Online Game: I Started with Max Charisma and Caught the Goddess's Eye
Chapter 417 - 417: Escalating Tensions, The Senator’s EscapeIn the deepest chamber of the Daskhollow facility under Zenith Technology Company, within a luxurious room, Senator Devitt suddenly opened his eyes.
He had already spent three days at the Daskhollow base.
During these three days, he had successfully recovered most of his strength.
However, his mood was far from relaxed.
Because within these three days, he had sensed something abnormal inside the base.
The staff at the base were extremely polite whenever they saw him, but beneath the surface of their courtesy lay a concealed wariness.
Everyone seemed to be watching him.
Just last night, he had sought out the base director, Nova.
He stated his intentions clearly: he believed he had mostly recovered, and thus, there was no need for him to remain at the base any longer.
But Nova’s reaction was exceedingly strange.
She did not allow Senator Devitt to leave.
On the contrary, she asked him to remain at the Daskhollow base for another week.
Her odd insistence only deepened Senator Devitt’s suspicions.
Finally, after a full day of contemplation, Senator Devitt decided to escape from the Daskhollow base.
It was now evening — the time when security at the base was at its weakest.
He had already made all the necessary preparations.
Just then, a familiar voice called from outside the door.
“Senator, dinner is ready. Commander Nova is waiting for you.”
“I understand. I’ll freshen up and be right there.”
Senator Devitt answered promptly. The staff member outside had no reason to doubt him and promptly walked away.
Sensing no one remained outside, he immediately transformed into a streak of pink shadow and passed silently through the door.
That pink silhouette zipped down the corridor, heading directly toward the elevator leading to the top floor of the Daskhollow base.
Based on his observations over the past three days, this particular elevator was never used at this hour.
He only needed to ride it straight to the top floor — and then, escaping the base would be remarkably easy.
Everything was going smoothly.
Once activated, the elevator began to move swiftly.
Five minutes from now, Senator Devitt would be able to escape from the Daskhollow base.
At the same time, Nova was still waiting for Senator Devitt in the banquet hall.
She glanced at the clock. “Did you not inform him to attend the dinner?”
Nova asked coldly, turning to the staff member beside her.
“Ma’am, I informed Senator Devitt on time! And he responded quite well! Perhaps he’s simply taking a bit longer to freshen up — I don’t think there’s any need for concern.”
Nova nodded calmly.
But in the very next moment, her expression changed drastically.
“No—something’s definitely wrong!”
Nova stood up abruptly. While rushing at full speed toward Senator Devitt’s quarters, she gave an order without hesitation: “Seal off all exits to the base—immediately!”
The personnel inside the base were startled by Nova’s reaction.
Nevertheless, they followed her orders instinctively.
Within seconds, every single exit of the Daskhollow base had been sealed shut.
At the same time, all operating elevators were immediately halted.
The elevator carrying Senator Devitt was still three levels away from the base’s exit.
The moment the elevator stopped, he realized that his escape had been discovered.
Senator Devitt once again transformed into a red blur of shadow. This time, he shot straight up through the elevator shaft, reaching the floor closest to the surface.
There, he swiftly dropped his disguise—because on this level, the only option was to break out by force!
His sudden appearance startled the guards stationed there.
But this time, the guards had already received direct orders from Nova. They raised their weapons, pointing them squarely at Senator Devitt.
“Sir, without Commander Nova’s authorization, you are not permitted to proceed any further!”
The guard captain shouted loudly.
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of Senator Devitt’s lips.
From beneath his feet, countless vines burst forth, spreading at an astonishing speed.
Before the guards could react, the vines had already slithered to their feet.
What followed were cries of pain and the chaotic sound of gunfire.
The guards, in the end, were unable to delay Senator Devitt for long.
However, they had managed to transmit the incident in time.
At that moment, standing outside the door to Senator Devitt’s quarters, Nova received the exact report.
“What a sly old fox! He actually thinks he can escape right under my nose?! There’s no way I’m letting him get away with this!”
Nova rushed toward the secret elevator.
The secret elevator was reserved exclusively for the commander of Daskhollow Base. It moved over ten times faster than the regular elevators.
It also operated on an independent rail system,
which meant the base commander could reach any floor of Daskhollow Base in an instant using it.
