Chapter 1114: The task of protecting Uchiha Sasuke

While Jiraiya analyzed the possible identities of Raijin, Samsara, and Tengu with Elder Hiruzen and Elder Koharu, Itachi, Shisui, and Shinichi had gathered nearby.

“Sasuke lost so miserably against Raijin. How should I put it… it’s really…” Shinichi struggled to articulate his feelings.

Although Sasuke losing to Raijin wasn’t unexpected, the way he lost was disheartening. Shinichi felt upset as he recalled that even Hatake Kakashi couldn’t defeat Uchiha Fugaku after Fugaku decided to use his Mangekyō Sharingan. Yet Raijin not only managed to defeat Sasuke but did so with seemingly little effort, which surprised everyone.

Hearing Shinichi’s words, Itachi appeared a bit helpless. The outcome was surprising, but when he remembered that Raijin was a member of Amatsukami, it started to make sense. Compared to Sasuke, who had just awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan and didn’t fully understand its power or how to use it, Raijin was likely a battle-hardened ninja seasoned by countless fights. For him, facing Sasuke might not have been much of a challenge.

Shisui waved his hand dismissively. “It doesn’t really matter how Sasuke performed; what’s important is that he awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. Moving forward, he can be guided to learn and make full use of his eyes.”

Shinichi smirked, recalling Sasuke’s pride. “But that kind of embarrassment… with Sasuke’s ego, will he be able to bear it? Not to mention, he failed to retrieve his father’s eyes.”

“On that note, Sasuke should be informed about everything to avoid escalating this matter any further. Naturally, he deserves an apology, and we will give him that… but…” Shisui turned to Itachi.

Itachi pondered for a moment before replying, “That can’t happen right now since he is unconscious. I’ll visit him when he regains consciousness and assess his mental state. If I believe he is ready to hear the information, I’ll tell him.”

“Alright, it’s up to you, Itachi,” Shisui nodded. “You can also consult Kuroto-san about this…”

Itachi nodded in agreement. “I will do that…”

While Itachi can reveal everything to Sasuke on his own, it also involves information about Konoha’s internal management, Uchiha’s Coup d’etat, and Amatsukami. Therefore, both Shisui and Itachi felt that it was necessary to consult Kuroto on this matter as well.

Shisui then recalled something and added, “Oh, and one more thing. Raijin went through all that trouble for Sasuke… it’s better to—”

Before he could finish, Itachi nodded with a smile. “I already plan on doing that.”

“That’s good…” nodded Shisui.

At that moment, Shinichi suddenly said, “Did either of you notice that Raijin’s fighting style is somewhat similar to the boss’s?”

Itachi nodded. “I had the same thought,” he replied, his expression thoughtful. “It’s also very similar to Tsukihi-senpai’s combat style. Raijin might have been trained by her, just as I was back then.”

Shisui considered Itachi’s conjecture and nodded. “Raijin does seem very familiar with how the Mangekyō Sharingan and Susano’o work, so that makes sense.”

Itachi sighed, expressing his concern. “However, even if he was trained by Tsukihi-senpai, his personality is quite different from hers. He is bold and attracts too much attention. Kakashi-san has expressed his doubts about Raijin several times. Once, he speculated that Raijin might have connections to the Akatsuki Organization and another time, he suggested a possible link to Orochimaru. I worry that sooner or later, Kakashi-san will come to me and say that Raijin might be connected to Amatsukami. On top of Kakashi-san’s suspicions, Kumogakure is also targeting him. If he gets captured, he could end up revealing sensitive information about the organization…”

Shisui shared the same concern. “We should talk to him and advise him to keep a lower profile going forward.”

But Shinichi shrugged, unconcerned. “What are you worried about? Isn’t Samsara and Tengu with him? I don’t know the full extent of Raijin’s abilities, but Samsara… you both know she has those eyes, right? With those eyes, is there anyone who can cause trouble for their squad?”

Recalling the pair of lavender eyes with a ripple pattern, Itachi and Shisui felt their worries were unfounded.

Seeing their speechless expressions, Shinichi added, “Besides, it’s possible that Raijin is acting this way on Boss’s orders.”

“Would Kuroto-san really instruct Raijin to behave like that?” Shisui wondered while Itachi nodded in agreement. They couldn’t imagine that Kuroto, who preferred to stay low-key and guarded the secrets of Amatsukami, would order Raijin to act recklessly.

“Who knows…?” Shinichi shrugged, sounding slightly uncertain. “We never really know what Boss is planning.”

Shisui and Itachi shared helpless expressions, agreeing with Shinichi. More often than not, Kuroto’s intentions were unpredictable. Unless he explicitly informed them, it was difficult to anticipate his plans. In fact, they didn’t even know exactly where Kuroto was at the moment—all they knew was that he was somewhere out there, leaving Itachi to cover for him in his absence.

“In any case, I’ll visit Raijin and make him aware of the suspicions his actions might have aroused,” Itachi said, turning to Shinichi. “As for Sasuke’s protection… I’ll leave that to you.”

During the second phase of the Chūnin Promotion Exam, Orochimaru had attempted to kidnap Sasuke amidst the chaos stirred up by Raijin. This attempt hadn’t gone unnoticed by the Uchiha Clan, who had been secretly watching over both Sasuke and Naruto. Given Orochimaru’s prior attempt, Itachi suspected he might try again, especially now with Sasuke in a comatose state and unable to defend himself. In this vulnerable state, Sasuke couldn’t be left unguarded.

Honestly, Itachi would have preferred to handle the job himself, but he was already juggling multiple responsibilities. Not only was he overseeing the final phase of the Chūnin Promotion Exam as the principal of the Konoha Ninja Academy, but he was also covering for Kuroto in his absence, effectively acting as Hokage. It wasn’t that Itachi couldn’t take on another task; however, the opponent in question was Orochimaru. With so much already on his shoulders, attempting to manage everything alone carried a risk—a mistake could cost Sasuke his life. Unwilling to take that chance, Itachi decided it was best to rely on others for this mission.

Apart from himself, Itachi knew he could trust Shisui and Shinichi to protect Sasuke. However, Shisui was also carrying a heavy load of responsibilities. As captain of the Konoha Military Police Force, he was tasked with overseeing Konoha’s security. With the final phase of the Joint Chūnin Promotion Exam underway, Konoha had attracted crowds from across the nations, including Daimyōs and other nobles. While the Anbu were responsible for the Daimyōs’ direct protection, the Military Police Force also had to remain vigilant.

Those with hostile intentions toward Konoha would likely view this gathering as an opportunity to act, and it was the Military Police Force’s duty to ensure public safety and handle any disturbances. In addition to these tasks, Shisui also had to monitor Fū, the Seven Tails’ Jinchūriki, as they couldn’t rule out the possibility of Akatsuki attempting something while everyone’s attention was diverted.

In this situation, the responsibility of protecting Sasuke fell to Shinichi. Given his past with the Akatsuki Organization and his experience in foiling the Snake Sannin before, Shinichi was more than capable of handling Orochimaru. Itachi, understanding this, readily entrusted Sasuke’s safety to him.

Shinichi didn’t disappoint and accepted the task with a confident nod. “Yeah, don’t worry. I’ll be keeping an eye on the kid. You can count on me.”

With Shinichi on guard, Itachi felt reassured. After nodding to them both, he disappeared in a burst of white smoke.

As soon as Itachi vanished, Shisui and Shinichi exchanged glances before their own bodies dissolved into clouds of white smoke, disappearing as well. It appeared all three of them were using Shadow Clone Jutsu to stay in communication despite their packed schedules.
