With My System, I Can Even Tame Gods
Chapter 1117 - 1117: Glory City’s city guardsThose that joined the royal guards were naturally put on a probation period where they learned how to do their jobs.
Even if he was the top scorer in the exam, Lin Fan was not an exception to this rule.
he was organized to join one of the ten regiments of the royal guards.
But the fact that he was sent under a regiment showed how much care he was given.
Though the royal guards were nothing more than guards that protected a puppet ruler, they were still properly organized. At the same time, the ones that were in position of the royal guards were those that had been put there by the six factions.
So any commander of a regiment was someone that was trusted by the six factions.
The position that Lin Fan actually received was assistant to the regiment commander.
It was clear that this was an easy position that had been prepared just for him.
At the same time, it was prepared so the regiment commander could see what he was capable of.
The faction that won this right was the southern duke’s faction.
The southern duke was the first thing that was mentioned when Lin Fan met the regiment commander. Once that was mentioned, it was very clear which faction that the regiment commander was a part of.
In the end, Lin Fan just promised that he would keep the southern duke in mind when the time came.
That was all that the regiment commander had been told to do and Lin Fan knew that as well.
The real hard part would be at the end of this mission of his where he would have to face the six factions. What it was right now was nothing more than the calm before the storm.
After talking to the regiment commander, Lin Fan was assigned to go watch over the city guards.
The royal guards were the ones that were in charge of the safety of the emperor and the royal family. However, there were only so many royal guards and their normal activity would be limited to the castle and the surrounding area where the royals were.
That meant that they didn’t have enough people for the entirety of Glory City with how big of a place it was.
It wasn’t as if the royal guards alone would be able to watch over the entirety of Glory City.
That was why there were the city guards.
The city guards weren’t as strong as the royal guards, but they more than made up for their lack in power with their numbers. There were enough of them to watch over all of Glory City and to be human shields if need be.
As the royal guards were stronger and had a higher status, it was only natural that they were in charge of the city guards.
But at the same time, this was because it helped them coordinate with their jobs.
The city guards kept the riff raff at bay so the royal guards could focus on the stronger people that they needed to deal with.
Since they worked with each other, it was only natural that there would be a representative from the royal guard to watch over them.
This task was usually handed off to junior members of the royal guards.
Since they were of a higher status, it was only natural that the royal guards looked down on the city guards. There were many in the royal guards that felt that they were too good to deal with the city guards.
That was why this was a task that was handed to one of the junior royal guards.
Of course, it wasn’t as if this was a hard matter since the city guards had people that knew what they were doing. This check in was just a customary matter to make sure that they knew that the royal guards were still in charge.
The city guards actually hated this since it made them feel as if they were inferior.
Which technically was the purpose of this trip in the first place, but it wasn’t as if anyone said it out loud. It would only make things worse if something like this was said out loud.
That was why when Lin Fan came in and told them to relax, the city guards were completely caught off guard.
In fact, they didn’t expect Lin Fan to act the way that he did at all.
“We really thought that you were going to be one of those uptight royal guards.” One of the captains of the city guards said this, but he was quickly silenced by his companions who all looked at Lin Fan with fearful looks.
Lin Fan just shook his head and said with a smile, “They really are uptight, but that’s just how it is when it comes to nobles.”
The city guards were once again caught off guard when they heard this, but they didn’t completely let their guards down. They didn’t seem to trust Lin Fan when he said this, but this couldn’t be blamed on them.
Unlike for Lin Fan, this was a matter of life and death.
The ones that were a part of the city guards weren’t nobles.
Those that were in the royal guards were treated as nobles even if they weren’t actually nobles.
If a city guard was to disrespect a royal guard, the only fate that was waiting for them was death. At the same time, it wouldn’t just be their death, it would mean the death of their family members as well.
This was not something that they could play with that easily.
Only the walls didn’t stay up since Lin Fan quickly made them lower their guards with just a few simple words.
“The royal guards really are stuffy. There’s these commanders who only care about appearances and don’t really train at all. At the same time, the other royal guards don’t talk about anything interesting at all.”
The more that Lin Fan said, the more the expressions of the city guards changed.
After all, some of the things that he said really were things that would have gotten him in trouble with the royal guards if they heard this.
The fact that he was saying all of this meant that he was trusting them with this information.
Though in reality, if they were to actually say anything, it wasn’t as if anyone would believe them. If they were to actually report this, then all that would happen is that they would be punished for slander.
But the fact that Lin Fan was willing to go this far did touch them.
It meant that he really was different from the other royal guards.
At the very least, it seemed that he was much easier to talk to than the other royal guards.
The other reason that they trusted him was the tone that he took with them.
Unlike the other royal guards that had arrogant tones that had traces of disdain in them, Lin Fan talked to them in a friendly voice that even had a trace of respect in it. That just went to show that he wasn’t actually looking down on them like worms, he was talking to them as humans.
When one showed respect, they would naturally receive respect as well.
“You want to know more about Glory City?”
“It’s your first time in Glory City?”
“I’ve lived here all my life. Just let me know if there’s anything that you want to know about the city.”
It didn’t take long for these people to start bragging about what they knew about Glory City.
After all, there was a reason why they had become city guards in the first place.
It wasn’t just about the money and status that came with it, though that was part of it. But if they really wanted money and status, there were other things that they could have done instead of being city guards.
What drove them to be city guards was their love for Glory City, the place that they had grown up in.
“Then I’ll be counting on all of you.” Lin Fan said with a smile on his face before letting them brag as they wanted.
It didn’t matter how much they had to say, Lin Fan just sat there with a smile on his face listening to everything that they said. Even the things that were nothing more than simple idle gossip, he listened to it all.
In fact, Lin Fan was even carefully memorizing everything that they said.
Though it didn’t seem like these things would be useful to him, Lin Fan made sure to memorize them since there was someone else that would find it useful.
Once he was done, Lin Fan then suggested, “How about we go on patrol now? I want to see some of these things for myself.”
The city guards were naturally happy to walk around with him.
Being able to walk around with a royal guard was something to brag about, even if they did look down on them. At least with Lin Fan, they would be able to show that they were close to the royal guards which would be something to brag about.
But what Lin Fan really wanted was their information on Glory City.
Since he had a plan for this place, it didn’t hurt to have as much information as possible.
The city guards could be considered the ones that were the most familiar with this city, so of course he would befriend them.
