“Senior, you’re the Dragon Sovereign. How can you shout like that? I almost died of shock,” said Long Chen speechlessly.
He had been quietly observing the outside world when the Dragon Sovereign’s voice exploded in his mind like thunder. The sudden outburst nearly made him jump out of his own skin.
“Sorry, I forgot to control my voice,” said the Dragon Sovereign awkwardly.
Its excitement was normal. For the longest time, it had wondered why Long Chen wasn’t seizing this opportunity to elevate his power. This was the optimal moment to come up with new divine abilities from the runes he had gained.
“Is it because of him?” asked the Dragon Sovereign.
Long Chen’s heart trembled. His eyes darted around cautiously.
“Relax,” the Dragon Sovereign assured him. “We share core divine runes. He cannot eavesdrop on our conversation.”
Only then did Long Chen breathe easier. He nodded. “Yes. If I cultivate now, he’ll copy everything I do. Every technique I learn, he learns. But I don’t learn his techniques. That puts me at a major disadvantage.”
“But you two are two bodies—your every move is under his gaze. He’ll learn your techniques eventually. How about next time he appears, I help you suppress him completely?” the Dragon Sovereign offered.
Long Chen immediately shook his head. “No. He is my heart-devil. If you suppress him for me, he’ll look down on me. I’ve already been looked down on once. I won’t let it happen again. If I rely on external help, I’ll never have true clarity in my heart. Even if I seal him away, a new heart-devil will be born. I have to defeat him myself.”Long Chen’s pride burned fiercely. He would never forget the scornful look in the white-robed Long Chen’s eyes when the latter had tricked him. Even after all these years, it remained a thorn in his heart.
After that, Long Chen swore that he would beat his heart-devil with absolute power. A heart-devil was not necessarily a bad thing. He was actually Long Chen’s strongest grindstone. With him present, Long Chen constantly felt a sense of danger, which drove him to get stronger.
Back then, the Dragon Sovereign had done the same thing. It had raised its heart-devil into a grind stone for itself. However, the Dragon Sovereign was simply too strong, so strong that its heart-devil despaired. That was why it changed its goal and wanted to kill them both.
If it weren’t for that change, Long Chen believed that the Dragon Sovereign would have permitted its heart-devil to exist forever.
“Alright, I respect your choice,” said the primal chaos Dragon Sovereign.
A heart-devil was the ultimate opponent, the ever-present shadow that forced the true self to evolve. This relentless pressure ensured that Long Chen would never slack off.
“Senior, don’t worry, everything is under control.” Long Chen smiled slightly.
Seeing that Long Chen was so confident, the Dragon Sovereign didn’t say anything more. Although it didn’t know what Long Chen was thinking, it chose to trust him.
Though Long Chen often seemed unreliable, when it truly mattered, he was never careless.
Originally, the Dragon Sovereign had planned to guide Long Chen in comprehending the dragon race’s divine abilities, correcting him if he strayed from the right path. However, with his heart-devil lurking, and Long Chen claiming to have his own method to handle it, the Dragon Sovereign decided to wait and observe.
They continued their journey when, suddenly, Long Chen caught a flash of green light. It flickered for an instant before vanishing.
“Green Old Sixth!” Long Chen shouted in delight.
Though the figure had disappeared in a blink, he had clearly sensed its fluctuations—it was a green parrot.
The speed was astounding. In an instant, it was gone, leaving Long Chen uncertain if it had even heard him.
Before entering the Heaven Vein Mystic Realm, he had coincidentally encountered this green trickster. He had swindled several Silver Wing Heaven Devils from its grasp, along with a powerful curse art.
Suddenly, space quivered. The green figure reappeared, its emerald feathers shimmering with light. Its sharp eyes flickered back and forth as it examined the Ten Thousand Dragon Nest with suspicion.
“Who is it? Who called me? Get out here!” shouted the parrot.
Long Chen grinned. “Damn, it really is you! It’s been a while—I missed you.”
Stopping the Ten Thousand Dragon Nest, Long Chen stepped forward.
The parrot spread its wings warmly, looking pleased to see a familiar face. But then, its expression twisted.
“Wait a minute! I remember now! You’re the scammer! You stole my treasures and even forced me to teach you my curse art! You swindler! You fraud!”
Its hostility flared instantly, its feathers puffing up as it looked ready to peck Long Chen to death.
“Hey, what are you saying? Aren’t good friends supposed to share in both blessings and hardships? You had good fortune, so you shared it with me. And I also split my blessings with you,” Long Chen argued.
“Peh, when did you share your blessings with me?” said the parrot, not falling for it.
“I tried! But you weren’t there when I had blessings to share,” Long Chen said helplessly.
By now, Long Chen had approached the parrot, whose size was nearly equal to his own. Its aura was vastly different from before. Hence, Long Chen secretly studied it—each of its feathers carried traces of ancient Jiuli immortal runes, which meant it had undergone a massive transformation since their last encounter.
Although Long Chen didn’t know its origins, the Earth Cauldron’s previous reaction to it proved that it was no ordinary being. Hence, befriending it would be beneficial.
“Nonsense! I’m here right now. Where are your blessings!?” demanded the parrot.
Long Chen reached out a hand and patted it on the shoulder, warmly saying, “Of course there are. Let me tell you, I’ve encountered a huge opportunity. If I can obtain it, I will be unrivaled beneath the heavens. As long as you can help me obtain it, then all treasures in the Heaven Vein Mystic Realm will be yours. I guarantee it.”
The parrot’s sharp eyes narrowed. “Are you talking about that dragon scale?”
When it saw Long Chen’s expression twitch slightly, it instantly cursed. “Fuck off! You’re trying to use me again! That dragon scale is useless to me—I’m not a dragon! Do you take me for a fool?”
“But it’s useful to me. And aren’t we friends? My strength is your strength, right?” Long Chen coaxed.
The parrot hesitated. “That does make sense… Wait! Hold up! When did we become friends?!”
Its eyes widened in realization. With a furious flap of its wings, it turned into a green streak and shot away at an astonishing speed.
Its voice echoed from the distance. “You’re too sinister! I’m keeping my distance from you!”