In the blink of an eye, the elevator carried Nova to the topmost level of the base.
The moment the doors slid open, she drew her customized handgun and unleashed a storm of bullets into the corridor.
A large number of vines were shredded under the barrage.
However, the gaps left behind were quickly filled in by other vines.
“Your reflexes are impressive, I’ll give you that.
But you still won’t be able to stop me.”
Councilor Devitt’s smug voice echoed from not far away.
At the same time, Nova caught the mechanical groan of the Daskhollow Base’s main gate slowly opening.
“I will not let you escape!” she shouted,
“The agreement between the company and the Via Empire states that all citizens of the Empire must obey company directives while in our world!”
While firing relentlessly to clear the vines, Nova roared toward Devitt’s direction.
“Zenith Technology Company has no authority to impose obligations on the Empire!”
Devitt’s voice snapped back, cold and sharp.
“That agreement limits your company, not the Empire!”
“You shameless Eternal World scum!” Nova hissed.
“If the Via Empire dares to break its agreement with the company, it will be utterly annihilated in the Eternal World’s war.
You’ll never receive any technical support from the company again!”
At that point, Nova was less than a hundred meters away from the base gate.
She was hoping that her words might make Councilor Devitt hesitate, even for just a moment.
If he did, she might be able to catch up to him.
But her plan didn’t work.
Five minutes later, she finally reached the base’s exit.
Devitt was long gone.
All that remained was a small note he’d left behind at the doorway.
“Ants don’t get to make demands.”
Staring at the note, Nova’s beautiful face twisted in rage.
“You’ll pay for this—every bit of it!”
Although she was absolutely furious, she could no longer continue the chase.
Right now, for Nova, the most important thing was to report everything that had happened to company headquarters.
She had, in fact, failed. She hadn’t completed the task her superior had assigned her.
As the gates of the Daskhollow Base shut once again, not far off, Councilor Devitt finally let out a sigh of relief.
Though he had acted with great confidence during his escape, the truth was that he had barely avoided failure.
The guards at Daskhollow Base had posed a significant obstacle to him.
And, in their final moments, those guards had released a powerful, specially-made toxic gas into the passageway.
Councilor Devitt had inhaled far too much of the gas, and it was making it extremely difficult for him to breathe.
Had Nova not been entangled by the vines, he might not have made it out before her at all.
After barely half a minute of rest, Councilor Devitt decided to press on.
After all, the Daskhollow Canyon was now filled with a thick, purple gas.
That gas was infused with chaotic energy, which meant Devitt had to rely entirely on his own power to resist its harmful effects.
And he didn’t have much strength left.
“I have to get out of here as fast as possible! And once I do, I need to hunt down and eliminate some monsters, then absorb the chaotic energy they carry.”
Councilor Devitt carefully mapped out his next steps in his mind.
Then he moved, quickly and decisively.
At the same time Devitt was making his escape from the Daskhollow Base, Luca was at the archive center of Refuge 102, scanning through data about the surrounding region.
He had already sealed away the remnants of the Ancient Gods using the Prison of the Gods.
The next step was to gather enough power by eliminating monsters.
The monsters around Refuge 102 had already been wiped out.
Those in Oakville Town had also been dealt with, thanks to the help of the Life Keeper.
If he wanted to find more monsters, he would have to go somewhere farther away.
For instance, the snow-capped mountain he’d visited before, or near the Zenith Technology Company’s Daskhollow Base.
But both of those locations were far too dangerous for Luca.
That was why he needed to consult the database for alternative locations.
While he was poring over the files, Donlow suddenly barged in.
“What’s this? You’re actually helping me search through the data now? I thought you just said you had something way more important to deal with?”
Luca smiled as he looked at Donlow and asked,
“Here to help me with the archive search?”
He assumed she had come to assist him with the research.
But Donlow replied coldly,
“Nova wants to speak with you.”
With that, she tossed the communicator toward him and turned to leave without another word.
Luca stood there, a little awkward.
“Guess I was wrong about that,” he muttered. “But why would Nova be trying to contact me? Isn’t she still in the Imperial Capital? Or… did she already return to the Daskhollow Base?”
He had no clue.
After resolving the crisis in the Imperial Capital, it had been quite some time since he last saw Nova.
And before that, she hadn’t told him anything about what her next move would be.
