This Beast-Tamer is a Little Strange

Chapter 670 - 670: Flaws in the Fusion

Bea tried to hold on. But this wasn’t a battle of mental manipulation, it had entered the realm of the spirit. The link she’d initially overridden was now being reconstructed through a stronger connection to Soren’s soul.

The wind dragon buckled, convulsed—then screamed.

The link snapped.

Kain clutched his chest as a faint pang of pain ran through his heart.

Bea’s presence within his mind, which was usually like a constant presence in his subconscious, dimmed briefly. Kain could practically visualize how she recoiled, shrinking slightly, despite her being invisible to the naked eye.

The fourth dragon lurched forward, its wounded wings dragging, eyes vacant—before it was absorbed into the rising fusion.

The aura of the monstrosity strengthened even further, rising and rising until it broke through the limits of what felt like a peak blue-grade spiritual creature, to indigo grade.

And it continued to rise. Kain began to fear that this ‘disgusting’ skill was really going to push this monstrosity to violet grade!

But…

The fused creature shuddered. Its aura flared—but then twitched.

Much to Kain’s relief, like a balloon popping the swelling aura began to recede like a tide until it eventually settled at a level between the peak of blue-grade and an average indigo-grade creature

Kain’s eyes narrowed.

Imperfect.

Whatever spiritual bond had existed between them, perhaps the skill even required some kind of sigil or soul brand in each of them, was damaged when Bea took over. And though this skill had yanked the dragon back and out of Bea’s control, the link was tainted.

Not enough to stop the fusion.

But enough to weaken it.

The crowd gasped again as the fused beast let out a warbled roar—four voices layered over one another like the artificial layering of singers on a song.

The monster that emerged from the smoke was colossal, nearly filling the arena’s central field. Its body was thick and muscular like the Western Dragons that make it up, but with a torso so thick it looked disproportionate almost.

It was armored in overlapping scales that shifted in hue between metallic gold, deep oceanic blue, and an vibrant amethyst, with streaks of pale green like veins of jade running beneath its hide.

Atop its back, its wings were malformed—one leathery and translucent like the wind dragon’s, the other thick and ridged with armoured bone and looked at though it could cut straight through an average green grade spiritual creature.

The tail forked, split between a clubbed end and a razor-edged whip of wet fin.

Its four heads had partially merged at the neck and now shared one massive reptilian body reminiscent of the hydra in legends.

And through its entire intimidating body ran hair-thin black cracks, barely visible at first glance—like old porcelain carefully glued back together to look almost seamless, but still far more fragile that it was originally.

The kind of imperfection that was an indication of things repelling one another yet being held together by force alone.

The fused creature reared its multiple heads, releasing a roar that shook the entire arena.

Chunks of stone fell from the stands. Protective barriers shimmered. Several spectators in the upper stands reflexively covered their ears despite the muffling enchantments around the arena that dulled the sound reaching the audience.

Kain however, didn’t benefit from the sigils. After a brief popping sensation, all he could hear was a ringing in his right ear as his eardrum became evidently damaged.

But he still held steady.

He didn’t have the luxury of awe.

Because the cracks might have weakened it—but it was still one of the strongest opponents he had ever faced. Had it been in the wild, he may have chosen to flee or avoid fighting. But he didn’t have that luxury now.

“Aegis. Vauleth. Bea. Formation Two.”

They responded instantly. Aegis surged forward, the runes on his tough exterior alight with shifting patterns. Vauleth shot into the air, wings fanning hot bursts of wind. And Pale Thought Field, which had been retracted, began to cover the field again.

Queen, for her part, briefly healed Kain’s damaged ear before taking to the skies for herself.

The beast’s attention shifted instantly, fixating on Aegis. It launched forward with surprising speed for something so large. Its tail slammed the ground, and the entire arena buckled, creating a crater around its impact point. Aegis barely rolled aside in time, raising his arm to block a follow-up swipe from one of its clawed limbs.

The impact sent Aegis skidding backward—but he held.

Then came the lightning.

A bolt of violet lightning erupted from its horns—unlike anything Kain had seen. It didn’t follow the path of natural electricity. It curved mid-air like a living whip, slamming into the defensive barrier of metallic stone that Aegis barely had time to raise.

The impact fractured the shield. Not shattered—but bent.

Had Aegis not received the boost from Kain, or thought to inject some Abyssal energy into the barrier, it never would have withstood the blow and Aegis’ body would have had to deal with most of the attack.

Vauleth responded from above, launching a barrage of molten orbs that exploded along the creature’s flank. Steam hissed and armor cracked—but the beast barely flinched.

The green head’s mouth opened, the one for presumably the wind-attribute dragon, revealing a vortex of wind that howled outward like a cannon. The compressed gust slammed into Vauleth, sending him spiralling off course. He managed to stabilize, wings slightly bent at the edges, but the attack had clearly rattled him and he was no longer as stable in the skies as he was before.

Meanwhile, Bea attempted to launch another pulse of mental pressure, aiming at the same weakened connection she had previously exploited. Her field sparked and pulsed—but this time, it was like slamming into iron.

Clearly, this monstrosity being a collection of all of their minds made their mental defenses far stronger than when they were separate.

Kain gritted his teeth. If he couldn’t figure out a way to take this thing down and exploit its weaknesses, he will lose.
