guest room, he took out another scroll and said, “Then, have a listen to ‘Leaving the Mountain Schedule.’ Taken away before he could finish his journey, Shifu…”
“Stop! Stop! Stop!”
If Shifu heard you speaking of him as if he were dead, he’d take you back to Emei for a faeces bath!
“Your plagiarism is blatant. There’s a before and after, too, isn’t there?”
Sixth beamed. “Yes, there is a successive part that follows after departing from the mountain. I have only completed half of it and am was planning t-”
Stop planning!
“Our predecessors’ wisdom is worth more than gold. How can we just cast away their wisdom?”
I rubbed my aching head. “Did you come all the way from Beiping just to tell me this stuff?”
“It is one. I wanted you to hear the advice first. I will address the second purpose before dawn.”
“I’ve heard the advice loud and clear. Move on to the second topic now.”
Sixth smiled. “Okay. The second purpose is to inform you that Grandaunt is fine and misses you. If you do not pay her a visit in Beiping, it is very likely she will come searching for you.”
“I’m busy. If she’s willing to pay a visit, then…”
Wait, Lass Yu is also here. If the two of them meet up… I mean, I’m rich now, but I don’t want to spend my savings on repairing Liu Shan Men.
“I’ll write her a letter. Please deliver it to her for me.”
“Understood. In that case, I shall move on to reporting on the battle in Beiping. When the first ray of sunlight shone through that d-”
“Stop, stop, stop!”
Am I even going to get to sleep if you start from day one?
“By the way, did you know I’ve taken on a disciple?”
