Chapter 978: Candid Ambitions
The Monster was practically out of strength… but with Ling Mo’s kick, it stumbled forward, dragged helplessly into the darkness. This Monster was truly unlucky-not only was it beaten to exhaustion, but it couldn’t even make a sound. Every time it opened its mouth, drool would spill out, its mind consumed by hunger…
The force pulling it was, of course, the Mobile Phone, but how Ling Mo managed to maintain the balance between the two was beyond Xu Shuhan’s understanding.
“Even if I asked him, he wouldn’t explain… never mind, that’s not the main point,” Xu Shuhan thought, comforting herself. To her, Ling Mo’s Superpower was shrouded in mystery. At first glance, it seemed he was using psychic power directly on objects, but when he made a pulling gesture, she felt she might have misunderstood…
“But he really knows how to save energy…”
With the Monster unable to effectively resist, Ling Mo’s control was noticeably easier. Under their watchful eyes, the Monster and the Mobile Phone slowly vanished into the darkness, completely disappearing from their view.
“What now?” Xu Shuhan asked after a few moments of silence.
“Wait,” Ling Mo replied succinctly.
In this silent and deep passage, waiting seemed to be their only option…
Meanwhile, Ling Mo’s Zombie Puppet had just passed through the arched passage. He now stood at the edge of the tunnel.
On the way, he hadn’t encountered any new virus membranes or those vicious big fish… the water surface was dark and calm, not even a drip could be heard behind him.
“Considering the main body’s experience… we might need to reassess our understanding of this place,” the Zombie Puppet thought, scanning the surroundings, “The newly emerged ‘Giant God Warrior’ has disrupted everything, but from another perspective, it might be a new opportunity. On the Zombie Puppet’s side, I’ve discovered these Underground creatures… and those membranes… suggesting Xia Na’s hypothesis might be correct. The Underground creatures here likely split into two systems, yet they share the same Progenitor.”
Clearly, all issues converged on this Progenitor… unlike other Zombie-type Progenitors, this one had significant ambitions. It not only treated surface creatures as its livestock but also attempted to cultivate “Giant God Warriors” capable of quick transformation into humans. The ultimate goal was to ascend to the surface, even blend into human society…
“Wait… no wonder I felt something was off when I heard the name… the name itself reveals everything!” Ling Mo finally realized, albeit belatedly… but compared to its ambitions, this Progenitor’s naming was surprisingly candid!
Moreover, what intrigued Ling Mo was the transformation. The transformation ability of the “Giant God Warrior” and Tang Hao’s transformation seemed different, yet upon closer inspection, they shared a subtle commonality-one turns Monsters into humans, the other turns humans into Monsters, their similarity lies in the reversal…
Not only that, in terms of duration and consumption, these transformation abilities were practically identical!
“And Tang Hao mentioned their abilities required something from here to be perfected, preventing side effects. This suggests their abilities originated from here… unfortunately, the key figure Butterfly, who first acquired this ability, is now dead.
No, that’s not right… Butterfly might not have been the first; the original should be the Progenitor! Additionally, the source of the ‘Giant God Warrior’s’ information and its initial imitation target could be this group… but…”
But there’s a significant gap in this theory; unless it’s filled, the whole matter can’t be fully understood, and the doubts will remain. Ling Mo’s task now was to find a way to fill this gap.
Another crucial task was to locate the missing Yuwen Xuan… a Monster transformed into Yuwen Xuan, and the presence of Yuwen Xuan’s suit on it… these suggested Yuwen Xuan’s situation might be dire…
“But if Yuwen Xuan were truly dead, why would the Monster be in such a hurry? Against two isolated prey, it should be more composed. Yet if Yuwen Xuan is safe, where could he be now?”
Could he be in that darkness?
With this thought, Ling Mo’s main body took a deep breath.
Everything depended on the outcome of their waiting…
Meanwhile, his Zombie Puppet also took a deep breath.
Having both sides act simultaneously was both a burden and a great convenience for Ling Mo. Despite the different locations and tasks, the discoveries could mutually confirm each other. During this process, Ling Mo felt as if he were slowly unfolding the underground tapestry with both hands… ℟ἈꞐOʙΕȘ
“Shhh…”
Outside the passage, there was indeed a pool.
And compared to the previous one, this was like a small washbasin…
“It’s huge!”
This massive pool was roughly the size of a public swimming pool, its surface wide and deep, with numerous concrete tunnel entrances on both sides, and a long passage on the other side, vaguely visible with a fence…
“Well… the street’s accumulated water probably converged here…” Ling Mo sighed.
The only system not paralyzed post-Cataclysm seemed to be the underground drainage… but this was hardly a good thing! Humans hadn’t utilized this system, giving these Monsters a year-long development period… compared to the outside world, this was like an independent ecosystem. They relied on livestock for growth and survival, and their biggest weakness so far seemed to be Intelligence…
“But with creatures like ‘Giant God Warriors,’ this flaw is negligible… who would’ve thought they secretly trained spies! What is this place? The Intelligence Bureau?” Ling Mo muttered to himself, searching for a foothold.
Though nothing was visible from the water surface, the surrounding environment suggested that if there were indeed a large number of Monsters, they were likely near this massive pool… and from Ling Mo’s perspective, the area to focus on was probably the pool’s bottom…
He cautiously adjusted his breathing, trying not to make a sound… in fact, half of his tunnel entrance was submerged, so when he looked forward, all he saw was the still water surface… the pressure was immense. Moreover, his task wasn’t just exploration; there were other things… meaning he had to cherish the Zombie Puppet’s life, or else Xia Na and the others would be waiting in vain.
“If I swim, there’ll be noise, and unlike the outside pool, once dragged underwater here, there’s probably no chance of resurfacing… so…” Ling Mo clung to the edge, inching his body forward.
He planned to climb along the wall, providing a foothold and avoiding being attacked from all sides… but as he inserted his nails into the wall’s crevices, slowly submerging, he failed to notice…
Far away, a series of bubbles suddenly appeared on the water surface, slowly approaching his direction…
“Hoo…”
Before fully submerging, Ling Mo took a deep breath.
“Gulu…”
As ripples spread, the Zombie Puppet’s head vanished beneath the surface. Meanwhile, the distant bubbles also disappeared…
