Chapter 229: In Trouble

Otis’s tone turned harsh. “Then why are you in City?”

“Master, I… I ran into the injured Sera Kleinberg in the park! I was trying to save someone! Yes, Sera was also deceived by that villain Alex!” Eric Vaughn launched into another tirade about Alex’s supposed crimes.

“Silence!” Otis slammed his hand on the bed frame, his face turning livid. “This City is very far from Dawson Family City! There’s a whole province in between! I told you to go to the Dawson family and fulfill the agreement with Dawson Family, but instead, you ran off to the City causing trouble! Let me ask you, with the cities being so far apart, are you an idiot?!”

Eric Vaughn was completely stunned.

What’s going on? What’s wrong with Master? Why is he suddenly swearing? What did I do? Didn’t I just get lost the first time down the mountain? Is it really that big a deal?

“Master, it’s not my fault I got lost, right? I don’t have a phone, and I can’t read a map. Getting lost is pretty normal!” Thinking about this, Eric Vaughn felt deeply wronged.

Technology down the mountain developed too fast; he couldn’t keep up.

When someone first called him a ‘country bumpkin’, Eric Vaughn actually thought it was a compliment. He was happy about it for a while, even saying ‘thank you’ several times!

When he finally learned the truth, tears streamed down his face.

“Then how do you explain killing someone while treating them?” This was the one thing Otis could not tolerate.

When had an heir of Valley ever killed a patient? Eric Vaughn had set a terrible precedent for the valley.

Otis worried the ancestors of Valley wouldn’t be able to rest in their coffins and would pop out just to drag Eric Vaughn down with them.

He’s brought shame upon Valley!

An heir of the to his techniques and killing someone while trying to save them! And the key point is, the patient he killed wasn’t even dying from some incurable disease! It was just a simple stroke!

He himself could cure that blindfolded!

“Master, you know my medical skills! Although they’re not as good as yours, they aren’t bad either! I really wanted to save him that time, but things didn’t go as planned! But I was framed by a villain! I’m innocent!” Eric Vaughn even dropped to his knees.

To this day, he couldn’t figure out why he had been so unlucky that day. The needle technique was so familiar, yet that time, he just couldn’t hit the right points.

It was strange, very strange.

Hmm… It must have been that bastard Alex pulling tricks!

“Shut up! You can’t even cure a simple stroke, and you still have the nerve to say your skills aren’t bad? You’ve completely shamed Valley!”

Otis’s face was etched with disappointment. “Killing someone is bad enough, but you also managed to get yourself into this state! Valley has no place for such a useless disciple like you!”

What does that mean?

Eric Vaughn panicked completely. “Master, what do you mean by that?”

“Exactly what it sounds like. Don’t call me Master anymore. I don’t have a useless, good-for-nothing disciple like you.” Otis’s tone was firm. He didn’t even look at Eric Vaughn kneeling on the floor.

This time, Eric Vaughn froze completely, utterly stunned.

He forgot to apologize, forgot his confusion, forgot everything.

It took a long while for him to recover.

His mind was filled only with confusion and bewilderment.

‘Why? Master, why? What did I do that was so terrible it angered both gods and men? Why are you kicking me out? Didn’t I just… fail to save someone, and accidentally killed them instead?’

‘What’s the big deal about that? It wasn’t that bad! Besides, even if I hadn’t done anything, that old guy wouldn’t have lived much longer anyway. He was going to die whether I saved him or not. So, technically, I didn’t kill him…’ Eric Vaughn kept telling himself this. Kneeling on the floor, he looked up at his First Master.

Why? No, this has to be a misunderstanding. First Master must have misunderstood something.

‘Yeah, definitely a misunderstanding. First Master must have been tricked by some lowlife, just like Sera and Riley were fooled. It has to be that bastard Alex! Only that bastard would keep coming after me! Damn you, Alex! You just wait!’

Eric Vaughn suddenly looked up, tears streaming down his face. “Master! Don’t listen to that lowlife’s lies! I’m your dearest student! I grew up with you, you know exactly who I am! You can’t believe some outsider over me!”

‘Is there any justice? Any law? Any fairness left in this world?’

