James laughed softly, shaking his head. “You’re overthinking it, Marcus. Mila’s just being Mila—quiet when she needs to be, bold when she wants to be. She’s fine. And as for Allen, he’s a professional. If something’s going on, it’s not our concern as long as the deal holds.”
Marcus sighed, clearly unwilling to push the issue further. “I hope you’re right. I just want everything to go smoothly from here on out.”
James grinned, his confidence unwavering. “Trust me, it will. We’ve got everything lined up perfectly. Allen’s got what he needs, we’ve got our end secure, and the event’s going to be a success. You’ll see.” He clapped Marcus on the shoulder again, his smile broad and reassuring. “Exactly.
Now stop worrying and go get some rest. You’ve earned it.”
With a reluctant smile, Marcus finally relented. “Yeah, you’re right. I’ll head out.” He glanced one last time at Mila, who was still lost in her thoughts. “Take care of Mila, will you? She seems… off.”
James waved him off with a chuckle. “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure she’s all right. Go on.”
Marcus gave him a final nod and turned to leave. James watched him go, his smile fading slightly as he turned his attention back to Mila. She was still standing there, her gaze distant, lost in her thoughts. Something was clearly off. Marcus had been right to point it out—Mila wasn’t acting like her usual self. And James had a pretty good idea why.
‘It must have something to do with her conversation with Allen,’ he thought. It all pointed to one thing, her feelings for Allen.
The problem was… Allen had always been guarded, careful with his emotions, especially in situations like this. And now that he was closer to the Goldborne family, it only made him more cautious. James wasn’t naive—he knew that getting close to Allen could benefit the company owned by Mila’s family. If Mila and Allen were together, it would create a link between the two companies.
But first, James had to understand what was going on between them. He had to get Mila to open up.
He took a step closer to her, placing a hand gently on her shoulder. The contact was enough to jolt her out of her thoughts, her head snapping up as she blinked, suddenly aware of his presence.
“Hey,” James said softly, his voice laced with concern. “Are you okay? You look… lost.”
Mila looked at him, her expression still distant, though her eyes softened slightly. She gave him a small smile. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just… a lot on my mind, I guess.”
James nodded, not buying her casual dismissal. “What did you guys talk about?”
Mila hesitated, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. She didn’t want to divulge too much, especially not with James, who she knew was always thinking several steps ahead. But she needed to talk to someone.
James leaned in slightly, his tone coaxing but still careful. “Mila, you know you can trust me, right? I just want to help. If something’s bothering you, I’m here.”
Mila sighed. She looked at James, his eyes sincere, and for a moment, she considered telling him everything. But then she remembered the walls Allen had put up, the careful distance he maintained, and the way he had guarded himself against everyone, including her. Was it right to share what they had talked about?
“We didn’t talk about anything important,” she lied, her voice too soft, even to her own ears. “It was just… awkward. You know how Allen is.”
James frowned, clearly not satisfied with her answer. “Come on, Mila. It wasn’t just awkward. You’ve been quiet ever since you came out of that room. I’ve known you long enough. Did Allen say something to hurt you?”
Mila bit her lip. She remembered Allen’s cold formality, the way he kept the distance. It wasn’t that he had hurt her intentionally, but his guardedness had stung more than she wanted to admit. He hadn’t let her in—not really. And it was that distance, that emotional wall, that hurt her.
“No, it’s not like that,” she said quietly, her voice trembling slightly. “It’s just… complicated. I don’t think Allen feels the same way I do, and I… I’m not sure what to do about it.”
James nodded, his expression softening. He had expected as much—Allen was never one to wear his heart on his sleeve.
“Look, Mila,” James said, his voice gentle but firm. “You’ve been through a lot, and I get that this situation with Allen is tough. But you’ve got to ask yourself, is this something worth chasing? Because Allen… he’s not easy. He’s always going to be guarded, especially now that he’s so tied to the Goldborne family.
You have to be sure that this is what you want.” He wanted to push them together, for business purposes of course, but somehow… a part of him didn’t have a heart to do it just like that. At least, she needed to understand that she really wanted him. Simply, he wanted a win-win solution for them.
Mila looked down, her mind swirling with doubt. She had tried to convince herself that Allen was worth fighting for. But now, after everything, she wasn’t sure if Allen would ever let her in.
“I don’t know, James,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I thought I could reach him, but… he’s so distant. It’s like there’s a part of him I’ll never be able to touch.”
James squeezed her shoulder gently, offering a reassuring smile. “Maybe you just need to give it more time. Allen’s not an easy guy, but if anyone can get through to him, it’s you. Just… be patient, Mila. And if it doesn’t work out, you’ll know you gave it your best shot.”
Mila nodded, though her heart still felt heavy. She wasn’t sure if patience would be enough, but she appreciated James’ support. Once again, she was lost in her own thoughts. She wondered if Allen would ever let down his walls—or if she was chasing something that would never be.
Note: Some of you may be confused whether Allen will take Mila as his harem member or not. As usual, I will use a poll to determine this. The poll will be given after their (Mila and Azura) Character Development arc is finished. The first one will be Azura.
