Chapter 821: Test Of Will
Elder Mikko looked at Kent and, with a neutral expression, gestured for him to ask his question. Of course, the question contained a series of questions.
“When you said our will determines whether we can become disciples or not, does that include us using treasures like enhancement pills, elixirs, techniques, and the like to climb?
Also, can one help their friends climb? For example, consider carrying them to the top.
Lastly, are there rewards for those who climb faster?”
Kent asked logical questions, and every disciple—though most are too prideful to ask—would most certainly want to know the answer. Elder Mikko looked at Kent more closely this time before answering.
“You can use any means to climb, but I recommend skills and techniques, for pills will burn out three times faster, and the higher you climb, the more quickly the effect wears off.
Treasures like artifacts and weapons will also lose 90% of their functionality the higher you climb. The only things that will aid you here are your techniques and skills.
Then, of course, the most important thing is your will to climb.
In the trial of will, your treasures can fail, you can run out of pills, but you can never run out of skills or techniques, for they are within you.
Of course, it will be slightly challenging to use them the higher you climb, but if you are determined to climb, you will.
For your second question, the answer is no. You can’t help anyone, since the moment you step onto the stairway, you will be in your own space, where the only way to come out is to climb to the top.
And for the last question, there is no other reward for becoming a disciple—that is reward enough. Any more questions?”
Kent shook his head. ’I guess they will handle it on their own. In the end, they have their own wills, and I have mine. We may share some form of destiny, but with weaker wills, even that thread linking us can break.’
“Good,” Elder Mikko said and then spoke one last time, “Use this chance to say your goodbyes because, as much as I would love to see you all become disciples of the prestigious Supreme Immortal Sect, most of you will be going home.
So say your goodbyes, because some of you might not meet again in this life.”
Her words hung heavy as friends turned to each other and started hugging and wishing each other luck.
’This is heartbreaking,’ Kent said inwardly. The next second, Nyss turned and looked at him with tears almost falling from her eyes.
“I have never been happy before until I met big brother Kent. And even though we only interacted for a few minutes, you made me the happiest lady in those few minutes.
So if this is the last time we meet, I would like to say that this little sister of yours will miss you. But don’t worry, I will train hard here so I can come take you with me on adventures. I won’t make you miss out on much.” She tugged on Kent’s arm, not letting go anytime soon.
“Please, Elder Mikko, I have another question. Can we push others off the stairway and disqualify them?”
Elder Mikko, who already had her eyes on the disciples from Sonox, smirked hearing Kent’s question. “No, you cannot do that.”
“Too bad. Some people clearly need a little push.”
“You are too cruel, big brother Kent,” Nyss said out loud, causing everyone to turn and look at the purple-haired human, whose life was turning miserable just because he didn’t have the heart to push Nyss away.
The inner disciples, who had heard Kent’s name for the first time since they came out with Elder Mikko, turned and looked at each other, clearly not believing their eyes.
The Kent that everyone couldn’t wait to see was the one with the weakest cultivation base among the thousands of disciples taking the exams.
That was just unreal, and judging by the look on Elder Mikko’s face, she, too, was taken aback. She expected Kent to have already refined his cores like most had.
However, the brat was merely sitting on the 3rd level, not even done forming his core. They couldn’t wrap their minds around it.
Kent, the one human everyone wants to meet, just doesn’t make sense.
Kent ignored all the stares and turned to his friends. “You’ve all come this far. Now, it’s just 100 steps away to claim a part of your destiny.
See it as your last remaining obstacle to claim what you truly desire, for believe it or not, it is just a stairway, and if you truly believe that, then climbing it will be a piece of cake.”
“We will not fail, Kent… We will climb and become disciples,” Princess Elowen said, and the rest nodded. Kent just smiled and turned back to face the stairway.
“Aren’t you going to say some inspiring words to me, Big Brother Kent?” Nyss asked, sounding like a spoiled child.
Kent clicked his tongue but eventually spoke, “’Make sure you don’t get too close to the edge of the stairway.’ You will never know why some winds are strong enough to give you a push over the edge.”
Nyss laughed.
“Big brother’s sense of humor is the funniest.”
Eventually, everyone managed to say their goodbyes and good lucks.
“Since we are all ready, you can start climbing now.”
The moment the order was given, everyone started moving. They all wanted to start early, as they had only 24 hours to complete the task.
“We are leaving, Kent. See you in the sect,” Princess Elowen said, and Kent nodded. He planned to stay behind and see how many of his friends and the others from Sonox would be able to get in.
Kent looked at the annoying young lady in his arms and sighed, “You should probably start early. I will join later.”
At least this time, she knew she had to. But even so, she waited an hour for the other two geniuses to make their move.
Though the three of them were from different planets, they were rivals, and while she would love to annoy Kent some more, she couldn’t let them join the sect faster than she would.
So she left Kent’s side an hour after the exams began.
“What a handful,” Kent said, looking at the annoying beauty who waved at him as she was about to step on the first step.
“Very annoying.” Kent just stood there watching as disciples of all races and lineages made their way up the stairs.
He looked at the three geniuses who had waited an hour before starting to climb and sighed.
“The only mistake you three made was allowing my pals to have a one-hour head start.” Kent knew they had waited one full hour so that they could show everyone their true prowess.
However, if there was one thing his friends knew about climbing, it was that the Flame Tower was their best teacher.
Now, looking at the 60th step, where Princess Elowen, Princess Freya, Madea, and the others had reached, he knew the three geniuses wouldn’t be the ones making the first appearance in the sect this time around.
The big three realized this when, just within three hours, Kent’s pals had already reached the 90th step, but they had only just reached the 70th.
“Arrogance is bliss.” Kent took out an apple and bit into it, savoring the taste as he sat and watched the drama unfold.