“It’s because I watched you grow up, because I know your character best, that I’m so familiar with your nature.”

Saying this, Otis sighed. “It’s all my fault. I was too naive. I thought sending you down the mountain would help you mature, refine your character. I never imagined you’d cause such a terrible disaster, even resulting in someone’s death.”

“Sadly, it’s too late for regrets. Letting you leave the mountain was like setting a tiger loose.”

Otis stared into Eric Vaughn’s eyes, saying each word clearly, “Eric Vaughn, our time as master and disciple is over. Starting today, I am no longer your master, and you are no longer my disciple.”

“Master, what crazy things are you saying?” Eric Vaughn was totally stunned.

Weren’t you here to stand up for me? How did it turn into cutting ties?

The turnaround was too fast. Eric Vaughn couldn’t accept it.

Otis closed his swollen eyes. “I’ve thought about this very carefully. If I don’t cut ties with you now, the reputation AcupunctureValley built over generations will be completely destroyed by you.”

“Master, did someone beat you stupid or something?” Eric Vaughn still couldn’t believe it. How could his First Master suddenly want to cut ties with him?

It was just unbelievable.

“You brat!” Otis gritted his teeth against the pain around his eyes. “I told you, I fell down the stairs accidentally! And I am not your master anymore! Stop calling me Master carelessly!”

This time, Eric Vaughn really panicked. He could tell his First Master wasn’t joking. He really meant to kick him out of AcupunctureValley, to actually cut ties with him!

“No!” Eric Vaughn screamed towards the ceiling, the world suddenly feeling cold and bleak.

“Master! Impossible! You can’t do this to me!”

Eric Vaughn’s eyes were red, his lips trembling. “Master! You’re the one who found me in a trash can down the mountain and took me in! You said I was like your own child! I’m supposed to look after you when you’re old! And Master, and Third Master… we’re a family! You can’t just listen to what other people say!”

He was sobbing uncontrollably, snot and tears everywhere. “Master! I’m your kid! You taught me about herbs, taught me medicine, you even taught me the secret Acupuncture technique of AcupunctureValley! You’ve been more of a parent to me than anyone! How can you just… just throw me away?”

Eric Vaughn cried and talked, snot dripping messily.

This pitiful, weak, and helpless look directly made Mike, who was watching the drama unfold from his hospital bed, feel… aroused.

‘Yes. This was exactly his type. Hit the spot perfectly. And, judging by the situation, Eric Vaughn was about to have absolutely no one left.’

It hadn’t been long, but he’d gathered quite a bit of information.

From their conversation, Mike had pieced things together.

Eric Vaughn was an orphan, no parents. He was raised by this old man. The old man seemed to be a doctor and taught Eric some medical stuff.

Probably just for show, though. The medical skills were likely just basic stuff, maybe enough to handle a cold or fever.

And now, this old man was abandoning Eric Vaughn too.

Hehe! Little Eric is about to hit rock bottom. This is the perfect moment to strike while he’s weak.

Mike got excited.

Eric Vaughn kept playing the sympathy card. Having lived together for so many years, he knew his First Master was the most sentimental.

Faced with Eric Vaughn’s constant pleading, the expression on Otis’s face kept changing. He looked like he was just about to break free from the mental hypnosis control.

Over on the bed, Mike suddenly spoke up: “Eric Vaughn, begging him is pointless. You might as well beg me. Your ‘little brother’ is already useless anyway. What’s the point of begging him? Are you really expecting him to fix it?”

Damn it, shut your mouth!

Mike’s words completely stunned Eric Vaughn.

He did have that plan! Even if First Master was determined to cut ties, he still needed his ‘little brother’ fixed!

How could he live without it?!

First Master might be gone, but he still had Master and Third Master. Eric Vaughn wasn’t that panicked yet.

Besides, Eric Vaughn firmly believed that First Master was only acting this tough and wanting to cut ties because that bastard Alex must have said something to him, somehow tricked him. That’s why First Master wanted to disown him.

But it didn’t matter. He could contact his first Master and Third Master. As long as they dealt with Alex, the root of the problem, First Master would surely come back.
