Chapter 84: You Want Me?
Why was her pet so utterly adorable?
Adorable enough to make her want to… do something about it.
As Yveste gazed at the black-haired, blue-eyed young man before her, a strange impulse surged within her. She wanted to strip him of every last piece of clothing, bite down on every inch of his skin, and leave her mark—her teeth marks—on his body.
It was an utterly twisted desire, incomprehensible to a normal person.
On one hand, she found him irresistibly cute. On the other, she felt a sick satisfaction imagining his pained expressions as she inflicted her possessive imprints upon him.
But it was just a fleeting, dark thought that flitted through her mind before rationality took hold again.
Taking a deep breath, she calmed her slightly accelerated heartbeat. As a leader who prided herself on fairness and discipline, she couldn’t allow herself to treat such a valuable subordinate inappropriately.
Still, after the brief wave of appreciation passed, her doubts crept back in.
Yveste’s mistrust, deeply ingrained from a lifetime devoid of genuine kindness, gnawed at her. To her, such acts of goodwill always seemed to hide traps. This was the second time recently that she had received goodwill from Lynn. The first was at the banquet. This time, it was against the Divine Order Church.
Deep down, she didn’t quite know how to process it.
Lynn’s actions seemed to remain within the boundaries of a subordinate’s role, yet they carried an undertone that pushed beyond those limits. It was enough to make her overthink.
But Yveste wasn’t about to let her internal uncertainty show. Feigning calm, she said, “Lift your head.”
Lynn reflexively raised his gaze.
Seeing his strikingly handsome face, the impulse surged again.
Damn it.
Yveste bit down hard on the tip of her tongue to clear her mind.
Then, feigning a cold laugh, she said, “You did all of this… for me?”
“How loyal. Such a good dog you are. As your master, I’m very pleased.”
Lynn exhaled quietly in relief as he noted the lack of red light from the ring.
It seemed this woman was merely playing up the drama. Clearly, she was deeply moved, likely at a loss for words, yet she still insisted on putting on this act of mockery.
Yveste, realizing her own slip, coughed lightly to mask her momentary loss of composure.
Then she spoke again. “But how curious—I seem to recall someone storming up to me not long ago, staging a melodramatic scene where they threatened to die unless I listened to them.”
“And now, only a few days later, you’ve had such a drastic change of heart?”
Crap.
Lynn’s brief relief evaporated, his nerves tightening again.
From Yveste’s perspective, his recent behavior was wildly out of character. It wasn’t just a question of whether or not he could do these things—it was a matter of overstepping his established boundaries.
Just a few days ago, he was calling her a lonely, miserable woman doomed to grow old alone. Now he’d transformed into a fiercely loyal lapdog, ready to tear into anyone who dared cross her.
The shift was too dramatic, too suspicious.
Caught in silence, Lynn was reminded of the first time Yveste had hypnotized him, when he’d blurted out an outrageous confession.
“I want to f*** you.”
The memory triggered a mischievous spark in Yveste.
She wanted to see how he would react if confronted with the same issue head-on.
Her tone was icy, she said, “I once read in a book that when a man is willing to stand up for a woman, it’s often because he desires her body.”
“You’ve done all this for me. So… is it because you want to sleep with me?”
Her crimson eyes flicked coldly toward the ring in Lynn’s hand, waiting for his response.
“No, I don’t,” Lynn replied with unshakable confidence.
Unfortunately, the next second, the ring betrayed him, flashing a vivid red light.
“...”
Lynn took a deep breath.
He didn’t want to sleep with her. But his lower half apparently had other ideas.
Damn it, he cursed internally. Of all times to betray me, it has to be now?
Naturally.
A fleeting, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corner of Yveste's lips.
Honestly, there probably weren’t many leaders who could feel exhilarated by the idea of their subordinates harboring sexual fantasies about them. Yet here she was, unique as always.
Still, she kept her composure, silently observing Lynn as if waiting to see how he would respond.
