Chapter 731: The Busy Proceedings of the Courtroom
Damian woke up in his private room on the seventh floor of the Sanctum. Lucian had woken him up with a very rude kiss. Toph was sleeping beside him with his four legs stretched out like a kid.
After chatting up with people in the stone keep last night, Damian had returned to his runic lab and made some necessary runic devices that he needed—like a light orb lamp that could be turned on with a switch. A separate bathroom, which he placed in the runic lab room—it had a shower, bathtub, and even a toilet. All made with added runic spells to have warm water and no issue of pipes and all—the waste could be turned to ash with chaos spells.
No one in history might have thought a chaos spell could be used to make better toilets—but that’s who he was in this world, a different perspective.
Damian took a shower, dressed in good clothes, and was ready in 10 minutes. Lucian, seated on his fancy chair in the office, had already called to bring breakfast up here. An attendant even delivered it before he came out of the bathroom. They ate together in silence while looking at the city of Sanctuary slowly waking up, washed with morning light.
“Will I be teaching classes?” Lucian asked suddenly.
It took barely a second for Damian to connect that she was talking about the academy.
“It’s up to you. You can hire others for different subjects and could teach swordsmanship and practical fighting-like classes,” he replied while eating bread.
Food was another thing he wanted to improve for quite some time now. Today, the work would resume for the Sanctum officials. The soldiers still had today off. Not that they were needed right away—Damian had to finish installing waygate points to all the dungeons first so he could get all the info about the dungeons present in Sanctuary. There were some 32 of them in total. He also needed to select some officials for managing the dungeon entry and resource allocation process on the island of Malveria.
Setting up all the necessary dungeon points today would solve the issue of sending all the village and other town people back—right now, wagons and such were limited and there were issues of bandits and monsters on the way. Damian also had plans for making the land safe, but all had to be done slowly—not overloading people.
First of all, however, he needed to hire some people. Make some money by securing some deals with merchants or other kingdoms. His potions were already making them enough to go on day after day without borrowing anything, but Damian needed more funds to do big projects. A deal with the emperor could fix all money issues at once, but he wouldn’t fold so easily—unless the guy had something good hidden somewhere, Damian wouldn’t let the tiny dragon get the better of him.
Along with Lucian, Damian used the lift to come down and entered the auditorium-like room that was reserved for the meeting. The system Einar and Evrin had created for Sanctuary—the three leaders were at the top, which were Einar, Souldealer, and Evrin. Then came all the noble lords that had status above barons and some well-known second-ranker knights too—all of these made a courtroom. These lords brought in issues that were concerning the people of Sanctuary and discussed possible solutions. Then the three leaders took the decision.
The thing was, over 60% of these lords were from Dawnstar, and Prince Leon was the one they followed in every decision, so it was more of a discussion between Einar, Evrin, and Souldealer with Prince Leon. But that was from before.
Since Damian and others had arrived back, now there were Sam, Lucian—third rankers without any title—and Einar had resigned as Keeper. Only after talking with people for some days had Damian realized that the nobles and knights had very different opinions from him, but they did not voice it because they had no idea what kind of person he really was.
After the war—that belief had reached a borderline fear of him. Which, to be honest, was legit and Damian didn’t really care about it, but that is not how a functioning government worked. He needed to change the system from the ground up—especially the part in which the common people had no say in the matter of the city at all.
They had to rely on nobles to voice their concerns, which alienated the biggest group of people, who were the most important element of any city and country. Most of these nobles had no idea what common people thought about the things they were doing on a daily basis. There was no connection between the rule-makers and rule-followers at all.
Not today though.
“Lord Keeper, is it true that you made a deal with the demons? Giving them access to underwater dungeons in return for all the loot?” one of the lords asked. The guy was of Ashenvale origin it seemed; he had a grey and black handkerchief—the colors of Ashenvale.
“Yes,” Damian replied.
In the auditorium, he was the only one seated on the small stage. The third rankers and Evrin took up the first row of the seating arrangement, and behind them were all the nobles.
“May we know how many of these dungeons you have found, my Lord?” another lord asked.
Damian looked at the two female attendants waiting to the side. The older one answered, looking in the document she held,
“257.”
Half were too shocked to even remember to blink; the other half started constantly murmuring until finally Souldealer spoke up and the other voices stopped.
“Lord Keeper, shouldn’t our own people have first right to level up in these dungeons? Surely we could have used demons, but at least we should take a look at what these dungeons offer first.”
“Taking a look in 257 dungeons? That will need the army of all three kingdoms..” Sam added from the side before Damian could answer.
