Chapter 975: Court Trial
While Xu Feng was determined to hug the protagonist's thigh even further, the first aptitude test had commenced.
Each of the 18 players was sent to a realm of illusion constructed by Nicholas.
And as if Nicholas didn't want them to be bored, he even kindly showed 18 projection screens for them to spectate.
Toward this gesture, Xu Feng stood up and bowed once again. "Thank you, Elder Nicholas. This junior will definitely remember your grace."
"Haha, no worries." Nicholas laughed and shook his head. "I'll need to spectate them to ensure nothing goes amiss anyway. Since the two of you have your name recorded in the Honor of Glory's list, you definitely earned the right to spectate as well."
Although Nicholas worded it lightly and disregarded the action as something grand, Xu Feng knew this was him trying to rope them into his faction.
Factions exist everywhere as long as there are people around.
This was an ironclad law, and nobody could deny it!
Since Xu Feng was appreciative of Nicholas's behavior and temperament, it wouldn't harm him to be closer to the latter. Either way, making friends would only make the future paths easier to walk.
Even someone like CarnageBound's stature had attempted to fawn over Nicholas, but failed miserably in the end because of his intervention.
Sometime later, Nicholas returned his focus to the projection screens and began to orchestrate numerous types of incidents that test one's willpower.
"Who do you think will pass first, Guild Leader?" Carmen asked curiously.
"Hmm, hard to say in the early stages." Xu Feng pondered for a moment and responded. He didn't have much valuable information regarding the participating players to make a deduction.
This also served as a stern reminder to him to start building his own proper intelligence network.
'Wei Xing should have already begun building the network under my instruction. I just wonder if it's working well.' He had entrusted the intelligence network on OneManMedia a while ago, but no valuable results had yet borne fruit.
The cost of training spies and informants wasn't cheap at all. Moreover, they needed trustworthy and capable people to undertake such a role. Thankfully, with DataSeer now assisting OneManMedia, things should have taken a turn for the better.
With DataSeer being great with data analysis, he could easily search for a few competent players who weren't affiliated with any teams or guilds to recruit.
The cost might be huge, but it was a price Xu Feng was willing to pay.
So long as one could build a competent intelligence network, one could be considered to have won any battle 25-50% in advance.
As Xu Feng was wondering over this, Carmen remained unaware and gave her opinion.
"I think Evelyn is going to be the first to pass." She calmly said.
"Evelyn?" Dumbfounded, Xu Feng raised an eyebrow. "I thought you didn't have a good impression of her. Care to explain why the sudden high praise?"
Based on their previous exchange, Carmen was clearly disdainful of Evelyn's presence. Not to question her stalking-like behavior, just the mere fact that she was willing to sell out classified information for her own selfish gain was something baffling.
Even though she did it to befriend Cool Wind, which ultimately favored them well. It was hard to justify such an action without feeling disgusted.
If she could sell out her own guild's classified information for a chance to befriend another, then who was to say how low her bottom line was?
In fact, if it weren't for the contract that explicitly stated that neither party could reveal the transaction made, then Carmen would have believed Evelyn would expose the transaction information to her guild members in the blink of an eye.
This was also why Carmen held a firm belief that Evelyn would be the first to pass the willpower aptitude.
"Evelyn has no bottom line or morals. She's definitely going to pass the willpower with ease." She explained.
"Hah…" Xu Feng was rendered speechless by the explanation. Indeed, those with no morals or bottom line were definitely people with strong willpower.
"Guild Leader is also the same as Evelyn, so you have strong willpower as well. If we were to take the aptitude test along with the rest, then you would definitely be the first to pass."
"..."
He furrowed his brow and flashed an awkward smile, "Should I take that as a compliment or an insult?"
"Obviously, a compliment. The Guild Leader is beyond shameless, so how could my words be an insult?" Carmen giggled. "I will also do my best to achieve your state of mind. But for now, I'm still lacking and still need your guidance."
"You are really becoming more and more mischievous." Xu Feng sighed and shifted his attention to Evelyn's projection screen.
Within the projection screen, Evelyn was currently facing a court trial.
"Do you plead guilty, defendant Evelyn?" The judge asked solemnly.
Surprisingly, the judge in person mimicked Nicholas' appearance and tone.
Evelyn, on the other hand, was chained in her wrist and was forced to stand on trial.
To ensure players become more immersive, the scene incorporated the current participating players, so the audience in the back was all the trial contenders.
However, what was surprising was that the court trial only had two jurors, and they were none other than Xu Feng and Carmen.
'What kind of play is this?' Xu Feng narrowed his eyes and questioned silently.
While he was filled with confusion, the court trial in Evelyn's case continued to proceed.
The defendant Evelyn simply mused and asked, "Dare I ask, what crime am I being charged with?"
"You are charged with manslaughter and hunting of protected species," Nicholas responded, and listed each charge.
The manslaughter charges referred to the battle royale round where Evelyn killed numerous players she had encountered. As for the protected species, it referred to the Brown Fold Elephant, in which Evelyn had also killed a few of.
Though it was worth mentioning that Evelyn didn't actively seek to kill the Brown Fold Elephant. Instead, she only killed them when she happened to encounter them in her path.
"Oh, you mean the crimes that were basically manipulated by the operator?" Evelyn chuckled and shook her head. "I do not plead guilty."