Meanwhile, Lynn could only feel an overwhelming awkwardness permeating the air. To be fair, the awkwardness was entirely one-sided—it was his.
Desperate to alleviate the tension, he tried a different angle.
“Your Highness is incredibly beautiful, and I’m just a perfectly normal man,” Lynn said, attempting to maintain a calm demeanor. “Honestly, I think it would be more disrespectful if I didn’t have some thoughts like that.”
The ring glowed red again.
Lynn froze, utterly dumbfounded.
Really? You’re doubling down on me now?!
A bead of sweat trickled down his forehead.
“Well, perhaps I’ve had thoughts, but I’d never dare act on them!”
The ring flashed again.
“Though, to be fair, I both think and dare. But to me, Your Highness will always be a noble and majestic ruler, not just a woman!”
The ring glimmered once more.
“Fine, fine! You’re so stunningly beautiful that it’s impossible not to see you as a woman. But believe me, I would never commit any disrespectful actions toward you!”
The ring blinked, unwavering.
“…Just kill me already.”
Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
“Enough. Shut up.”
Finally, Yveste couldn’t bear to listen any longer.
Though she felt a strong urge to laugh, she knew doing so in this setting would only lead to more misunderstandings.
Feigning coldness, she said, “I’m well aware of your boldness, but I didn’t expect it to extend this far.”
“Normally, someone like you would already be receiving punishment.”
“But given the merits you’ve earned this time, I’ll let it slide. I suggest you figure out what thoughts are appropriate to have in the future—and what aren’t.”
Feeling as if he’d been pardoned, Lynn immediately ceased his clumsy attempts to explain himself.
The topic was finally dropped.
With the personal matters set aside, it was time to move on to official business.
After regaining her composure, Yveste fixed her gaze on Lynn. “Your contributions this time are extraordinary, so I’ve decided to reward you properly.”
“As before, you may make a wish. Whatever it is, I’ll do my best to fulfill it.”
More empty promises?
Lynn sneered internally. He wasn’t falling for it this time.
But Yveste wasn’t done.
“Additionally,” she continued, “since you’ve regained your status as an Extraordinary, it seems you still lack a sealed artifact of your own.”
“Tomorrow afternoon, go to Milanie and have her retrieve ‘1-0106’ for you.”
1-0106?
Lynn’s dissatisfaction instantly evaporated.
The numbering system of sealed artifacts reflected their sequence rank, with a lower number indicating greater power and rarity.
If Yveste wasn’t bluffing, this meant he was about to receive an exceptionally valuable first-rank sealed artifact.
A level-one artifact—the pinnacle of power, second only to the mythical level-zero. This was far beyond the caliber of trinkets like the Trickster’s Coin or the Deadly Marionette!
Lynn’s mood made an immediate 180-degree turn.
If this artifact can help shore up my combat weaknesses, that’d be perfect, Lynn thought, a surge of excitement rising within him.
Honestly, considering its value, a level-one sealed artifact could easily rival the insane earnings he’d made over the past few days—if he found the right buyer, of course.
For once, this woman is being truly generous.
“Thank you, Your Highness!” Lynn said earnestly.
Seeing how delighted he seemed, Yveste’s mood brightened as well.
I really have been acting a little strange lately, she mused quietly.
At the same time, a familiar system notification chimed in Lynn’s ear:
[The storyline deviation for S-tier character "Evester Roland Alexini" has increased to 2.07%.]
The system was evidently tallying up the changes Lynn had caused to the plot over the past two days.
Looks like I’ll have to collect a reward from the Witch when I get back, Lynn thought with satisfaction.
Just then, Yveste spoke again.
“Also, if there’s anything left unresolved in Orne City, make sure to handle it in the next few days.”
“In a few days, we’ll be returning to the Imperial Capital.”
So soon?
Lynn’s heart skipped a beat.
Then again, it made sense. Yveste’s mission in Orne City was complete—she’d successfully secured the support of an Elector Count.
What Lynn hadn’t anticipated, however, was how quickly he’d be heading back to that place.
