Chapter 1215 Promotions
Rodney only needed that line to show how much he had understood Khan's situation. Despite their enmity, Rodney knew Khan's character quite well, and the information he had gathered in the recent period had been enough to complete that puzzle.
Things were exactly as Rodney had described them to be. Khan needed help getting a proper job on Merth 290 to avoid remaining stuck in that lawless zone and keep moving. Three species were looking for him, and staying still was bound to make them catch up.
Also, Rodney's awareness of Khan's situation confirmed what the latter had already guessed. As much as the three species had tried to contain the news, some parties had already learned about it, and they were bound to leak it even further.
Khan needed to disappear, and he had to do it quickly. Rodney had also vaguely boasted to know how to help him. He only needed something in exchange.
"What's your current rank?" Khan asked.
"Lieutenant Colonel," Rodney declared. "I told you I would have outranked you. Though that's quite easy when you can't stop betraying your species to chase after alien girlfriends."
"[Scum]," Liiza called, not caring whether Rodney understood her words were for him. "Be sure to understand this before you speak more nonsense. I'm no one's girlfriend. I'm Khan's wife."
Revealing that information to someone as shady as Rodney wasn't wise, but Khan couldn't help but understand Liiza. They had lived most of their past relationship hidden in mountains or caves, with Liiza unable to call Khan hers publicly.
That was a big deal for the Niqols, and Liiza wouldn't refrain from indulging in those customs now that she had abandoned everything to be with Khan. She could accept that the couple had to remain hidden, but those misunderstandings about the nature of their relationship had to go.
"Oh, this is hilarious," Rodney exploded into a laugh. "You actually went and did it, alien-lover. Waging war against your own species wasn't enough. You had to marry an alien and force her to follow in your footsteps."
"Your insults carry no weight," Liiza declared. "You still are a pitiful boy with no stomach for crises. My husband was a hundred times the man you are ten years ago."
Rodney could easily reply in tone. The man had a venomous silver tongue that could match Khan's. Still, he fell silent, making Khan wonder whether the negotiations were over.
"For what it's worth," Rodney eventually said, his voice lacking its previous mocking tones. "I apologize for my shameful behavior on Nitis. I'd ask you to bring my apologies to Asyat, but I believe your situation doesn't allow that."
As much as Rodney couldn't refrain from throwing a mocking line, his words surprised Khan. Sure, the two had sort of reached an agreement and understanding after Milia 222's crisis, but that statement still exceeded Khan's expectations.
"What?" Rodney asked in the following silence. "You aren't the only one who has changed in these years. To find strength, I had to accept my hopelessness. I must own my mistakes to become a man who will never commit them again."
Khan genuinely was at a loss for words. He still didn't like Rodney. The man's attachment to humankind bordered on xenophobia. Yet, he could respect his values. If anything, they were similar to Brigadier General Meadrey's beliefs, and they had made Khan cut ties with the Global Army.
"Besides," Rodney continued, sighing. "As much as you still fail to appreciate your species, you are helping it. Maybe you aren't as ungrateful to humankind as I initially thought."
The tournaments, the supplement, and the alien medical trials were undeniable services Khan had done and was still doing to humankind. Despite Khan's unorthodox behavior, Rodney had to acknowledge those priceless aspects.
"What rank do you want to achieve?" Khan asked.
"General," Rodney promptly replied.
"That's at least two promotions," Khan commented.
"You are the emotional type," Rodney stated. "You'll do anything for that alien wife of yours."
Rodney was right, but Khan had to ask more questions. "What happens once you become a General?"
"What I promised I'd do," Rodney responded. "I'll make you regret turning your back on humankind."
"If you make us clash," Khan warned, "Humankind will disappear."
"Does that mean you won't do it?" Rodney wondered. "Or maybe you can't. That's quite disappointing for a Prince, even a traitorous one like you."
Something told Khan that Rodney wouldn't give him any agency over his political actions after the eventual promotions. Still, as much as the two disagreed on many fundamental values, Khan would help humankind since he needed its support against the scarlet eyes. Rodney probably wouldn't oppose him as long as he did that.
"Contact Colonel Mark Norrett on Baoway," Khan announced. "We needed someone more suitable on the inside anyway."
"I won't be your spy or secret helper for your alien ploys," Rodney warned. "Don't believe for a second that this makes me a part of your force."
"Do you want the promotions or not?" Khan asked.
"The years didn't make you any less arrogant," Rodney scoffed. "How do I convince Colonel Norrett that we have a deal?"
"That's for you to figure out," Khan declared. "Just like I'll have to trust the information you are selling."
"Did you actually quote me?" Rodney gasped. "Are we becoming friends? Will you find an alien wife for me, too, now?"
"Alien beauties on par with my wife are wasted on you," Khan stated, earning himself a pleased but still unconvinced look from the woman at his side.
"I don't swing that way," Rodney reassured. "I'm more interested in Miss Solodrey now that she is free. As your newly established best friend, I must say you really fumbled such a great catch."
"Rodney," Khan called, a faint purple-red glow shining on his red tattoos, seemingly attempting to wipe them off. "These negotiations can end there."
"Easy, soldier," Rodney chuckled. "I'll gather the relevant information about Merth 290 now. In the meantime, should I know something else from your end?"
Khan pondered the matter, trying to make reasonable thoughts win, eventually finding something worth mentioning. "Francis Alstair. After talking with the Colonel, coordinate with him."
"The boy who was obsessed with Miss Solodrey," Rodney sighed. "You truly want your brother-in-arms to chase after his crush."
"Joke all you want," Khan smirked. "Miss Solodrey is outside your reach. But, if I ever learn you did something to her, there won't be a planet I won't burn to flush you out."
