“You got me discovered by the empress, how am I supposed to face anyone after this!”
The woman sat on the bed crying; the man, bare-chested, had a cold and ruthless back.
Su Yingxue saw as he picked up the clothes from the ground, his demeanor one of someone who, once dressed, would acknowledge no one. The woman, her heart breaking, clung to him crying loudly. Amidst their argument, they fell back into the covers, the woman sobbing with resentment.
Su Yingxue furrowed her brows, didn’t look any further, and quietly led Madam Yin away.
Madam Yin anxiously asked, “Did Her Majesty see anything? Were they really… doing that sort of thing?”
Su Yingxue nodded, “Though I suspected their daytime declaration of love was a pretense, possibly to conceal Miaoyan, but that woman’s reaction seemed very real.”
If at this time, they could still comfortably continue that sort of thing on the bed, then it must have been an act, meant to embarrass me into leaving.
But this woman’s reaction didn’t seem feigned.
Su Yingxue pursed her lips, “Auntie, you go back to Marquis’s Manor first to await news. After I return to the palace and ask the emperor, I’ll inform you.”
Madam Yin, filled with reluctance and concerns, could only listen to Su Yingxue.
After all, having already searched the Qilin Garden with Su Yingxue, any further delay would indeed make them seem unreasonable.
On the way back to the Marquis’s Manor, she bit her lip, weeping bitterly.
“I was against your marriage to Xiao Yu from the start,” Madam Yin covered her face, sobbing, “My foolish daughter, your heart is so pure, how could you endure by Xiao Yu’s side for long?”
They were only a lesser branch of the Marquis’s Manor, having split from the main family long ago, and her husband held a low military post. She didn’t wish for Su Miaoyan to marry particularly well or to bring glory to the family, only for her to live a safe and happy life.
But unexpectedly, the man she fancied was Xiao Yu, heir to a great merchant family.
Before Su Miaoyan’s wedding, Madam Yin had opposed the marriage, while others said she was short-sighted, not understanding that marrying into the Xiao family was to enjoy a lifetime of wealth and honor, but she knew the perils inside a large household.
However, Su Miaoyan loved Xiao Yu.
She still remembered when Su Miaoyan received the imperial edict for marriage, how her eyes sparkled with excitement.
She held her arms, laughing for hours, “Mother! I’m going to marry Brother Yu! Brother Yu likes me the most! He said he will cherish me all his life!”
She pinched Su Miaoyan’s cheeks, her face clouded with worry, “Haven’t I told you not to fully trust the words of men?”
“But he is Brother Yu! It’s different!”
“But the Xiao family is a merchant family, with complex relationships and deep waters in the inner courts, can you really thrive there?”
“Of course, I can! With Brother Yu, he said he’ll protect me!”
“Can he protect you for a lifetime?”
“He can, he can! Brother Yu is handsome and capable, the best man there is! Mother~ I really do love Brother Yu!”
Her daughter’s soft voice still echoed in Madam Yin’s ears, causing her to cry uncontrollably.
Meanwhile, Su Miaoyan, obediently hiding under the bed in the Qilin Garden, lay still until suddenly, the noises above the bed grew louder!
“People have left, let go.”
Chasing Shadows looked at Mu Qianya with cold eyes filled with a murderous aura.
Mu Qianya, her face flushed, bit her lip, “You let go first, turn around!”
“These are my clothes.” Chasing Shadows saw what they were both gripping.
Mu Qianya hugged the outer garment of Zui Ying tightly against her chest, covering the enchanting scenery, her face turned even redder, “You, a man, why are you so petty? It’s just a piece of clothing… Go find another one!”
In Zui Ying’s left hand was the garment, and in his right hand was a knife. He flicked the sheath open with his right thumb revealing a cold gleam that flashed through Mu Qianya’s eyes. She released her grip in fear.
Zui Ying reclaimed his clothes, only to see that Mu Qianya… was not wearing anything on her upper body. Her undergarment had fallen onto the bed during their struggle earlier.
Mu Qianya, hugging herself, screamed, “What else do you want to see? Get out!”
She had only grabbed his garment to use it as a cover!
Little did she know, he was so inconsiderate!
Zui Ying spared only a glance before withdrawing his gaze, his eyes remaining calm and unrippled.
He was even more ruthless than Mu Qianya had imagined. After putting on his clothes, he coldly ordered while staring at the bed, “Let her out.”
Su Miaoyan had been hiding inside for too long; an incident would be hard to explain to his master.
“You… you…” Mu Qianya was so infuriated she almost spat blood!
She had compromised her reputation and been seen unclothed by him, and now, before she even dressed, he was asking her to release Su Miaoyan?
Was he not even considering that she was a unmarried woman?
“Get out!” Mu Qianya couldn’t hold back any longer and shouted.
“Release her,” Zui Ying said coldly.
“Release her? You want me to let Miaoyan out while I’m still not dressed? Do you want another look at me?!” Mu Qianya cried. This time, her tears differed from before when she had been pretending for Su Yingxue; she even had to pinch her own thigh to force the tears out.
This time, she felt aggrieved and heartbroken, like she wanted to kill Zui Ying!
Zui Ying spared her one glance, then turned away, “Make it quick.”
He was actually hurrying her?
Mu Qianya, out of anger, threw a pillow at him. “Get out!!”
How could she feel at ease to dress with him still here?
“I won’t look,” replied Zui Ying, his voice chillingly devoid of any warmth, like ice at the bottom of a cold pond, hard and instilling an involuntary fear.
Mu Qianya stood her ground against him, but with Zui Ying’s knife drawn halfway, a chilling light flashed, causing her to shiver all over.
With bitterness, she bit her lip and began to dress slowly.
Though she was not yet married, as a businesswoman she had encountered more men than most sheltered women, of all various types.
Even the most noble young masters invariably coveted a woman’s body.
But Zui Ying was unlike any of them. She dressed tremblingly, always on guard, occasionally glancing at Zui Ying, afraid he would turn back to look.
Yet, even after she had dressed fully, Zui Ying kept his back towards her, motionless as if he were a statue.
Mu Qianya’s anxious heart finally began to ease slightly.
She shakily got off the bed and put on her shoes, then went to open the trapdoor, but due to her intense trembling, she misstepped and fell forward.
Zui Ying, turned away from her, extended his hand precisely to catch her wrist, pulling her upright on the floor. Mu Qianya locked eyes with him at that moment, her heart leaping to her throat.
She saw his eyes, unchanged in the slightest.
