Ning had the idea to help people who were being followed by spirits back in the village where Grandma Usha lived. Because those villagers had no money to pay for an actual Spirit Detective, he had helped them for almost no pay.

The Spirit Detectives that did live in the cities were too expensive for them after all. Since he was the only one who got anything from helping others besides money, he had chosen to do so.

From there, he got the idea to help people in mass so that he could get some more points for his system. He had done the same in Jameen, and would’ve done the same had he had the time in Toma.

In Jameen, there were no Spirit Detectives due to the city being at the edge of the duchy, next to the mountain range. Hence, he never got into trouble.

However, if he had done the same in Toma, he would’ve definitely gotten in deep trouble, as he most likely had in Poras. That was because he was actively lowering the amount of potential customers each of the Spirit Detectives could get now that he had helped them.

It wasn’t so easy for a person to have a spirit attached to them. It wasn’t so often people died in the first place. Since he was reducing customers from the already small pool there was, the other Spirit Detectives had to be angry with him.

There was a reason they didn’t do what Ning did. It was because they needed to stagger out their customers so they didn’t run out of the ones that were actually willing to pay.

The customers were like a golden goose. They couldn’t expect to get all the eggs on the very same day.

And Ning had done the equivalent of cutting it all open to harvest what he could from inside of it, regardless of how little there actually would be. Only in his case, he was going to go to other places soon to find more golden geese.

“Okay, so I did make enemies,” Ning said. “I hope they don’t come after me.”

“So you were doing this all while unaware of the danger you were causing for yourself?” Matthew asked.

Ning gave an awkward smile. “The past few times I did it, it was in places with no Spirit Detectives, so I didn’t have to think much about anything. So, I didn’t think much this time either.”

“So, will you be leaving immediately tomorrow, or…”

“No, I still need to finish the job,” Ning said. “I got people I need to help.”

He helped with the preparation for tomorrow and left to go the rest of the night. He went to see how Mari and Shara were doing since they were sharing a separate room.

He talked with them for a while and afterward left to go to his room.

His room was large, with a few different beds, which he shared with Romus and 3 other soldiers. Since those soldiers were still back with Matthew making preparations, Ning went to sleep.

Ning woke up early the next morning around the same time the soldier did. They needed to leave the city today, so they would go to the shedding very soon.

“Romus,” Ning said. “If I happen to be late, leave a horse behind in my name and go without me. Once I’m done, I’ll catch up.”

“Got it,” Romus said without asking any more questions.

Ning left the tavern, leaving to visit 3 different customers he had promised he would help early tomorrow.

The first was a woman whose mother wanted her to meet with her father. It turned out that she was not the daughter of the man she thought she was, so after her death, she at least wanted the daughter to talk to her father, even if nothing came from it.

The second was a man whose father wanted him to buy back the family heirloom he had pawned off to a pawn shop in return for some much-needed money about a year back when he had fallen ill and knew he needed to get his son some money.

The pawnshop was to hold the pawned-off item for a year before it began selling it off, so Ning had to at least show the man to the pawnshop. He didn’t necessarily have to wait for the son to buy the item.

Finally, the third was an old man whose wife had died years ago. Before her death, the two couple had disowned their son for some reason, and the woman had always regretted doing that.

Now, she wanted her husband to reconnect with their child, and help them should they need it.

Ning arrived in front of the tavern where he had asked the people to come at one after another.

The first to come was the woman who wanted to meet her father.

“Let’s go. I have received the directions to his house,” he said and took the woman along with him.

The woman walked through the familiar road, the roads in the city where she had been born and raised. As they walked, she mentioned how she grew up around here before she had to leave for another side of the city due to some financial issues.

She remembered most of what was here, but things had still changed a bit for her.

Ning and she finally arrived in front of a large house and the woman gasped.

“No, it can’t be,” she said.

“Do you recognize this house?” Ning asked.

“It’s… it’s the house of my mother’s childhood friend,” she said slowly. “She always talked about him. It can’t be that he… he is my father.”

“I’m afraid that is the case,” Ning said. “Would you like to go inside and meet him? That is what your mother wants.”

The woman hesitated for a while before finally ringing the doorbell that hung outside of the door. A few seconds later, they heard the footsteps, and an old man walked out.
