Chapter 116: I like this
"Don't dodge!"
Qin Hao, sharp-eyed, heard Wang Zijun's remark and turned around, catching sight of the mark. He pulled it out for a closer look and frowned.
"Pretty symmetrical..." Wang Zijun clicked his tongue in amazement. "What happened?"
"What could have happened?" Xu Qing nonchalantly withdrew his hand. "Just got a bit rowdy while messing around, that's all."
Rowdy?
Rowdy enough to leave marks on the wrist?
Wang Zijun froze for a moment at Xu Qing's explanation, then glanced at Jiang He. Suddenly, a vivid image of Xu Qing being cuffed to a bed flashed in his mind...
"C***..."
Wang Zijun cursed under his breath, his gaze at Xu Qing becoming distinctly different."What?" Qin Hao was still puzzled.
"You know... that kind of thing..." Wang Zijun leaned over and whispered.
"M?"
Shock spread across Qin Hao's normally stern face.
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Xu Qing scolded.
The two exchanged a glance and then looked at Xu Qing with complex expressions.
Man, he plays hard.
"Stop overthinking. It’s... it’s just drinking, let’s drink!"
Xu Qing, uncomfortable under their stares, grabbed his glass and knocked it against the table, urging everyone to join in.
The three of them gathered to celebrate the New Year, and it was quite different from before. In past years, they’d huddle in Xu Qing's "dog den," set up a hotpot, grab some drinks and snacks, and spend the evening singing their hearts out.
This year... Well, Wang Zijun saw right through it. This guy was making a statement: take note, no more random partying invites—he’s under new management!
As the dishes were served, Winter Melon (the cat) circled under the table, meowing. Xu Qing tossed it a small piece of chicken. When Wang Zijun tried to pour Jiang He a drink, Xu Qing quickly stopped him.
"Don’t, she doesn’t drink."
"Not at all?"
"Not a drop."
Her arm still hurts.
Xu Qing wouldn’t dare let Jiang He drink again. He also moderated his own intake, encouraging the others to eat more and drink less.
He had no idea what kind of alcohol they drank during the Kaiyuan era or its strength, but he had learned one thing: Jiang He was a terrible drunk. She would start staring at people with shining eyes, much like Winter Melon. After staring for a bit, she’d pin someone down for a fierce kiss—and follow that up with punches.
No way was she drinking.
"Sometimes I think things have changed so fast. One of you became a police officer and is always busy on duty—every call is about responding to a case or handling something urgent. The other just stays home with his girlfriend... leaving me by myself. Even drinking feels dull."
Wang Zijun sighed, stuffing a piece of pork head meat into his mouth. The large pig head Xu Qing had brought home for New Year's Eve still wasn’t finished. He’d sent a piece to Aunt Cheng, but there was plenty left to whip up into dishes every now and then.
"I really am busy, especially around the start and end of the year. Everything piles up," Qin Hao said, sipping a little from his glass. "I can only have a tiny bit—don’t push me. Things are different now. I’m a public servant."
"Last time you said it was fine."
"Last time was last time. It’s Spring Festival now... Anyway, I can’t drink much, just a sip or two."
"How does it feel to have your dream come true?"
Xu Qing handed Jiang He a piece of food, gesturing for her to eat freely.
"It’s great—keeps me busy every day," Qin Hao nodded, focused on eating.
"Man, I’m jealous." Wang Zijun grinned. "I’m bored every single day."
"Not everyone’s a loafer like you," Xu Qing teased. He only got to act superior like this when scolding Wang Zijun for being lazy.
"That’s true. I can’t compare to a noble man, a pure man, a man of morals, a man above base interests... Ah, Haozi, it’s my honor to know you. Cheers!"
Wang Zijun raised his glass toward Qin Hao. Remembering what Qin Hao had just said, he added, "I’ll drink; you can do as you please."
Jiang He quietly ate her food, occasionally glancing up, trying to pick up on their easy banter.
"Still, Qing, you’ve got it good," Wang Zijun remarked, glancing around. "A cat, a person, something to do, and spare time to boot."
"Everyone has their worries."
Xu Qing was preoccupied with figuring out how to resolve the many issues looming ahead. Every day he had to revise his plans to make sure nothing went wrong.
Suddenly having someone pop into his life, marrying her legally—it was a monumental task.
If only he had the skills of Bai Suzhen: she knew magic and the ways of the world. Borrowing an umbrella during their first meeting and confessing her love in the second, she set Xu Xian’s life up perfectly...
But no, Xu Xian was a naive, honest scholar, dreaming of passing the imperial exams. In the end, Bai Suzhen caused him to lose his prospects, get exiled, fall out with some imperial officials, and even clash with Liang Wang’s household. Talk about a bad omen.
Jiang He was much better—adorable, uncomplicated, and no trouble at all.
Xu Qing snapped back to reality, smiling as he looked at Jiang He quietly enjoying her meal.
Meanwhile, Wang Zijun and Qin Hao, after a bit of alcohol, somehow started talking about him again:
"Remember that trip to Emei? He got beat up by a monkey and went back the next day with a stick, asking for a rematch. That’s when I realized he has some... peculiar tastes."
Wang Zijun declared this as if it were an irrefutable fact.
"It wasn’t just me! Haozi was there too," Xu Qing retorted, clenching his fists. "Next time we go, I’ll beat that monkey so bad its mother won’t recognize it."
"Summer?" Qin Hao suggested.
"Summer..."
Xu Qing hesitated. Half a year might not be enough to train properly. Getting beaten up again would be embarrassing.
"Forget it. Let them off the hook."
"Chicken."
"Haha, he’s chickening out."
Wang Zijun laughed, eating another bite before turning to Jiang He. "Why so quiet, sis-in-law?"
"Huh?"
Jiang He was flustered by the sudden title. "I-I’m just eating."
"She’s not into chatting with you," Xu Qing said bluntly.
"Not true." Jiang He quickly waved her hand, trying not to seem so out of place. After a moment of hesitation, she asked, "Was he badly beaten by the monkeys?"
"Hahaha, it was tragic. The two of them were chased all over by those monkeys... Wait, let me find the video. I was snapping photos from a distance back then."
Wang Zijun laughed uncontrollably as he started looking for the "blackmail material."
"And you didn’t dare to join in," Xu Qing shot back with a glare.
"You’ve all known each other for a long time?" Jiang He ventured, trying to join the conversation.
Xu Qing fell silent, refilling Wang Zijun’s glass instead.
"A long time. Four years of college together... Those two go back even further—they’ve known each other since they were in split pants."
"Oh, college." Jiang He nodded. "Was it back when he had red hair...?"
"No, the red hair was earlier, before we met. We only saw the cringe-worthy photos."
"I knew him then. He had red hair that covered one eye—so edgy," Qin Hao remarked. Thankfully, he’d stuck to his signature buzz cut; otherwise, he’d cringe looking back now.
"..."
Xu Qing listened expressionlessly as Jiang He dug into his embarrassing past.
My own wife—it’s fine, it’s fine.
