Chapter 1007: 1007 Just Lay It On Them

The Finance Minister seemed to wilt under the glare of the leader before the man schooled his expression back to polite interest in what deal had been made.

He knew, of course, what the details were. But showing up like this in the middle of a parliament session was not how he wanted it to be revealed to the public. The laws of Gormana allowed anyone in the room to ask detailed questions, and it was illegal to lie to them here.

If he had crafted a release to remove any unsavoury bits about the deal, he could just keep referring them to the document, and avoid actually giving answers. But the Finance Minister was a numbers’ person, great with finance, but not a real politician beyond the scope of his job.

The Finance Minister started his speech. “Um, yes, where was I? Right, we have come to a monumental agreement with Saint Noxus of Forest Grove to revamp our entire power grid. To begin, I will provide a summation of the details, while hard copies are being created to provide all the members.

Using the existing power plant facilities and transmission lines, Saint Noxus has agreed to use his magic to bring the facilities back online at an output level equal to or exceeding the previous maximum output.

All seventeen of the nation’s power plants will be back online at the end of this process, with clauses to have more capacity added as needed.

In exchange for the maintenance and creation of the necessary power plant spells, Saint Noxus will take ten percent of the retail power price, with Gormana holding the power to set pricing.

The scheme also mandates a fund be set for upkeep and maintenance, as our nation will be liable for the maintenance of the power grid, other than the actual magical arrays providing the power.”

The Minister paused for a second and the shouted questions started, exactly as the leader had feared.

The Demons held most of the power now, but they didn’t really understand the nature of an industrial nation, so while they had been negotiating everything else on behalf of Gormana, things like this had been overlooked during their transition to a proper magical society.

The Demons simply didn’t see the benefit, or appreciate the urgency, when they lived for thousands of years.

So, it was no surprise when the group of Guardians present made a motion for Wolfe to join them after this was finished, so they could properly understand what he was up to. Wolfe had helped them get food and oil in already, and they were short on everything. But he hadn’t tried to step on their territory before, and had only done it now because the human leadership asked him to.

“What is going to happen when the price drops back down to an affordable rate? Won’t that share become a financial burden for us?” One of the representatives was shouting.

Wolfe raised his hand for silence. “This deal was created with the share for my upkeep responsibilities as a fixed percentage precisely because we expect you to bring the cost of power back under control, to the point that everyone can afford it. The deal sets the maintenance fund for the grid at last year’s spending plus five percent, so it should be self-sustaining from power fees without additional funding, but my share will naturally vary with the price of power.

That is acceptable to me, as providing power to so many millions of people is already a profitable endeavour for me. The complex arrays for the power plants are fifty times more efficient than directly using lightning magic, as I am certain that someone has suggested in the past.

That is why the power plants are being used, as I can custom tailor spells to have them continue providing power for a minimal mana imbalance in the area. Gormana’s power supply will be back to its industrial peak, and you will be able to bring all of your shuttered factories back into production as soon as you have sourced the raw materials.

That is a separate matter, though I do know a number of willing suppliers.”

The Demons chuckled as Wolfe finished speaking. They also knew a number of people, as he put it. Sure, some of the people they knew were Fae, who were better with Earth Magic, but there were Earth Elemental Demons as well, and telling them that the alternative was to ask the Fae to create the materials was likely to get them to provide a bulk discount.

“How long? My district is in the mountains, and the rolling blackouts are already hitting as we come into winter.” One of the politicians shouted from the back rows.

The Finance Minister smiled as he realized this was a question he knew the answer to. “The first power plants will begin coming online later tonight, and we are hoping to have the majority of them working within the next two weeks.”

Wolfe had explained that it should only take a day or two, but if you said two weeks, then everything under that would be viewed as a success.

Among the chatter, there were many relieved voices, politicians who were eager to tell their people that they would be able to turn on the heater this winter.

“When will the work start?” The speaker of the house asked, silencing the room.

Wolfe nodded politely at the elderly politician. “As soon as we are finished answering questions here, I will be taking a group to the nearest Nuclear facility to bring the reactors back online with magic as the fuel.”

That was something that they could all understand, as when the reactors were online, it powered the entire capital city and surrounding area.

“Then we won’t keep you longer. I believe that the Guardians do wish to have a word with you in advance, as they were only recently updated with the details.” The Speaker announced.

“Finance Minister, kindly remain behind. We have more questions.”

The pure despair in the man’s eyes nearly made Wolfe laugh. The Minister had been hoping to escape with Wolfe and his Witches, but his luck had failed him at the last moment.
