Walker Of The Worlds

Chapter 2661: Giving An Opportunity

Meng Bai paused and thought for a bit before speaking to Lin Mu.

"A few months ago, I saw some of the soldiers training out in their district. They were having a spar in a smoke-filled area, and the runes for it were written on the ground," Meng Bai stated.

'Hmm… that does make sense. Training within smoke is a common method. The Qi-obscuring smoke would distort their Spirit and Immortal senses, forcing them to rely on their other physical senses to fight,' Lin Mu thought to himself.

It was a good method of training and gaining proficiency in combat.

"Have you made any more talismans?" Lin Mu inquired, wishing to see more of his work.

"I have," Meng Bai nodded his head.

He opened his pouch and took out five talismans.

Two of them were simple Fireball Talismans that even Qi Refining Realm cultivators could make with little to no training. Another two were Buckler Talismans that created small defensive shields in front of them, which were also low-tier shield-type defensive talismans.

The final lone talisman was another surprising one called the Spirit Qi Locking Talisman. It was a high-ranked talisman used for restraining individuals.

Just like its name, it could slow down or lock down one's Qi entirely if they couldn't resist it. Of course, the effect was rather short, usually lasting no more than a few seconds to a whole minute. But that was often more than enough to get a few attacks in.

Lin Mu inspected each of the five talismans in detail, observing how they were made, the strokes of the runes, as well as the materials used.

The talismans were made from the most basic kind of paper and weren't even intended for talismans. The ink was crude, having been made from simple soot. Neither of these materials was conducive to making talismans. While it was still possible, it was not something an amateur would normally be able to accomplish.

It required a high degree of control over one's Qi so that it could be infused properly. But at the same time, it needed to be done quickly enough to embed itself into the talisman paper before the ink dried.

The runes themselves certainly needed work, as the penmanship was sloppy. This was the case for all the talismans, whether they were simple or high-grade, like the Spirit Qi Locking Talisman.

Having observed them, Lin Mu got a few more ideas about Meng Bai. But before he could delve further into those, he needed to ask a few more things.

"Why didn't you use the Qi Locking Talisman on me?" Lin Mu asked. "It is the better choice for restraining, isn't it?"

"Well, once I saw how easily you were able to keep up with me, I was sure that you might be an Immortal Cultivator. As such, I knew the Qi Locking Talisman wouldn't affect you. It only works on Spirit Realm cultivators," Meng Bai explained.

Lin Mu was silent for a few seconds before replying. "Good choice." He couldn't help but praise again.

'To make such a decision in such a short time while assessing all factors isn't easy. He has some level of battle sense to do this,' Lin Mu thought to himself. 'If not that, at least his reasoning ability and instinct are sharp.'

So far, Lin Mu found Meng Bai to be promising. He had a certain level of talent, which had been limited due to his circumstances.

Seeing this, Lin Mu felt a new urge.

The urge to unearth that talent and improve it.

It was the same feeling a sculptor got upon seeing a raw piece of rock and wishing to carve out a marvelous sculpture from it.

Lin Mu thought for a minute more before coming to a decision.

"Do you have an interest in formations?" Lin Mu asked.

"I… don't particularly," Meng Bai replied. "The only reason I made the talismans was because they were the most accessible thing to make for me. I tried to make some good ones, but the materials for them are expensive. I spent a month's earnings on the Qi Obscuring Smoke Talisman," he explained. ᚱàℕÔβÊs̈

It was a solid answer, and one that Lin Mu couldn't deny.

Making formations indeed took the least amount of resources, as all one technically needed was their own Qi.

One could make a formation simply by scratching down some runes on a stone. Of course, whether it would work was another matter, but with practice, it could be done, just like how Meng Bai had made talismans with simple paper and ink.

"Then do you wish to learn about formations?" Lin Mu asked, making Meng Bai widen his eyes in shock.

"W-what?" Meng Bai felt like his ears were playing tricks on him.

"Do you want to learn about formations?" Lin Mu repeated. "I can teach you properly."

"W-why?" Meng Bai questioned. "Why would you teach me?" He couldn't understand.

"Just because I can," Lin Mu simply said.

Those were words that Meng Bai found to be both ridiculous and impactful.

'Just because he can… Just because he can… Who else can say that? To me, of all people…' Meng Bai pondered deeply.

His heart screamed at him that he had to answer, for this was the opportunity he had been waiting for all this time.

Deep down, he knew that if he didn't take it now, something like this might never come his way.

"YES!" Meng Bai shouted, suddenly standing up.

He was loud enough that the entire room was now watching him, with the two owners looking at him with concern.

"Ah!" Realizing his mistake, he sheepishly apologized before sitting back down.

"Good." Lin Mu smiled.

Meng Bai didn't know what to say after that, but the eagerness to learn was certainly visible on his face.

"What do we do now?" Meng Bai asked after a bit.

"Now? Now we begin your training," Lin Mu answered. "Let's go." He stood up, leaving no doubt.

"Wait!" Meng Bai suddenly said.

"Feeling hesitant?" Lin Mu asked.

"No… it's not that… we didn't even eat our food," Meng Bai replied.

"Oh…" Lin Mu had totally forgotten about that in his excitement.
