PAMPERED BY MY THREE BROTHERS: THE RETURN OF THE NEGLECTED HEIRESS
Chapter 1836: The Birth of a KingChapter 1836: The Birth of a King
Meanwhile, on the coast of the island…
Atlas already had a good idea of what life would be like with the Shadow Order. After all, his journey with Sybil had given him a broader horizon for what to expect. She told him more than what Zoren could offer regarding this.
Not Zoren’s fault.
Zoren simply claimed the Shadow Order, then dropped dead. So, it was no surprise that Zoren only knew the general knowledge of it. Thus, Sybil’s hindsight helped more than one could have imagined.
One of those insights was that Atlas may try to change the Shadow Order’s structure, but never its nature. And if Atlas wanted to secure his spot, not just in the Order but in the Secret Society, he must conquer one thing.
Death.
Not his, but death—blood on his hand.
Because in the Secret Society, if one was not capable or even willing to take another’s life, then it was their own life that would be taken.
Standing on the shore with him, the granny—Sybil—snapped her eyes up at him. “Are you truly certain of this, young man?”
Atlas didn’t say anything, his gaze somewhere distant. He drew a deep breath, finally meeting her eyes.
“Yes,” he said. “Though I do appreciate your questions and offers.”
“It’s not for you,” she clarified kindly. “It may sound like it, but it is not for you.”
Sybil paused, holding her hands behind her as she gazed ahead. “I asked you because your decision will affect thousands of people’s lives. You may be exceptional in your world, but the Secret Society is far too different.”
“Why do you think the Zorken and the Shadow Order separated?” she added. “Because if the Shadow Order operated within the Secret Society, they would all just come hand in hand, regardless of their dissatisfaction with one another.”
Sybil huffed faintly. “Having a common enemy is a problem that often unites those who are broken. Just like how Anteca united to take down Nathalie, it would be the same. The only difference is that those in the Secret Society can kill you even before you realize it.”
As the two spoke, they spotted someone drifting ashore.
“You’re right,” Atlas said flatly, taking a step toward the figure.
When he stopped, he watched a woman crawl on the shore. Parts of her arms were burned, and her hair was disheveled, revealing parts of her scalp. She looked like someone who had crawled straight out of the burning pits of hell.
However, Atlas stared at her emotionlessly. After a moment, Sybil stood near him, hands behind her, eyes on the woman.
“People like her… evil people like her don’t die so easily,” he continued, expressing his thoughts.
Sybil nodded as she chuckled. “Of course. We cling to life just as fiercely. Hence, even if you shoot us or even throw a grenade—or in this case, shoot them down with a missile launcher—we’ll find our way to survive… and regroup.”
“That’s how demons are,” she added. “That’s how it’s been, and always will be.”
“The good being called back to Paradise early for this world doesn’t bode well for them, while the bad…” Sybil paused, raising her brows as she shook her head mildly. “The bad live longer because Earth is closer to hell. We just stand above it.”
“Ugh…” The woman crawling on the shore could barely hear the conversation around her. She only stopped when her peeling hands touched Atlas’s shoes.
“Huh?” she croaked, her throat dry and burnt. When she looked up, half of her face was burned from the explosion that had happened.
Nathalie might have managed to jump out of the aircraft even before the missile launcher hit them. However, the explosion was so huge that the heatwave still reached her. And falling from that altitude without any protective gear, she was lucky she was alive.
Not for long, though.
“Nathalie Zorken,” Atlas called, staring at her emotionlessly.
There wasn’t even anger in his eyes, nor was there pity. He just stared at her with… nothing. As if everything she had done didn’t affect him at all. That he was too detached to even care.
But that was because Atlas understood her as a person. He may not know her personally, but her actions were enough to make one’s blood boil. But not for him.
“What made me angry is your action,” he said, raising a pistol at her. “Not you.”
He paused, his eyes never leaving hers. “Nathalie Zorken, it was a long battle you’ve fought bravely without a second hesitation. However, your time’s up.”
“The moment you failed to take control in the first two years should have been a tell that what’s not meant for you isn’t going to fall on your lap just because you wanted it,” he added very quietly, but sincerely.
An irony because every word that came out of his mouth was a direct stab to her heart, enough to kill her before any bullet in her forehead.
“It’s simply not for you, and even if you lived for another ten more decades, you’ll never win, Nathalie,” he continued in the same sincerely yet honestly brutal tone. “Because you’re a failure… and that’s what you’re meant to be.”
Nathalie’s half-burnt face stared at the man in a daze. Her mouth quivering, smoke coming out of there as if she was roasting from inside and out. Her vision was blurry, and she couldn’t make out the face looking at her too coldly.
“No,” she breathed out, shaking her head. “No, no.”
Despite being half-dead, she still tried to crawl away from him. But Atlas didn’t budge. Instead, he closed his eyes and drew a deep breath. After another breath, he reopened his eyes, and Nathalie barely moved away.
“No,” she whimpered, her fingers digging into the sand. “No, no, no.”
His mouth parted, rolling out an icy, “Goodbye.”
BANG!
Sybil, who stood a few paces behind Atlas, studied the man’s back. Her eyes then fell on the unmoving woman lying face down near his feet.
“The Zorken Family… failed to birth an heir,” she whispered, shifting her attention to the men around the coast, who had watched Atlas show them what he was capable of. And by the looks of it, this time, that bought their confidence in him.
A satisfied smile turned up on her face as she set her eyes back on Atlas.
“… but they did bring us someone who could lead us again.” She chuckled. “And we all just witnessed the birth of a king and the start of an era.”
