My Werewolf System

Chapter 1338 - 1338: A Tense Family Reunion in Ruin City

Under the peculiar circumstances, Dean found himself in the throne room of the castle in Ruin City, alone with his brother, Lupus, the fierce leader of the city and its werewolf pack.

“Of all the people you sent to get me, did it really have to be Garlark? You know I never liked the man,” Dean stated, his voice laced with annoyance. There was another, deeper reason for his apprehension; due to his role working with a particular person, it was dangerous for any werewolf to seek him out. Garlark was more than lucky he hadn’t ended up dead, thankfully Rickle had decided to let things go and even allowed him to come to this meeting. Even Dean had no idea what went through that man’s mind at times.

“That’s the first thing you have to say to me after all this time we’ve been apart?” Lupus asked, a hint of something unreadable in his tone.

“What, you want a hug?” Dean retorted, his hand unconsciously brushing against the guitar case strapped to his back, concealing a very particular weapon.

Lupus chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. “I don’t know how you did it—well, I had an idea since your fur ended up at NIRV—but you’re no longer a werewolf. I beat you before, and I can beat you again, so I think you should be a little more respectful, don’t you?”

“If you really think I’m so easy to beat, you can give it a try,” Dean answered, his stance firm.

“I’m happy about one thing: even no longer being like us, you still have a spine,” Lupus admitted. “I heard you started a family. You did what you always wanted to do, right? I’m happy for you. I hope you got to spend a lot of time with them.”

Those words hit Dean heavily. He hadn’t spent as much time with his family as he would have liked. He wondered how much Lupus truly knew. Had he looked into things? Dean doubted he had any idea of the sacrifices he also had to make to no longer be an Alpha.

“Lupus, I thought we had an agreement. Why did you ask to talk to me after all this time?” Dean asked, his voice softening slightly. “I’m no longer part of the pack. In order to live the way we live, I thought we understood it was best for us not to talk to each other, or is this because of—” Dean paused for a moment, his gaze sharpening. “—the other Alpha?”

“Are you talking about your son?” Lupus asked, his eyes unblinking.

Dean couldn’t help it; his heart began to thump louder, a frantic rhythm that he knew Lupus could hear. There was no hiding his reactions.

“I wasn’t involved in it,” Dean said immediately, his voice desperate. “If I had things my way, I would have never had him involved in any of this.”

“I know. Fate is cruel,” Lupus answered, a rare note of solemnity in his voice. “I had wanted to get your fur so no other pack could be created. If another Alpha was to appear, I wished for it to be one of my own, and I would deal with matters. When I learned about the relation of who the other Alpha was, I stayed in this room, thinking about how cruel fate could truly be. However, it seems he really is one of us. He has grown strong and built his empire. If anything, I think he’s far more of an impressive man than his father, I have to give you that!” Lupus said, laughing with a surprising burst of joy.

Instead, Dean was filled with bitter sadness. Gary had grown into this man without him; he couldn’t take any credit for what his son had achieved.

“The boy is strong, incredibly strong,” Lupus said, holding onto his chest, a ghost of an old wound. “I can personally vouch for that myself.”

This caused Dean to raise an eyebrow, a flicker of confusion.

“I guess your connections aren’t as good as you think,” Lupus continued, noticing Dean’s expression. “I’m sure you’re aware the vampire has used the Altered Hunters to attack this place? Well, your son and his group, I should say, were personally involved.”

The sound of Dean’s heartbeat pounded even louder in his ears. He knew of the attack, but he had no idea about his son’s involvement, and now a thousand terrifying thoughts flooded his mind.

“Don’t worry, your son is alive and safe,” Lupus said, his voice strangely reassuring. “I couldn’t beat him even if I wanted to, and I’m sure those vampires tricked him. They seem to be making a lot of moves these days.”

Right there and then, Dean fell to his knees, placing his head on the cold stone ground. “Brother, Lupus, I beg of you, please can you let my son go? I’ll do whatever you want, I’ll help you out in whatever way you can, but does it really have to be this way!” Dean shouted, his voice hoarse with anguish. “If we keep you two apart, surely there is a way we can stop this! I figured out one way before, which means that there should be other ways out there as well! Please, Lupus!”

Although Dean had been curious at first as to why he had been called, now he didn’t care about the reason, or even his own life. He just wanted to reassure his son’s safety.

“Do you really think so low of your son?” Lupus asked, his voice firm. “Your son is far stronger than you think. It’s not just me that you have to ask that question to; it’s him as well. We now both have the power to wipe each other out, and that’s just exactly what the vampires want, and I don’t plan to fall into the vampires’ trap,” Lupus claimed. “You raised a strong and powerful son. I want you to speak to him, to tell him I have no interest in fighting against each other. Pass this message along to your son: I wish to talk, and to prove that, we can talk face to face after the night of the full moon. He will understand what I mean by that.”
