Chapter 1006: 1006 Gate Crashing
The next morning, Wolfe got the group moving bright and early, intending to head to Gormana while it was still early morning there.
“Are we flying?” Cassie asked as she got dressed and ready for the morning.
“We will go there with a Portal, and after that, we will be flying between locations with guests. The Finance Minister and his assistants are coming with us.” Wolfe explained.
“They aren’t going to switch out for a more suitable team once we get there? I think that they were expecting to have the time in flight to contact people to change positions with them so that there were experts on the power grid available for us to question.” Ella reminded him.
“That’s a good point. We should ask them where exactly they need to go first, so we can get all the relevant experts in one spot. One of the Guardians is going to open a portal for us, as she is here all the way through the festival, and knows the spell.” Wolfe agreed.
The Guardian in question was much more prepared than they were, and she was not only finished breakfast by the time that they arrived, she had already gathered the Gormana delegation, who were just sitting down to eat.
“Good morning, Saint Noxus. Thank you for taking our concerns so seriously as to go immediately to our aid. The Guardian has sent through a message to our power grid engineers, and the minister of infrastructure to meet us in the Capital, which will be the largest of the power projects.
Once we meet with them, I can arrange a car to take us to the power plant. I will just need to know your timeline for the upgrades, and then I will be able to arrange accommodations.” The Finance Minister explained.
A few of the Candidates smiled as they ate. That was exactly what they heard Mary say would happen once he arrived.
Wolfe smiled at the Minister. “I think that you misunderstand how long it takes to do a renovation with magic. According to my sources, you have one reactor currently active, and the others have been decommissioned and purged of their fuel sources, correct?”
The Minister nodded. “The fuel has been removed from the reactor, and relocated to a nearby cooling pond, where purified water is used to slowly bring it back down to ambient temperature for long-term disposal.
The tanks are quite impressively sized, as we have been using the reactor for centuries, but it should not interfere with whatever work you need to do.”
Wolfe nodded. “In that case, we should be able to finish the upgrade of the reactor in only a few hours, using the existing structure, if it is suitable for use at its age.”
The Minister nodded. “It was reconditioned for another century of continuous use just before it was decommissioned for lack of fuel. At the time, it was thought that we might be able to reverse the null stone creation process and regain the fuel stores. If we could have succeeded, then we would have had fuel to last well beyond that century mark.”
Wolfe chuckled. “The amount of Null Stone that I destroyed during the invasion by the Grand Dutchies would have powered your reactor for longer than that. But that’s no concern now, as I will use the existing chamber to set the spell so that you don’t need to do anything but flip the breakers, and you will have full power from the reactors again, without the need for physical fuel, as they will be burning mana.
The amount of mana drawn for the power grid might cause a bit of instability in the surrounding mana flows, so I do hope that it is not in a populated area.”
The Finance Minister waved his fork in denial. “Certainly not. It is a hundred kilometres from the Capital, the closest distance that we felt was safe, should it be targeted by enemies and damaged.
The lessons of the war are well remembered by our infrastructure planners, and when the reshaping of the world happened, many nuclear reactors were breached, and proved to be much too close to the cities they served.
Radiation poisoning is a nasty thing. Especially when the Witches were in full rebellion at the time, blaming the humans for the catastrophe.”
Cassie and Ella nodded in agreement. That was part of the history books that all parties agreed on. The witches certainly did blame the humans for the catastrophe, and claimed it was their warlike approach to the Magi that prevented that power from being used for the will of the One World Government and its people.
On the other Continents, they were more unified, as the government had never split up. It was only recently that they had learned the same would have been true here, had they not been ordered quarantined and sterilized in the hope of stopping the spread of the bloodline curse.
There was so much that hadn’t been recorded in the history books that, at this point, it was anyone’s guess what the actual truth of the situation during the early days after the world as they had known it was destroyed.
Once they were finished eating, the Guardian opened them a portal, allowing Wolfe to lead the group through into what he realized was the Parliament building. They were in the middle of a session, with hundreds of people in the seats, and cameras all over the room, recording everything for the news, or for their records.
“Greetings, everyone. I am Wolfe Noxus, Patriarch of the Noxus Family, and representative of Forest Grove and the Frozen Wastes. I have brought back your Finance Minister with good news for you.
Minister, if you would please, speak your piece.” Wolfe declared as everyone sat in stunned silence.
“What, oh, yes. Of course. I come bearing good news. Speaker, may I address the assembly?” The Finance Minister stammered, while the human leaders of Gormana glared at him for showing up in the middle of the room instead of informing them in private first so they could spin it and claim credit.
The Demons, on the other hand, thought that it was hilarious, and they were watching with great amusement as Wolfe’s bodyguards ushered the Minister’s assistants in before the portal closed.
